Royals and American media coverage

ButteryPuffin · 04/04/2020 23:50

Saw this cover posted on Twitter and noted that it seems the tabloids do indeed exist in the US (amazing, huh?). This is pretty much what you'd expect from the source, and I think it's pretty deplorable, but I am interested to see how the American media in general cover the presence of the former royals who've now arrived to make their home there. Of course we can discuss their coverage of other Royals too and related topics. All welcome.

Link to cover story - please note I'm not endorsing it, I'm just sharing it:

There is a type of pseudo scorpion that lives in old books.
It lives off tiny mites so they are a good thing.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 09/04/2020 17:35

Yeah books are just what you have, it's normal. However having read about the pseudo scorpion I am feeling a bit queasy...

Chartreuse45 · 09/04/2020 17:56

Marie Kondo has definitely clarified that she did not mean it as a rule about books. Obviously if they spark joy . . . That's her message not orders and rules! If I find the place I heard it I'll link!

TheMustressMhor · 09/04/2020 18:16

Pseudo-scorpion?

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 09/04/2020 18:27

Chartreuse45 she is slightly forgiven then. And I apologise for getting her name wrong but she gives me an irrational rage.

mathanxiety · 09/04/2020 18:40

I'm shocked and horrified that anybody feels they need to mention that they own books.

Yes indeed LaMarschallin, I was shocked too.

I was even more shocked that anyone would boycott a book shop though. Especially anyone concerned about censorship.

mathanxiety · 09/04/2020 18:40

...and professing to be open minded...

mathanxiety · 09/04/2020 18:41

.. the free world isn't really free.

Ya think now?

mathanxiety · 09/04/2020 18:45

...no one outside The Telegraph's editorial board, knows whether or not anything would have been reported. That's all speculation on your part.

It's completely obvious that the rushed statement, sans url for their website, was precipitated by the scoop. Hence the Gold Digger opportunity presenting itself to whatever bright spark it was who did it.

BarleylemonPenguin · 09/04/2020 18:45

Ya think now?

It’s the best we’ve got. We’ll take it, warts and all.

mathanxiety · 09/04/2020 18:49

But what I didn’t understand, and maybe you can shed some light, is why they all clapped him at his final engagement (When Meghan was wearing the matching red dress). Did they do it through gritted teeth?!

There are photos of the event. You could examine them for signs of gritting of teeth.

It's entirely possible they think he's a good egg all the same, though it's clear that this is a possibility not to be entertained and certainly never admitted by many on this thread.

HarryDaylight · 09/04/2020 18:51

Ya think?????

Yes indeed LaMarschallin, I was shocked too.

Now, you know I meant you and your "(book-lined) shelves".

Be off with you and your faux-naïf post.

Or, given your interest in the media, you could Google "Pseuds' Corner" in "Private Eye".
If they still feature it.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 09/04/2020 18:54

please stop with the lectures mathanxiety? Because it's actually quite dull, and quite derailing.

I may have mentioned (!) I am a Navy brat. What H did by bunking the Marines off for a Disney gig with Beyonce was so completely disrespectful. And yes, manners really do matter - and manners were what were on display from our armed forces, rather than anything else.

WinnieTheW0rm · 09/04/2020 18:59

I think the need to puff off bookishness is quite deeply ingrained.

Look at all the commentators (not on Royals, on anything) right now who are dupialling in from home and who choose to sit in front of their bookshelves

HarryDaylight · 09/04/2020 18:59

Plus not only were they displaying excellent manners in a difficult situation where they had been badly let down, they were applauding the Captain General, not him per se.

Winterlife · 09/04/2020 19:01

You really are not a broad thinker, math. Boycotting one bookstore for their owner’s censorship of thought doesn’t mean I boycotted books.

I’ve lived in a totalitarian society. I wasn’t about to allow someone to dictate what I can or cannot read. So, I objected by withholding my dollars and redirecting them to competitors who support freedom of thought.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 09/04/2020 19:04

yes harry exactly that, applauding the role and not the individual.

Exactly

mathanxiety · 09/04/2020 19:19

In a free society, a bookshop has the right not to sell or to sell whatever books it wants to, Winterlife.

Surely you can demonstrate your support for the principle behind that, and applaud their choice by continuing to buy your books there?

It strikes me as rather pointlessly sniffy to do a one woman boycott too.

mathanxiety · 09/04/2020 19:21

Hopefully you wrote them a zinger of a letter explaining why they had lost your business. Otherwise they might have been tearing their hair out wondering why you weren't darkening their door any more.

HarryDaylight · 09/04/2020 19:22

What does sniffy mean?

ButteryPuffin · 09/04/2020 19:24

It strikes me as rather pointlessly sniffy to do a one woman boycott too.

Isn't that the same as what you do with the Daily Mail?

Harry - snobbish, unnecessarily picky.
