peaceanddove, Meghan is a perfectly intelligent woman who I'm quite sure never for a moment thought she was going to live in a fairytale castle. What I suspect she was unprepared for - because who would be - was the sheer level of horrible vitriol that came her way even for innocuous stuff like eating avocados

But he should have prepared her more thoroughly. He should have told her that the British press are not sycophantic and deferential like the US press and that they would be brutal, that most of his family had suffered and that she needed to rise above it and it would get better in time, and that the British expect good value for money from their royals.

FlickingVees · 20/01/2020 18:20

Well, I’ll try and stay on topic, be as boring as possible and tone down my sparkling wit and knowledge of botany for fear of a backlash from the thread Stasi.

But I have been thinking about PH’s mental state, and I wonder if he’s not suffering from Post traumatic stress from even as early on as the death of his mother.

We all know Diana got into a car with a drunk driver, who drove recklessly fast in a tunnel, and that most importantly wasn’t wearing her seat belt and died from a ruptured aorta as her internal organs shot forward and then backward with the impact. She was not killed by the paps who shot her with some kind of arrows- she just died from internally bleeding, and might have survived has she been wearing her seatbelt.

If you think about why she had a drunk driver instead of proper security, the finger points to the RF who denied her this when she divorced.

Obviously, no one likes to take blame for someone’s death, so it’s a more convenient narrative to say it was the nasty press wot done it. And that’s where PH has laid the blame, rather than his Granny or dad.

If you remember the reason why HMtQ didn’t come down to London was she was supporting her grandsons... my thinking now is that Harry actually fell completely apart in those days and may have suffered real and lasting damage neurologically from the trauma.

Serving in the military in an active zone such as Helmand province must have exasperated any PTSD he already had... it’s quite common for military personnel to experience it, and especially if there has already been trauma in childhood.

I wonder if PH shouldn’t just check in somewhere nice and quiet and do a hella amount of therapy... even child centred therapy... in order to address any old wounds he may have.

I also think like a previous poster that a quiet life in Lesotho would have suited him a lot better... and maybe the delay in him going to Canada is because they can’t decide where to live. Apparently MM wants to hit it up big time in Toronto, and he wants to chill the fuck out in Victoria or Vancouver island, in the wilderness.

I would strongly advise him to stay undercover in Scotland, or go to Lesotho and get the help he needs rather than bouncing from so called gilded cage to having to grind the organ like some kind of monkey exhibit at the Fair.

I think these threads have real value as a kind of cautionary tale.
I think if PH posted in relationships, he might be told to LTB.
I do hope he’s OK.

BTW I like the comments about dinners, electric cars, nail varnish colours, and wild vegetation... I find them funny.

How’s everyone?

I keep thinking that this must be a really interesting time for Harry - hard but maybe he will see it as a wake up call. I do put this all down to him and his choices - I think it's obvious from the 'many years' comment in the initial statement and the website (that I keep going back to because at the end of the day, they've signed off on both of those.) I really wonder if he knew before these talks what exactly was involved in keeping the whole RF on the road - all the people behind the scenes, the costs he didn't see etc. I think it's not a stretch to say he didn't know as much as he thought he did. If he didn't know, he bloody well should have. And my finger pointing on that front is straight at PC, his parent.

A poll I just saw showed that 73% of Canadians don't think Canada should pay for their security. Something will be figured out but I do wonder if they'll end up the focus of negative publicity out there, unexpectedly, around rumours around this.

More hard decisions ahead, I reckon.

phpolly · 20/01/2020 18:26

I thought that Diana refused royalty & specialist protection after her divorce, not that the RF took it away from her?

yolofish · 20/01/2020 18:28

Oh thank god it was gateau not ghetto! thank you to PPs for confirming that I completely misheard.

eggandonion · 20/01/2020 18:29

I know Toronto is a massive city - it sounds like a brilliant city. But I'm sure there are lakes, wilderness, woods, wildlife, kayaking and the rest very close by. I'm sure there are excellent therapists in the fabulous Canadian health service should they be needed. Also in Vancouver. I hope he has someone with him on the flight, if he is en route, and I hope they can all work things out within the family and within their working lives.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 20/01/2020 18:30

ElloBrian Nicholas Witchell (sp?) said it as an aside while reporting on the developments last night and today.

strictlymomdancing · 20/01/2020 18:30

I'm confused about the comma issue, what's the big deal? in what way does it make her appear a divorced royal rather than just being her title?

