Royals and American media coverage

Saw this cover posted on Twitter and noted that it seems the tabloids do indeed exist in the US (amazing, huh?). This is pretty much what you'd expect from the source, and I think it's pretty deplorable, but I am interested to see how the American media in general cover the presence of the former royals who've now arrived to make their home there. Of course we can discuss their coverage of other Royals too and related topics. All welcome.

Link to cover story - please note I'm not endorsing it, I'm just sharing it:

Nought like a pissed off Canadian....

BarleylemonPenguin · 10/04/2020 12:52

yolo - I thought that he was laughed at mockingly? As I say, I haven't watched the wedding so this is just what I've picked up from various sources to go with oodles of other HaM trivia that I now know Blush

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/04/2020 12:54

I remember watching H & M's wedding, and wondering why they had chosen Rev. Curry to give an address.

Perhaps because he is the primate (Presiding Bishop) of the US Episcopal Church (the counterpart of the Church of England in the US) and is African American. His position is roughly the same as the Archbishop of Canterbury, excepting of course, the whole established church aspect.

Meghan, who would have understood that he was speaking in an age-old tradition of black preachers, was not laughing at him, but my guess is that other members of the RF who were unfamiliar with that tradition likely were.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 10/04/2020 12:57

barley yes I think the laughter/giggles behind the hands were quite mocking, so not appropriate.

HarryDaylight · 10/04/2020 13:16

I remember the Reverend Curry, he was wonderful and full of joy. Surely the whole point of a wedding is to smile and celebrate?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/04/2020 13:30

@Winterlife brilliant article by Rex Murphy.

Loved his language and turn of phrase.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 10/04/2020 13:42

How in the world with H&M make money after Covid19. All they really have is Harry’s trauma of his mother’s death. Given the awful death toll around the world I personally can’t imagine anyone wanting to here his sad story. How do we think the press will deal with that.

He complains about going to her funeral and walking behind the coffin - many many thousands weren’t allowed to say goodbye to their loved ones and never had proper closure.

I just think that they will discover that they are completely excess to requirements especially if we do have a major recession/depression.

ArchePenguin · 10/04/2020 13:44

Meghan was the only one who was NOT laughing at him. I think it was because he ran over time and the Queen was getting pissed off as he was delaying the schedule - he was allotted something like 3 minutes and went in for 16. I’m sure it was a case of “Granny’s going to be so ANGRY” rather than mocking the reverend who, as I understand it, was invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Meghan behaves beautifully so all credit to her.

BarleylemonPenguin · 10/04/2020 13:48

Not at Wimbledon she didn't.

HugsyForever · 10/04/2020 14:08

Laughing at the Reverend was unacceptable. Is that when Kate gave Camilla the side eye?

ArchePenguin · 10/04/2020 14:19

That was autocorrect.i meant “behaved” - obviously she has let herself down in many other subsequent occasions! Grin

EthelMayFergus · 10/04/2020 14:46

I thought Meghan was Jewish? Is her dad Jewish?

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 10/04/2020 14:50

Her ex husband was Jewish.

Myimaginarypenguinhasnofleas · 10/04/2020 15:19

I can't say I especially enjoyed Rev Curry's address. He overran because he was overplaying his part with the pregnant pauses and excitable gestures and got carried away with himself.

But it was very, very rude of them to snigger at him. He was due some respect for his position in the Church and they ought to have shown better manners.

EthelMayFergus · 10/04/2020 15:33

Ah, thank you alliwant.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/04/2020 16:12

Bishop Curry wasn't overplaying anything. His preaching was very much in the mainstream style used by many African American preachers. I don't think he should have been expected to change that.

Myimaginarypenguinhasnofleas · 10/04/2020 16:36

I'm perfectly familiar with that style. I just don't think he was the best example of it on that occasion.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 10/04/2020 17:10

If you've been asked to stick to 3 mins and run to 16, then it's kind of inconsiderate to everyone else involved in all the organisation.

Myimaginarypenguinhasnofleas · 10/04/2020 17:27

Although to be frank, the idea that someone of his stature in the church would be allocated a mere 3 minutes shows extraordinarily bad planning.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/04/2020 18:13

I think he was allocated more than three minutes, but likely not the full 14 or so that he took. But not sticking precisely to a strict timetable is also a time-honored tradition in African American preaching. For me, it was the best part of the wedding.

artemisalways · 10/04/2020 18:18

MM seems to change her religion quite often, it would seem.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 10/04/2020 18:35

I don’t think she converted to Judaism but happy to be corrected.

She was raised as a Protestant (Episcopalian?) but attended an all-girl Catholic private school. I think she was baptised Church of England before the wedding.

Prince Charles did want to be known as Defender of the Faiths when he becomes King so maybe she can give him some pointers.

Archewell · 10/04/2020 19:09

For me, it was the best part of the wedding

And I, Seneca.

I really enjoyed his preaching.

7Worfs · 10/04/2020 19:33

😂 😂 😂

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 10/04/2020 20:15

I thought she did convert to Judaism, am sure I read that. It goes with the actress/chameleon playbook though, and the modus operandi of changing self to fit the situation - for as long as it suits.
