Royals and American media coverage

ButteryPuffin · 04/04/2020 23:50

Saw this cover posted on Twitter and noted that it seems the tabloids do indeed exist in the US (amazing, huh?). This is pretty much what you'd expect from the source, and I think it's pretty deplorable, but I am interested to see how the American media in general cover the presence of the former royals who've now arrived to make their home there. Of course we can discuss their coverage of other Royals too and related topics. All welcome.

Link to cover story - please note I'm not endorsing it, I'm just sharing it:

Does anyone have any other book-lined rooms? Mine are spread out all over the place, I have a theory that a 'book-lined study' is a bit like one of those posh designer thingys to make the property owner appear erudite, even if they're not.

We have books in 3 out of 4 bedrooms, the living room, the playroom, the kitchen, the study and will shortly add more to the landing if I can convince DH to build the bloody book cases!

Lordfrontpaw · 09/04/2020 12:32

My dad had 2 (an office and a study) and a weird walk-in cupboard that was lined with bookshelves. God, I love books.

RosesandIris · 09/04/2020 12:34

I have them everywhere too. Have had to take loads to charity before a few cent house move which broke my heart.
In another previous move we sold a job lot to a bookshop. Then realised there were two first edition signed cookies that are worth a lot of money now. 😫

RosesandIris · 09/04/2020 12:35

Copies!!

jeffgoldblumlovespenguins · 09/04/2020 12:37

My book lined rooms ,all got condensed into my kindle 🙁.dh always thought it looked messy! (I miss the smell of real books!)

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 09/04/2020 12:37

I remember hearing that Kondos woman saying that we should get rid of books once you have read them. That was when I realised the rest of what she was saying was probably nonsense too. We have books all over our house. I have some that I may or may not have borrowed (stolen) from my local library 30 plus years ago.

Froq · 09/04/2020 12:38

Grin cookies and onions - this thread makes me hungry.

My house isn’t even lined with anything, books are in boxes in the loft (moved ‘recently’). Am I allowed to post slightly illiterate opinions? Sad

I think I'd take a dagger to myself. You have my sympathies.

Thank you for giving me the justification I require to continue with my hoarding tendencies. If i were braver I'd post a photo of my sitting room, with the books.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/04/2020 13:36

Dad had a load of really old books - probably worth a fortune even then. Mum loved books but had a thing about really old ones (germs), hence the various rooms with books I suppose.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 09/04/2020 13:56

Books dont seem to be worth much these days - I lugged about 2 tonnes of naval history, naval architecture, poetry blah blah after clearing DM's house. I got £30 for 3 books and gave the rest to the charity shop.

My house is mostly lined with animal fur (black dog and 3 black cats). It's a look I suppose.

TheMustressMhor · 09/04/2020 14:03

I have a book-lined bedroom.

Does that count?

OVienna · 09/04/2020 14:37

yolo I have fur here too. So much fur. We like things fluffy here. I don't like cleaning much, though.

yes book lined bedrooms count.

LaMarschallin · 09/04/2020 15:46

in the comfort of my (book lined) study.

How funny! Both "ha-ha!" and "peculiar".

About the only tip I was given before going off to university interviews was:
Don't mention that 'reading' is one of your hobbies. They expect you to be able to do that by now.

Jillyhilly · 09/04/2020 15:49

I have 3 book-lined shelves and some fur-lined slippers, is that ok?

BarleylemonPenguin · 09/04/2020 15:49

Mathanxiety - the free world isn't really free. Its freedoms are relative rather than absolute. Individual free will (what we have of it) exists on a spectrum, with totalitarianism at the other end. In 'free' societies, if I want to set up a blog criticising HaM, I can. In a less free society, that decision would not be mine but someone else's and imposed on me. It's a permanent tussle between free will and totalitarianism.

yolo - I agree that books aren't worth much these days. Fewer people seem able to lose themselves in a book for hours. I think that our attention spans have been affected by online technology.

😁

TheMustressMhor · 09/04/2020 16:19

Ah.

If animal fur is counted, Mhor Cottage has a good deal.

If I add it to the book-lined bedroom, can I join the thread?

TheMustressMhor · 09/04/2020 16:20

Or at least, am I entitled to apply to join?

Grin
TheMustressMhor · 09/04/2020 16:21

I have a blog. Is that as good as a book-lined bedroom or a fur-lined cottage?

Math: But you seemed so shocked, so horrified.

Not at all Confused

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 09/04/2020 16:52

I read somewhere that with the advent of Twitter young people especially find it difficult to read books as it has affected their attention span - 140 characters maximum. I don’t know if that is true but I can believe it.

LaMarschallin · 09/04/2020 17:07

But you seemed so shocked, so horrified

I'm shocked and horrified that anybody feels they need to mention that they own books.
Like it's an unusual and notable thing for them.
I thought it was just...well, normal?

TheMustressMhor · 09/04/2020 17:16

Owning books is indeed normal, LaMa.

When we moved to Mhor Cottage our books did not arrive for seven weeks. They were sent separately, by my sister.

We felt quite bereft without them.
