Royals and American media coverage

ButteryPuffin · 04/04/2020 23:50

Saw this cover posted on Twitter and noted that it seems the tabloids do indeed exist in the US (amazing, huh?). This is pretty much what you'd expect from the source, and I think it's pretty deplorable, but I am interested to see how the American media in general cover the presence of the former royals who've now arrived to make their home there. Of course we can discuss their coverage of other Royals too and related topics. All welcome.

Link to cover story - please note I'm not endorsing it, I'm just sharing it:

Yes, agree with what the article is saying, just the prose style is odd. Love that comment too!!

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 10/04/2020 07:13

I was laughing to myself reading that article. Very tongue in cheek.

Thank you for posting that Winterlife... really interesting piece of writing and such a polite and most indirect telling off for Megan (and Harry). Slinking off without so much as a thank you to people who have welcomed, helped and paid for you is clearly not a good look there.

I googled the writer and saw that he's from newfoundland...a place that to many encapsulates the depth and open heartedness of Canadian welcome. I'm going to be singing 'Welcome to the rock' all day .

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 10/04/2020 08:03

Very perceptive article with Harry’s name in brackets. I think that is the best descriptor for his future life

Brackets are intended to mark the once-and-no-longer-future prince’s drop in status from highest aristocracy to Ms. Markle’s distinguished companion. The cameras are mainly on Meghan now.

The performance where William and Kate sat sucking lemons?

I don't much care for WaK either. I am indifferent to all of them apart from in one sphere and one only. Here’s my take on the royals: As one of the masses, for the duration of my life, I am going to have someone at the apex - a queen, president, pm, etc.. My taxes will be used to support this person or organisation. My only interest is whether they help me and my fellow citizens also have a reasonable life(style). We may have a president but if they are dull and boring, nobody from anywhere is going to send their offspring here to study and to learn the Queen's English and drink tea (just one example, obviously, and perpetually under evaluation from both international and domestic perspectives), so less wealth for us. Royalty is glittery, intriguing and a source of fascination for the rest of the world. HaM aren't here to play this role and when they were here, made a hash of it. As somebody on another thread pointed out, all they had to do was turn up (that is literally their job).

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 10/04/2020 09:18

They were not sucking lemons. They were in a church at a service. H&M behaved badly. In church.

They’ll be fine for money from next week. I imagine PC is relieved

HMQ remains respected in so many places

7Worfs · 10/04/2020 09:34

Lack of decorum in a church, where have I seen that recently... 🤔

DandyArgo · 10/04/2020 09:35

Exactly. Look at everyone else’s expressions - they’re all appropriately solemn, even Prince Andrew next to Meghan. Harry and Meghan will have known it was televised - it’s disrespectful to both the setting and the performers to give a look and mutter something (him) and laugh like that (her).

Archewell · 10/04/2020 10:26

Were they a bit disrespectful to the Rev. Curry at their wedding, too?

Or was it only me who thought so.

DandyArgo · 10/04/2020 10:33

On first reading I though you’d written that they were being disrespectful to the Rev for having “curry at their wedding”. Was about to say what’s wrong with that, I had curry at my wedding too Blush

Lordfrontpaw · 10/04/2020 10:36

🤣

EthelMayFergus · 10/04/2020 10:36

I think MM treated the whole experience as a bit of a lark, from giggling at solemn occasions in church, to sticking her tongue out to Camilla.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/04/2020 10:39

She is the Fergie of the 2000s. That didn’t end well.

EthelMayFergus · 10/04/2020 10:42

math said earlier that they wouldn't have leaked the whole Archewell news to The Telegraph because it just wouldn't make sense to do that right now, and I think that's what sparked my interest in them - nothing they've done in the last two years has made any sense. I'm not particularly interested in them as people, but the self sabotage is spectacular.

The only thing that would make some sense out of it now is if I found out it was all just a big royal family team effort to make William and Catherine ten times more popular at Harry and Meghan's expense. If that was their objective then they've played a blinder.

CallmeAngelina · 10/04/2020 10:42

Re: Archewell - someone has just pointed out online that it's pretty much an anagram of her "real" name - Rachel.

LaMarschallin · 10/04/2020 10:43

But MM is all about spirituality, isn't she?

Or is Christianity too mainstream and boring?
After all, it was David Beckham - who's been Harry's/their pal for a-g-e-s, just because of their stirling qualities and nothing to do with wanting a knighthood - who said he wanted to get his child christened.
But wasn't sure into which religion...

Archewell · 10/04/2020 11:03

I remember watching H & M's wedding, and wondering why they had chosen Rev. Curry to give an address.

bluebell34567 · 10/04/2020 11:52

after that they cant go back to Canada easily if they arent happy in LA.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 10/04/2020 12:24

I’m sure Meghan (and Harry) will go anywhere it suits here (them). If she isn’t welcomed with open arms and mucho fawning she will just say people are being nasty to her.

lizzie1970a · 10/04/2020 12:32

I think lots of them were laughing at the American Reverend. I thought all laughing were rude. This is his style, it was a religious place, you don't laugh at someone. Why M laughed along, I don't know. Surely she chose him and it knew his style? Why then make him a figure of fun? It just makes me think was he brought it to be laughed at?

BarleylemonPenguin · 10/04/2020 12:32

I’m sure Meghan (and Harry) will go anywhere it suits her

I see what you did there Grin

BarleylemonPenguin · 10/04/2020 12:34

LIzzie - I agree. I didn't watch the wedding but am aware that the Reverend was laughed at. Awful behaviour.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 10/04/2020 12:36

As a scorched earth policy it's pretty effective really.

I liked Rev Curry, I thought he was great! Laughing at a wedding is ok in my book (as long as with not at), but the Commonwealth service, although a joyful event is actually also quite serious.
