Royals and American media coverage

ButteryPuffin · 04/04/2020 23:50

Saw this cover posted on Twitter and noted that it seems the tabloids do indeed exist in the US (amazing, huh?). This is pretty much what you'd expect from the source, and I think it's pretty deplorable, but I am interested to see how the American media in general cover the presence of the former royals who've now arrived to make their home there. Of course we can discuss their coverage of other Royals too and related topics. All welcome.

Link to cover story - please note I'm not endorsing it, I'm just sharing it:

She most definitely is sticking her tongue out.

lizzie1970a · 11/04/2020 09:55

Ok, she might be, but it's not clear who to. It could be a child in the crowd. How do people know it was Camilla?

7Worfs · 11/04/2020 09:59

If it’s on purpose it’s pretty bad.
I really don’t like grown ass women acting infantile or cutesy.

RosesandIris · 11/04/2020 10:00

I think it was to someone in the crowd on the walk to or from church. Not Camilla.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 11/04/2020 10:10

I’d say a badly timed shot as well. We’ve all been caught off guard at times.

lizzie1970a · 11/04/2020 10:20

Pretty sure it was to someone in the crowd. Most likely a child.

Here is the Sun’s take if anyone is interested in that bastion of journalistic integrity

In the effort to be fair let’s remember that other royals have done it before including Harry on a regular basis, Kate, Andrew and William.

7Worfs · 11/04/2020 10:30

Ugh. None of them should be doing it.

EthelMayFergus · 11/04/2020 10:44

Archepenguin Sorry that was me that mentioned the tongue sticking out, but not as one of a list of faults. I used it as one of two examples (the other was giggling in church) of MM treating marrying a member of royalty as a bit of a lark. The occasion I was referring to is the garden party for Charles' 70th birthday (she's wearing summer clothes), not the one of MM in a coat which does indeed look like it's aimed at the crowd.

Well , this is called self-subjugation. We’ve had a good few years now where we are supposed to accept women’s pronouncements that they are not objectifying themselves when they do this but are, in fact, flying the banner for feminism and empowerment. In actual fact, they are acting like this because they are being highly rewarded for accepting and perpetuating sexism (big money in this for them without too much hard work). Meghan’s (not just Meghan) burger grilling and naughty maid roles while stating “I am really a feminist” have always made me irrationally irritable but this is an age-old argument with seemingly little resolution

EthelMayFergus · 11/04/2020 10:46

Gosh, that picture in The Sun of Diana in the blue hat - William is her double!

7Worfs · 11/04/2020 10:50

Barley interesting! I haven’t given it much thought, but it does feel like a thing done specifically to appease or attract (male) attention.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 11/04/2020 11:03

Barley you have expressed my feelings on this perfectly. I dislike coy and simpering behaviour at the best of times but as a deliberate ploy it really is reprehensible. It perpetuates a stereotype that other women are judged against. It is the very antithesis of female empowerment and the hypocrisy of it is one of my main beefs with MM.

MissEliza · 11/04/2020 12:36

Can I add I hate women who act less intelligent and helpless? I know MM isn't that type at all but I'm adding to the general discussion. My MIL is like that. It pisses me off.

lizzie1970a · 11/04/2020 12:51

I totally agree with you too Barley

LaMarschallin · 11/04/2020 13:35

The "contration" look involving sticking the tongue out always reminds me of Terry Pratchett saying small children do it to give more space in their heads to think.

It is quite infantilising and doesn't send a great message when women shouldn't have to be seen as youthful or childish to be appealing.

The other one with the tip of the tongue caught between the teeth is a definite attempt to look sexy.
I can't even explain why it should be so, but I know I did it myself in my late teens and early 20s to be flirtatious Blush.

Tbf, a couple of the pictures do look like she was interacting with a child/children, but it might have been wiser not to have done so in a very formal setting.

Now we await 10,000 pictures of Kate giving the royal tongue an airing, to point out the difference in treatment she gets from the press...

7Worfs · 11/04/2020 14:06

LaM yes to all of your post Smile

I think many women (me included) in their late teens/early twenties lack the confidence and awareness that comes with age, so I wouldn’t be harsh to a youngling still trying to figure it out.
I would however expect better from someone in their 30s.

SenecaFallsRedux · 11/04/2020 14:26

I think it highly unlikely that she was sticking out her tongue. She was probably trying to moisten her lips and the camera caught her just at that moment.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 11/04/2020 14:34

Seneca with all due respect if she needs to stick her tongue out that far to moisten her lips she needs some advice. Take a look at the pictures (google is your friend if you don’t trust the papers).

Lordfrontpaw · 11/04/2020 14:35

Why would she stick her tongue out a Camilla?

SenecaFallsRedux · 11/04/2020 14:40

Why indeed? She didn't.

Lordfrontpaw · 11/04/2020 14:46

I’ve done worse to people who have deeply upset me (not Camilla).

DandyArgo · 11/04/2020 15:01

Yes the tip of your tongue has to touch your lips to moisten them. Or so I thought. Maybe Americans know better. Grin

Winterlife · 11/04/2020 17:34

The first two photos in @alliwantisagoodnightssleep’s link had stories behind them, and sticking out the tongue was done on purpose.

Lordfrontpaw · 11/04/2020 18:32

Just looked at the pics. Yup she has a habit of sticking her tongue out - and not in a ‘I’m thinking really hard’ way. Maybe it’s just an annoying habit.

Me giving people the finger, or the V sign is deliberate - definitely deliberate. DH says it’s childish.
