Well here we are, another thread for those who wish to discuss. We are not nasty, but we do call account on what is going on, and and what taxpayers pay for.

What's the issue with @ing?

Some posters use it to bully other posters off threads!

Oh good grief (just catching up).

What the hell is the etiquette for using @ in front of someone's name?

I've tried not doing it then been reprimanded for not crediting a poster with their name when quoting their post. But I deliberately hadn't because of the "Don't @ me!" thing.

I now (laborious explanation) star the name of the person I'm quoting instead of using @.

I have used @ once in a deliberate attempt to get someone to notice me because I was addressing an innocuous question to them.

And I've noticed in the course of typing this, @ does weird things to me on MN.
Just putting in @ brings up a list of random names which I have to click on to get them to disappear.

well I consider myself well and truly reprimanded now! see this I find baffling. I disagreed with a point you made and this seems a strange way to react.

with regards @'ing, I gave up trying to follow everyone's preferences and still see who comments were for. If you don't like it, best to ask MN to remove the function I think.

I've not seen this so I'm not sure how it would work. I think i've seen attempts to bully people off threads though! So I don't think it hinges on @'ing, and definitely that's not my intention.

Sorry, x-post.

Do they?
How does that work?

And how - in the name of sweet baby cheeses - do they manage to use the bloody @ thing without having a list of names appear on their screen?

How is use of @ bullying? You just get an email letting you know you have been mentioned in a post. There is no conversation off-thread. That's what private messaging is for.

Also merely disagreeing with someone is not bullying.

Well, I’m on the thread Kirinm, and the @ sends a ‘hey’ email notification, so everyone on a these H and M threads decided not to @ as it’s overkill.

Maybe rocking forgot, or just didn’t bother with the previously agreed thread etiquette, whatever, I asked her not to @ me please, and to just mention me using the format we all agreed before.

You can call me Coffee as everyone else does... that way my inbox doesn’t fill up with annoying notifications, but I know you’re addressing me.
You can call me Wonderful as well, if you like Wink

HI, rocking. I have questioned MN about the trouble with the @. More from the point of view of how to stop it scrolling through other names.

But as to the actual etiquette of who likes it and who doesn't...

As I've said, I've messed up both ways.

Anyway, sorry.

Off topic.

How ironic that @ ing is sufficiently unpleasant to amount to bullying given the contents of these threads which are definitely NOT nasty because it says so at the beginning.

Well, Wonderful - we will have to agree to disagree - I'm not being rude, but practical for me Smile I'll try to remember but on my phone I find it easiest. Also, normally there is more discussion than agreement over thread etiquette I find...

La don't know I'm on iPhone and get weird list too , sometimes when trying to click it automatically attaches one randomly!
Very annoying!
Re bullying, normally it's fine to @ at someone if you want to ask a question or say something polite .
It's posters who continually @ the same poster or posters to harangue snd continuously demand answers over and over, is when it starts to become bullying, especially if the poster knows it's unwelcome.😀

Well, if rocking forgot, so did I, I'm afraid.

I thought I'd read through these threads but completely missed the @ accord.

I will remember it now though (although, as I said, I came to my own etiquette of generally starring).

The @ is a MN function to make it easier to respond to a poster - their name is supposed to comeup automatically when you start typing it (admittedly it doesn’t always work) . Saves remembering how names are spelled. You can turn the email notifications off you know. Easier to do that then expecting people to remember who wants to be attend and who doesn’t.

I've tried not doing it then been reprimanded for not crediting a poster with their name when quoting their post. But I deliberately hadn't because of the "Don't @ me!" thing.

Sorry @LaMarschallin but you’ve got a bad memory, this is bollocks Smile You said you thought you’d named me and apologised for not doing so. I’d asked you to name me (didn’t specify it had to be @!) next time you quoted a post of mine and criticised it as a general example, because the way you did it read as a passive aggressive pop at mr. I’d hardly describe it as me asking to be ‘credited’ when you were ripping into my post, but fair enough Grin and I did agree with the point you made.

This thread has got too hard work for me. Partly my own fault, stupid to get involved and explain my point of view about the as-I-call-him-thing as I hadn’t even commented on that at all, so not my battle 🤦🏼‍♀️ I like a bit of debate but this dynamic is too tiresome. Enjoy and thank you for the chat.

And this thread certainly hasn’t been around that long, thought it feels like that sometimes...

IIRC the not to @ decision was made a few M and H threads back, as the @ was sending notifications to the inbox and was deemed overkill.

we are all mostly dipping in / lurking when we can, (the pursuit of cats and wild garlic allowing), and no one needs the rather aggressive shout out... it’s like someone bellowing when you’re sitting right next to them. Just a bit off, you know?

LaM As per your post yesterday morning, 'I call him H', I have has exactly the same thoughts as you and came to exactly the same conclusion.

It was also a 'marking my territory' type vibe and it was definitely deliberate and contrived.

We are not overthinking Grin

Wow, Kayaking, ‘boring’ eh? I’m sure the Canadians are loving that!!!!

Well that’s handy for Madonna, as IIRC her building‘S management committee says that she doesn’t have rights in the building as her apartment isn’t occupied. She’s been living in Lisbon. They turned down some planning application as her flat was unoccupied.

H and M are turning into Andy and Fergie in front of our eyes. Sofa surfing royals, with loaners from oligarch friends... Whatever next... pay per view?

Why don’t they go back / go to Frogmore and lay low?

Is no one advising them on the optics?
