More than 90 per cent say taxpayers should not have to pay Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's £20m security bill, Good Morning Britain poll finds

I wonder how long it will be before BP addresses this.

PelicanPie · 02/03/2020 17:17

BP won't address it. It will just ignore public opinion. However, I think a lot of people will become anti monarchists as a result of all this.

DandyAF · 02/03/2020 17:22

I think you might be right PP. I have hope it’ll have to be addressed. It will not endear HaM to the British public.

Lost this thread.

Dandy, from my friend -

Gabriel Macht is a super person. Very approachable and kind. Laid back. Appears to be a very devoted family man (said "appears" as friend doesn't know Gabriel's personal life, and, one never truly knows). Very easy to work with and for.

Sarah Rafferty - Has the sassiness of her character (I don't know what that means, as I never watched Suits). She is also a wonderful person, also very approachable and kind. A total professional.

Patrick J. Adams - Funny guy, has Canadian politeness (a positive in friend's view). Seems to want more than an acting career.

Rick Hoffman - Favourite. Really cool guy.

Meghan Markle - Friend said had no negative experiences with her, but she is someone who treats you differently, depending on your station and friend's impression was this was whether that station was something MM could use for her own benefit. Friend said MM got along with her castmates, but not all crew viewed her with positive feelings.

Said every negative thing you've read about her has a kernel or more of truth in it. My friend also said that in some ways, this is understandable, as it's the way of the entertainment industry, particularly for actors, and more so for those with little natural talent. So in some ways, the way MM treats people and behaves could be a product of her experiences as a third rate actress who hit what would probably be the only success in her career. (Friend's words, not mine.) I think friend's point was that the entertainment industry is ruthless, and actors have to have some ruthlessness to survive in it. But friend's overall impression is not positive.

On a side note, friend said absolute best celebrities friend ever worked with were Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Both are exceptionally professional, friendly, great to crews (especially Travolta), an absolute delight to work with/for. Friend is not a Scientologist, thinks it's a cult, and it's just a coincidence friend's two favourite stars to work with/for are both Scientologists.

@user1471590586 When they went to the Canadian Embassy last time, wasn't it about getting their Visas?

Both Brits and Americans don't need visas to enter Canada. They can stay in Canada for up to six months visa free.

eggandonion · 02/03/2020 17:29

Is it this week Kate and William are coming to Ireland?

Winterlife · 02/03/2020 17:35

@alliwantisagoodnightssleep I don't think the relationship with the Commonwealth will be the same. In Canada, about 2/3 of the population says the monarchy has no relevance. I think there is attachment to HM, but not to Charles or others. The British press has stories about Canadians in Saanich "protecting" HaM, but it's really more about their dislike of strangers. They're like this all over Vancouver Island, even though tourism is a strong source of revenue.

It will be interesting to see if coins and the $20 bill are changed once HM passes, and if so, will Charles' likeness be on coins, in particular.

When I was a child, we sang God Save the Queen in the morning, and her photo was in every classroom. That is no longer the case, on both counts.

Someone on the other thread mention MM's veil, with the flowers of the Commonwealth. The designer (I assume) took the idea from HM's coronation gown.

DandyAF · 02/03/2020 17:42

@Winterlife thank you so much for the brilliant breakdown Wine So pleased to hear Gabriel M and Sarah R are wonderful. He is meant to be (and comes across in press and social media ) as almost the complete opposite of his character, which shows he is actually ‘doing acting’ Grin

Interesting about MM.

I’m assuming you’re in Canada then?!

Yes, I'm in Canada.

So glad to hear this. I know many people have never watched Suits, but, although it was just a cable show, I think it had sort of a cult following, with most people watching for Harvey. Donna, the character played by Sarah Rafferty, was a close second In popularity.

DandyAF · 02/03/2020 18:25

Not forgetting Louis Litt!

Which is the character, Winter, of your friend’s favourite - Rick Hoffman. He was a fan favourite and had the best lines.

Winterlife · 02/03/2020 18:35

I remember Rick Hoffman from The Practice.

Hilary Mantel's take on Meghan and racism. Publicity seeking?

StartupRepair · 02/03/2020 18:45

Yes recycling photos from Meghan's 18 months as a working royal is going to get old very fast.

HarryDaylight · 02/03/2020 18:45

Publicity seeking? Yes. Pretty vulgar to do it so obviously.

derxa · 02/03/2020 18:51

During a lecture at the British Museum, the double Man Booker prizewinner said Kate appeared "gloss-varnished", with a perfect, plastic smile; this was in contrast, the writer said, to Princess Diana, whom she described as awkward and emotionally incontinent. Mantel's remarks were made two weeks ago, during a lecture organised by London Review of Books, a month after her latest novel, Bring Up the Bodies, won the Costa prize. The lecture, entitled Royal Bodies, was on royal women under the public gaze across history.
Mantel said: "Kate seems to have been selected for her role of princess because she was irreproachable: as painfully thin as anyone could wish, without quirks, without oddities, without the risk of the emergence of character."She appears precision-made, machine-made: so different from Diana, whose human awkwardness and emotional incontinence showed in her every gesture."Mantel, whose latest novels are set in the Tudor court, said she saw Kate becoming a "jointed doll on which certain rags are hung". She added: "In those days [Kate] was a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own, entirely defined by what she wore.

Pretty nasty comments about Kate.

Winterlife · 02/03/2020 18:54

Yes, those are very nasty.

I think Diana was emotionally unstable. Kate is not. That's the difference.

HarryDaylight · 02/03/2020 18:59

Mantel is seeking publicity, and only has to spew out some nasty crap about the royal women, and her books get front page press.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 02/03/2020 19:13

Mantel has had it in for Kate since 2013. Some of the things she has said about Kate have been awful.

This is where I get confused. It is ok to criticise Kate for all sorts of things but when they write the same stories about Meghan accusations of racism are voiced. I’m not saying that there hasn’t been an ugly element of racism but criticism should be allowed where due.

SussexRoyalTies · 02/03/2020 19:19

Yes, a shameful dissection of Kate.

SussexRoyalTies · 02/03/2020 19:20

Hmmm let’s see...

Meghan has a plastic smile who is devoid of personality and is nothing but a clothes horse....

Winterlife · 02/03/2020 19:25

Plastic smiles are very common among Americans, particularly in service industries and meeting others. I see nothing wrong with MM’s plastic smiles. Would it be better if she faced cameras grumpily?

TheMostHappy · 02/03/2020 20:03

Wow I'm quite saddened by that description of Kate. She's extremely professional and probably shit scared of putting a foot out of line. I think she does a fantastic job. And looks amazing whilst doing it.

7Worfs · 02/03/2020 20:06

Kate is always getting bashed about her body ('too thin' etc), probably by the same people who preach body positivity in their next breath.
