No harm in having it ready for the next event/announcement...

There's another thing that bothers me, and that is the reference to their "charitable entity". Charities aren't a vehicle for personal benefit. If their aims are entirely altruistic then fine, but if they are thinking of drawing an income from it, not fine. Not fine at all.

Of course things may be different under Canadian charity law, but English law is very clear about who charities can be set up to benefit, and it isn't their founders.

Or #SussexQueenCollab

Or #SussexWhoTheQueen?Collab

Lunde · 31/01/2020 15:43

One their new SussexRoyal website (and still there today unlike some sections that have been amended) it states
Their Royal Highnesses feel this new approach will enable them to continue to carry out their duties for Her Majesty The Queen, while having the future financial autonomy to work externally

This and the statement that they would continue to "collaborate" with the Queen does make it sound like their (original in any case) intention was to be semi-detached Royals. Where they would continue to carry out certain Royal duties and keep some of their patronages but have the freedom to choose to avoid certain roles and freedom to make money.

yolofish · 31/01/2020 15:44

"collaborate with the Queen" - she must have absolutely died at the arrogance that implies!

I think the charity stuff is about having a Foundation, which is popular in the US and seems to allow the founders to take a salary.

Here in the UK, you can set up a charity and you can certainly pay staff from it, but the Charity Commission are really strict about how you word the objectives and aims of your charity.

annielouise · 31/01/2020 15:48

I hope they don't have that Commonwealth Trust patronage, yolo. Maybe it'll become clearer in the spring (which was mentioned as date). Surely any work they do for that comes under the RF which the Queen isn't allowing?

Lordfrontpaw · 31/01/2020 15:51

‘Collaborate with’ what is this, an arts project or rap song?

annielouise · 31/01/2020 15:51

Yes, "collaborate with the Queen"! Did H come up with this? Surely not? But then if M did why did he sanction it? Is he clueless?

Lordfrontpaw · 31/01/2020 15:52

Makes me tuning of the Gwynth Paltrow divorce statement.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 31/01/2020 15:52

Sentebale and Invictus I think they could still do.

These are Harry's real successes and I hope he hangs onto them and gives them his full support.

I found this

Since the announcement, it emerged Meghan and Harry will continue as President and Vice President of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust - an organization that supports youth empowerment in Commonwealth countries.
The Duchess is also due to stay as patron of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

So yes, it looks like they will carry on in those roles.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 31/01/2020 15:55

Call me cynical but if I had patronages that enabled me to have a nice jolly to the Caribbean every so often I'd want to hang on to them. Especially if I was living through a Canadian winter.

annielouise · 31/01/2020 15:56

So they've still got a toe in the door. I think that's wrong. Any overseas trips under those patronages will be funded by the RF and come under the RF. I don't think a lot of the British public will be happy with that. I'm not. I think if that happens the RF is clueless. Look at the Queen and her handling of PA. It's like she allows things to happen - bad behaviour, feathering their nests, staying on the gravy train - as long as there's no major outcry and only does something when there is. Someone said before they don't care about the public's perception of them unless it's too loud, which I agree with.

annielouise · 31/01/2020 15:57

I agree Myimaginary - what a plum job! Wouldn't we all like it. Loads more people much more qualified than them too. I'd like them all to go.

EcocabbyRickShaw · 31/01/2020 15:58

There's a story in Cosmo today that says M is known to be actively looking for a manager and/or agent Hmm

annielouise · 31/01/2020 15:58

H will miss that kind of work. I can't see the glitz and glamour of the West Coast or wherever they end up making up for it. He'll ultimately be a fish out of water.

peridito · 31/01/2020 16:01

Annie I can see that stepping back implies giving up something .

I rather see the RF as part time workers ( Anne did 167 days last year ,tho I'm sure that there must be behind the scenes prep for some visits ) so I guess PH would have been doing less .

I don't quite see where the idea that he was planning to pick and choose comes from but I guess it's all in how you intepret something which ,as said ,lacks detail .

annielouise · 31/01/2020 16:02

They must be so bored on Vancouver Island if that is where they are. Staying close to home in case they're spotted. There can't be much social life there. I'd be going stir crazy. I wonder if it's like the last days in the bunker. Perhaps they're happy, making plans, flying friends and work contacts in but given the backlash there must be a huge element of doubt about how it'll pan out for H in particular. He's lost the most on the one hand. Yes he has his wife and child with him but one person can't give everything to you, it's not healthy. What niche does he see himself carving out that is separate from what M wants, I wonder.

Lunde · 31/01/2020 16:04

I thought that they wanted the Commonwealth titles but that the Queen had forced them to relinquish the roles?

DandyAndFine · 31/01/2020 16:04

I think it’s clear they fully expected to have things on their terms, and to cherry pick what they they wanted about being royal. I do find the arrogance of that distasteful.

A PP asked about their ambassador roles. I had a google and cane across this:

www.tmz.com/2020/01/28/prince-harry-meghan-markle-shocked-losing-commonwealth-youth-ambassador-role-title-megxit/

Lordfrontpaw · 31/01/2020 16:05

I know that if I had hauled DH off to AFN in Scotland he would go stir crazy within 20 minutes.

annielouise · 31/01/2020 16:07

Oh I agree peridito - none of them work that hard on a full time basis. Which has made me laugh when people on previous threads say they'll be thin on the ground etc and Beatrice and Eugenie might have to come back to fill in the gaps. How about they do some five days a week, 8-6 jobs like the rest of us, with 5 weeks holiday a year. They can't work more than 3 months of the year as it is condensed.

"I don't quite see where the idea that he was planning to pick and choose comes from but I guess it's all in how you intepret something which ,as said ,lacks detail ." Their website says this in the statement I just pasted. It's very clear that was what they wanted. I don't see how you can interpret it as something else, no one else seems to have. They didn't say step down - that would have been clear. It was step back, still doing some work for the queen but also working for ourselves. That means only doing certain jobs under the RF.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 31/01/2020 16:08

If that article in Cosmopolitan is true, they have ditched the idea of living in Canada then! I just cannot see Harry in LA.

annielouise · 31/01/2020 16:14

And obviously picking and choosing would come into that. I can't imagine if they were allowed to be half in and half out that he'll be told he must visit the pigeon flying association up in Scunthorpe as "someone has to do it". He'll say I want to do the more high-profile military get-together with the leaders of the G8 or whatever and "anyway M and I are in Silicon Valley schmoozing with Bill and Melinda the day of the Scunthorpe pigeon association day so we can't be there anyway, sorry granny". There would most definitely be picking and choosing.

Lunde · 31/01/2020 16:16

I really cannot see Harry being happy in LA. An odd choice for a couple that want privacy and less press intrusion to move to celebrity and paparazzi capital of the world!

DandyAndFine · 31/01/2020 16:21

I’ve always thought their end game was LA. I can see Harry living there. I think part of him has always loved the celeb lifestyle plus there’s the weather and outdoor element.
