Carrying on the conversation as the last thread finished mid-discussion.

Sophie Wessex 'ready to fill Meghan Markle's shoes'?

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8074401/How-Sophie-Wessexs-engagements-increased-following-Prince-Harry-Meghans-retreat-Canada.html

Oh, I do hope so.

yolofish · 05/03/2020 14:50

Sophie always seems like a pretty good egg to me, and she had a particularly tough time with Louise's birth. She and Edward seem to have their heads down and get on with things nowadays.

DandyAF · 05/03/2020 15:00

A few months down the line it will be a different story I suspect. The clock will be ticking as the end of their first year looms. Then the RF will start playing hardball

I think you’re spot on Pelican
The tide is already turning for them in terms of celebrity supporters. I read a very interesting piece the other day that demonstrated this.

Sophie has served her time. Good to see her getting recognition. Now let's see her given one of the really gorgeous tiaras Grin

DandyAF · 05/03/2020 15:03

Tiara Wars! A new reality TV show coming to your social media screens SOON.

I would absolutely watch a tiara-themed show Dandy!
Can you link the piece you read the other day about the Sussexes and celebrity support? Sounds interesting.

Who is Penny?

yolofish · 05/03/2020 16:30

I think Penny and Phil have been 'friends' for years, they share an interest in carriage driving. I know Phil is an absolutely dreadful old racist, but I do have a very soft spot for him - he put up with an awful lot over the years, and I have a sneaking admiration for his ability to put his foot in his mouth and still survive. Also, he has always been there for HMQ, and at their age I don't suppose she cares that Penny is able to pop in often and talk about carriage driving.

EinsteinsArousedSausagesHCB · 05/03/2020 16:49

Placemarking.

Have been lurking since thread 8, I think? I've absolutely nothing to add although I have enjoyed following the conversation.

However my watch list doesn't seem to like the current thread, I'm hoping 'I'm on' does, hence the placemark.

lyralalala · 05/03/2020 16:49

Who is Penny?

She is the daughter-in-law of his cousin Patricia Mountbatten. Her father was Louis Mountbatten, killed by the IRA and largely credited/responsible for introducing Philip and the Queen.

Penny's sister-in-law, Amanda Knatchbull, was subject of an attempt by her grandfather, Lord Mountbatten, to set her up with Prince Charles.

The two families are very entwined. Penny has often been seen in the car with HMQ.

Given that the other rumoured lover of Philip was Princess Alexandra, the Queen's own cousin who she is known to be very close with, HMQ is either very accepting or it's just gosiip

PelicanPie · 05/03/2020 17:08

It’s faintly ridiculous for anyone to talk about PP having a lover at his advanced age. He’s a very old man in poor health. His shagging days are long gone.
The fact is that the Queen is still very busy and he is probably nodding off in a bath chair most days. I read somewhere that he can’t cope with much conversation these days and just wants peace and quiet.
Penny lives nearby and pops in a lot I imagine. The Queen visits regularly I think. I’m sure she would love to be able to retire but her sense of duty prevents that.
It’s all perfectly understandable . I don’t know why something lurid needs to be read into the situation.

PelicanPie · 05/03/2020 17:15

Just seen pics of Meghan and Harry outside the Goring Hotel. So staying at a hotel apparently. More unnecessary expense. They both look great though. Pics on the Style and Beauty Thread.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 05/03/2020 17:20

I agree, PelicanPie. My understanding is that Penny acts as his companion. It's possible PP needs a degree of discreet supervision from a trusted friend and to that end she is helping HMQ as much as PP.

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 05/03/2020 17:22

They both look very good indeed. And relaxed. So have they got what they wanted or putting on a brave face?

PelicanPie · 05/03/2020 17:28

Styling it out as someone said on the other thread I think!

Butterymuffin · 05/03/2020 17:33

They do look relaxed - much better suit on Harry. I wonder if the Queen has been encouraging about security costs. Reminds me of the photo of them leaving Canada House.

FizzyLimes · 05/03/2020 17:34

I think the guy holding the umbrella’s face says it all...

I think the face and the hand belong to different people?

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 05/03/2020 17:42

Not enamoured is he? The Goring staff are usually fab.

FizzyLimes · 05/03/2020 17:44

There are 2umbrella holders.

To quote my MIL ‘pfft’.

Extraordinary no one can put them up! —Or maybe put up with them—

PelicanPie · 05/03/2020 17:54

The fact that they aren’t staying with W and K or at BP says a lot I think. Put on the glad rags, best smiles, go through the motions whilst minimising contact with the family, then RUN!
M’s make up artist has been flown in from NY. A bit over the top.

I think the face and the hand belong to different people?

Good grief, that is weird.

Allflightscancelled · 05/03/2020 17:57

I'd look relaxed after four months in a luxury seaside retreat.

Man in the hat definitely looks like he'd rather be in the warm having a cuppa
