She's got a lot more than she bargained for, that's for sure.

LaMarschallin · 20/01/2020 22:07

Maybe it wasn't security who freaked at the market, maybe it was a panic attack.

I always assumed it was MM who called a halt to that walkabout, but she certainly didn't appear to be having a panic attack.

They can be quite disabling.

I assumed she was hot, bored and fed up and wanted to get back somewhere nice and air-conditioned.

I'm not saying that's wrong, especially when someone's pregnant.

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 22:08

I think they both want out but for different reasons. She wants away from the RF but courts the media, he wants away from the media but not the RF. They are leaving together but necessarily on the same page. I remain unconvinced.

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 22:11

*not necessarily

StartupRepair · 20/01/2020 22:11

It was Meghan who wanted to 'hit the ground running'. I'm sure the public and the RF would have accepted her moving more slowly into her role. IMO she thought her confidence and experience on the red carpet and courting the media would exactly translate into being an effective royal. But there is a deep chasm of difference between self promotion and serving the nation and she has been unable to see that.

DandyAndFine · 20/01/2020 22:17

I really don't think Harry wants out of the media.
He may think he does, but he's been in the limelight his entire life and he's used to being revered. He wants to be known for making a difference and you don't get that without publicity.
He's always been social. He likes attention.
He just doesn't - in my view - like having to be held accountable and being rei(g)ned in.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 20/01/2020 22:24

I never got the feeling Meghan was ever interested in serving the nation. I don’t think she was interested in this country orbits traditions. She seemed to be courting the US market the whole way through. Her manner was that of someone putting on a performance but behind the performance there was no one home.
I think the scenario you outline goat could be accurate in many respects. I think the stress of it was down to a mismatch between expectation and reality.
I thought it was a big mistake to expect her to go on a huge tour on the other side of the world when just married and in the early stages of pregnancy. She should have been allowed some time to adjust and find her feet. It was a huge ask. The lessons should have been learned from Diana. She was completely exhausted and overwhelmed. Expected to so gruelling walkabout when sick with her first pregnancy. Awful.

Just looking at the pictures of William and Kate tonight. He looks like he hasn't slept and she looks sad and distant.

They look exactly the same as always to me! Professional, happy and smiley.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 20/01/2020 22:33

Mince. I had mince for dinner TheMustressMhor

Well, bolognese to be exact.

Tonight we had steak and red peppers casseroled in redcurrant sauce with baby new potatoes.

Ok I seriously need to up my game.

Or find myself a Barber who shoots.

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2020 22:35

Anyway, Harry must be well on his way to Vancouver Island now. Off to begin his new life!

SunsetBoulevard3 · 20/01/2020 22:37

dingdong
I clicked on pictures of them arriving. The later ones look much happier. I do think they are very good at appearing happy and engaged even when things might be difficult however.

yolofish · 20/01/2020 22:38

I'm OK, because DH made a casserole involving butter beans, lardons, chorizo, red peppers, peas plus baguette and salad. We have agreed to leave the lardons out next time because it was a bit salty - but delish.

Re game: a friend whose husband shoots asked me if I'd like some pheasant - lovely, I said. Came home one day to find a fully feathered brace on the door knob - we ended up getting rid of them because I'm not doing the plucking and drawing, and couldnt find a butcher who would on grounds of elf n safety. Also, DH lost a bit of tooth on biting into a bit of pheasant my ex boss shot. Game is bloody dangerous, I tell you!

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2020 22:40

Yes, they really are true pros.

thenightsky · 20/01/2020 22:40

There was a fabulous documentary on tv recently about Wallis and Edward. It was before Xmas and I can't remember which channel. My google appears to be broken for some reason Confused

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 20/01/2020 22:41

GoFiguire & Curly that's what I was thinking, Harry has married his own version of his mother.
As we're playing armchair psychologist, I thought it was quite telling that Harry used the word 'my Mum' rather than 'my Mother' in his speech. To me his speech suggested that he's actually reaching out to that 12 year old boy & saying you have permission to be sad, angry, frustrated & confused & I will be here to help you find your way.
Now I know that sounds all gobbledygook but if any of you have been through psychotherapy as a patient or a therapist, I think you'll get what I mean.

I think well I'm hoping Meghan means well & does truly want what is best for Harry, for everyones sakes.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 20/01/2020 22:42

I bet there are loads of photographers waiting to get shots of Harry arriving in Vancouver.

augustusglupe · 20/01/2020 22:42

Kate and William make a great couple. She doesn’t need to be constantly gazing at him, stroking his back.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 20/01/2020 22:43

I wonder if there’ll be a shot of a loving reunion all in close up?

SunsetBoulevard3 · 20/01/2020 22:44

Oh Jesus Christ. What next!

SeperatedSwans · 20/01/2020 22:44

Rumour has it, she declined all support and to be eased in like Kate was though.

I mean we will never know the truth. But her weird Canada visits to me make me lean more towards she's impatient and doesn't listen.

Lessons were definitely learnt from Diana, it's the reason Kate has been softly introduced and rightly so.

derxa · 20/01/2020 22:54

I never got the feeling Meghan was ever interested in serving the nation That's it.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 20/01/2020 22:55

But there is a deep chasm of difference between self promotion and serving the nation and she has been unable to see that.

I think this hits the nail square on the head. I remember Kate's first public engagement with William. It was small, low key and she was gradually eased in.

H&M went on a tour around the country shortly after their engagement announcement.

A lot of wannabe celebs do what I call the charity of self-aggrandisement, where every charitable contribution and endeavour is used as an opportunity to raise their profile and judged as worth pursuing through that lens. It is vital not just to do, but to be seen and congratulated for doing it.

If that is what you are used to, and no amount of adoration for your efforts is enough, then serving purely for the sake of giving or upholding the institution, becoming subsumed into the whole and taking a back seat is going to be too much.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 20/01/2020 22:56

Chocpear it's not just me who hates Edward's suits, it's all of us on the Royal Style & Beauty threads on the S&B board who want to burn Edward's suits. We like to think Sophie has been amongst us 😂.

JulieWalters I've just remembered that William used to call the Queen 'Gary' as he couldn't quite say Granny properly. Maybe that's what I was subconsciously thinking about it hence Garry & Meghan or more likely it's the tiny keyboard on my phone, so I hit 'G' instead of 'H'

MarySidney · 20/01/2020 22:58

Anyone think this might bring PCs regency closer?

A regency would only be required if the Queen was incapacitated and unable to carry out her constitutional role.
