Here's a follow on to the last thread, which was really enjoyable.

I think when, and if, the govt gets its act together HMQ might do an address to the nation about kindness, supporting each other etc

I think they will come back if the Coronavirus situation continues for months. They appear to have accepted an invitation to Balmoral this Summer according to reports yesterday.
Balmoral by May l would guess, if not sooner.

RosesandIris · 16/03/2020 14:25

The Queen doesn’t go to Balmoral until August though.

If Coronavirus gets worse, the Queen will be safest isolated in Scotland

I’d be there now if it was mine. Glorious isolation in such a beautiful place.

At this rate the Sussexes will be on Vancouver Island for the foreseeable future.. whatever their longer term plans may have been. Coronavirus is going to put a stop to travel.

agree butterypuffin. US has closed its borders, not sure about Canada? maybe we'll make an exception for HaM? (wouldnt be the first time)

Do hope that Russian oligarch doesnt want his pad back anytime soon...

At the moment Trudeau is saying that many airports will be closed and travel will be limited. The situation changes daily. The Victoria airport, which the Sussexes have been flying out of, seems likely the sort of smaller airport which would close. YVR (Vancouver) will of course stay open (though I suspect flights of fancy vs necessity will be limited). So yes, we may be stuck with them and them with us for longer than they anticipated. Thank goodness they can send to Whole Foods here for groceries! And if Harry misses British food we’re wall to wall fish and chip shops here.

rita I'm sure a private jet would work though (bugger the environment this is a crisis!) However it sounds like a safe, pretty, lots of fresh air type place to sit it all out, which is a damn sight better than many can expect. Just hope the poor bloody security team dont get stuck - dont think its like they can just upsticks and go home is it? (either RCP or the Brits).

Report
lidoshuffle · 16/03/2020 16:51

Yeah, I feel really sorry for the security team. Especially if they got hoiked off from Kensington Palace, and seeing their own families every day, to what they thought way a temporaru posting to Vancouver Island and now being stuck over there.

Report
Ritascornershop · 16/03/2020 17:43

It must be incredibly frustrating for the security staff. At least it’s not colder than London, but they must be bored to death and missing friends and family.

Also - how are they able to work here? Sure they’re getting paid from the U.K., but at the end of April (or whenever the six months is up) wouldn’t they need work permits? It may be quite a bit more difficult to switch up staffs during the virus crisis.

Ritascornershop · 16/03/2020 17:52

This just happened in Canada “ Canada is barring entry to all travellers who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today.“ They have closed all but the major airports, so to get off the Island presumably HaM will have to take a ferry (or super-yacht) with the peasants as the Victoria airport will be closed.

Report
yoloPenguinsEatfish · 16/03/2020 18:09

rita then the UK security staff should be sent home, they didnt choose to be there. HaM will presumably be fine, unless there are lurking terrorists on the island, which seems unlikely.

Report
Ritascornershop · 16/03/2020 18:15

I would think they’d be equally at risk from nutters, but yes, I think the security staff should be allowed home with no career repercussions. They could find, I’m sure, good security staff even if they have to bring them in (via plane then boat) from Vancouver or Toronto (or Ottawa - I’d think the nation’s capital would be awash in good security).

Report
yoloPenguinsEatfish · 16/03/2020 18:22

It's not a big place, paps maybe but surely not that many nutters?! I'm sure Canada has a big private security industry... my DD1 is due to come back from working in France on Weds, if my DH was working in Canada and possibly stuck there for the foreseeable I'd be screaming my head off!

Report
Ritascornershop · 16/03/2020 18:28

No more nutters than anywhere else. But there’s about half a million on the Island and I think the population of the Lower Mainland is about 3 million (90 minute ferry ride away), so I don’t doubt they need security. They don’t need it paid for by the state though.

We should start a campaign ala Free the Weatherfield One - Free the Met Security 6 (or however many there are).

Not necessarily; the Victoria harbour is also a designated "airport" and movements are by float plane, which by their very nature are small (they're quite fun to watch actually Smile)

I don't suppose for a minute H&M would be refused one all to themslves ...

Report
RubyViolet · 16/03/2020 19:43

Maybe LA makes sense for them now. The U.K. protection team may not want to be stuck anywhere for months, especially if they have families.
An LA compound with US security for now may be easier.

They could always return to Frogmore Cottage, plenty of security there. There are going to be very few earning opportunities for them over the next few months. It might be their only realistic option.

Really, it's quite a nice distraction to think about a very over-priviliged couple and their child, whereas the rest of us are pretty much cannon-fodder to a virus and the whims of our various govts at the moment. Cry me a fucking river HaM.

lidoshuffle · 16/03/2020 19:57

A sensible option security-wise, but can you imagine the atmosphere of the inevitable bumping into the rest of the RF, having made their departure in such a bridge-burning fashion? Despite HM saying the door is always open etc, H&M did things very unilaterally and messily.
