The description of Kate is 7 years old. It wasn’t fair then or now but I imagine Kate’s moved on

HarryDaylight · 02/03/2020 20:11

I think it is horrible that Mantel uses her odious misogyny to promote her deeply boring books.

SussexRoyalTies · 02/03/2020 20:19

winterlife I rewrote Mantel’s description of Kate and used Meghan’s name instead of Kate’s.

Winterlife · 02/03/2020 20:27

Ah, ok. I still think it's better to have a smile than look grumpy. Grin

7Worfs · 02/03/2020 20:31

Winterlife what a Canadian thing to say Grin

Where I come from people regard smiling and visible happiness with great suspicion. It's miserable.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 02/03/2020 20:32

When you think about the people who tell others to be kind and then see their behaviour you realise what hypocrites they are. I’m looking at you Jameela Jamil.

Butterymuffin · 02/03/2020 21:22

How unpleasant of Mantel to insult both women, Kate and Diana, in her comparison of them. Diana was very much a flawed person but she also managed to often exude tremendous poise and presence in public engagements - it's very unfair to describe her only in term of her confessional, private or 'interview' persona.
Kate has interests and preferences that are very different to mine, and I wouldn't want her life, but she must have a layer of steel to be able to cope with it all. I admire her grit and her ability to keep smiling.

PelicanPie · 02/03/2020 21:28

What deeply unpleasant remarks. I don’t particularly like HM much as a personality and have not enjoyed her books, thought I’ve tried hard. I really think her comments are horrible and unfair.

FiveTwoFaster · 02/03/2020 21:48

Hilary Mantel is v uncomfortable with her own weight and thus bangs on and on using the word thin as an insult. There are plenty of things you can find to dislike about Kate if that is your wont, but knocking her for her discipline and love of sport (which is doubtless why she is thin) combined with good genes - Pippa and Carole are also pencil slim - says more about Hilary’s self esteem than Kate’s figure.

PelicanPie · 02/03/2020 21:51

Agree

FizzyLimes · 02/03/2020 22:11

Thanks for that description of Suits winterlife

I used to watch it. My favourite characters were Donna and Louis Litt.
Harvey Specter was very easy on the eye!

bluebell34567 · 02/03/2020 22:12

that Mantel writer is talking all rubbish.

bluebell34567 · 02/03/2020 22:15

she must have a layer of steel to be able to cope with it all. I admire her grit and her ability to keep smiling. completely agree with that.

Apparently the Queen has told Harry he’s welcome anytime to come back to the firm.
To be honest, I don’t know why they don’t base themselves in the UK.
They’re always leaving Archie and he’s the biggest security risk; from kidnapping.
He should be kept at Frogmore, close to the extended family and no need for extra PPOs.
Meghan and Harry should just travel for work.
The whole situation is getting ridiculous and unaffordable .
They can buy a house in LA for the holidays and pay for their own security when they are overseas.
Either they / the Queen or Prince Charles can foot the bill when they’re not working Royals in the UK.

Do they have Tumble Tots in Vancouver? Asking for a friend.

7Worfs · 03/03/2020 06:48

I’m surprised they leave him behind so much - MM wanted a home birth, was breastfeeding and overall came across as the type of mother who’d go for very responsive and attached parenting.

GracefulHippo · 03/03/2020 06:58

Just to chip in quickly... we don’t know how much Archie really is left without any of his parents.

And even if they travel quite a bit, I think that as long as he is with a nanny he really loves (and who he is allowed to form a real bond with), he will be fine.

The messed up children I have seen have been those where the parents are away extensively, but also are worried about their children bonding with another mother figure, so have a revolving door of nannies.

I do feel sorry for the Queen not seeing him though. And the cost of security is a different issue.

StartupRepair · 03/03/2020 07:17

I get the sense that the Queen and doe are not very sentimental about babies. I'm sure they love Archie as Harry's child but don't know that they are craving to spend lots of time with him.

DandyAF · 03/03/2020 07:26

There’s a big difference though between craving to spend lots of time with him and wanting to see him once after a three-month or more gap!

I think it’s quite odd that Archie (and the nanny) aren’t coming.

OP posts:
Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/03/2020 07:38

I think they are just trying to protect Archie from becoming public property and I don't blame them for that. I do think there are ways they could privately return to the UK as a family to visit HMQ and PP and the fact that they are choosing not to do so is another issue.

WinnieTheW0rm · 03/03/2020 07:54

He wouldn't become 'public' property just by travelling with his parents. There will be no official airport welcome (this isn't a foreign tour), so no photos. Straight to wherever they stay. Then same protection prctocols as baby Cambridges (rarely papped, never published in Britain). Nice if they released a pic (esp as this is last month as working Royals) and of course that's entirely under their control

Exactly Winnie. Also no matter how good the nanny, a nine month old is better off being in the sane continent as his mother where possible. And it is possible here.

ajandjjmum · 03/03/2020 10:23

They didn't take him to see HM and PP in Scotland in the Summer, although they managed to travel elsewhere to holiday with friends. I see that as showing that they don't worry about the creation of a relationship between Harry's family and Archie. Very sad.

Although, of course, there was the iconic photograph of Archie with HM and PP when he was a couple of days old - which I thought at the time was beautiful.