MrsBrentford · 20/01/2020 18:31

I am sick of the sight of their faces now tbh 🤣🤣

EdithWeston · 20/01/2020 18:32

"I thought that Diana refused royalty & specialist protection after her divorce, not that the RF took it away from her?"

That's correct. She had to have it when the Princes were with her, and it was her choice not to at other times

strictlymomdancing · 20/01/2020 18:34

and Camilla's face says it all, and her pause before saying 'course'.

Done in such a way that she can argue she was surprised by the question - yeah right.

Well done Camilla.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 20/01/2020 18:35

gilded cage to having to grind the organ like some kind of monkey exhibit at the Fair.

Great analogy.

Just seen NW on the News saying Harry is now en route to Canada. I wonder what he's thinking and feeling? I should imagine he is in turmoil
I do think the whole thing has been rushed to an unseemly degree, but I think it's because Meghan has just put her foot down and said she can't take it anymore. It's forced his hand. He has no choice, as he says himself.

I do think he is probably suffering from PTSD. I also think he is suppressing a lot of anger against his father and the system for what happened to his mother, but he can't allow this to become conscious because it would undermine his whole existence. I said this earlier in the thread.

I think Meghan needs to step up to the plate now and support him and understand what he has given up for her. Instead of insisting he live in Toronto they need to find a compromise. Unfortunately I don't think Meghan does compromise.

GoFiguire · 20/01/2020 18:36

According to Flightradar24 the plane was 20 mins late so he took off at 6pm. BA85 if anyone is interested.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 20/01/2020 18:37

Sorry just read your comment Bewitched.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 20/01/2020 18:37

I think you may have hit the nail exactly on the head Flicking

yolofish · 20/01/2020 18:37

Maybe they are both damaged enough to help each other? I cant get over how bloody sad he seemed and how much he is giving up for her and Archie. I do hope it all works out (I suspect it wont but I still hope for that).

MrsBrentford · 20/01/2020 18:38

I bloody love Camilla GrinGin

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/01/2020 18:40

Interesting. ITV news said Harry went into negotiations wondering why he can’t be like Beatrice or Eugenie who have jobs and keep his HRH.

Well I think I can answer that one. They have jobs albeit part-time. They are not trying to flog the Royal brand.
Also, they are much lower profile. And, they have never been disrespectful to the Queen, called the RF toxic or the UK a load of racists.

So he’s on his way to his new home in Canada.

You have confessed on a public forum (MN, no less) that you cannot ride a bike.

This may lead to your being black-balled.

You know that an ability to cycle is a sine qua non for the aspiring MNetter.

I am shocked.

It's worse than you think.
Nor can DH. His top secret, very outing hobby isn't cycling, it's (I'm so ashamed) chess.

I agree with pretty much everything FlickingVees says about his mental state . But his mother refused Royal protection partly supposedly because she thought ( probably with some justification ) that they would report back to the RF about her every move . When the children were with her this wasn’t so much of a problem as they had protection officers but when alone she was vulnerable and increasingly something of a loose cannon, lets not forget the rather dubious background of the man she was with that night .

I don’t have strong feelings about Diana but I do wish the media wouldn’t sanctify her so much. She was a deeply damaged women / girl long before she met PC. She was selectively mute for several years after her mother left and she had serious attachment issues leading to a string of ill advised affairs. Marrying PC was disastrous for her she needed nurturing and constant attention and he married her to get an heir and a spare .

PH seems stuck at 13 , it’s very sad , he just can’t seem to move on . For his own sake and especially for his sons he needs to get some help. I know it was an appalling experience but he blames everything in his life on that event. I was just reading about the politician Ed Davey and he lost his father when he was 4 and his mother when he was 14 which must have been awful as well but like many others he has been able to move forward , let’s hope PH can too.

phpolly · 20/01/2020 18:45

did I miss a link to a Camilla interview?
I love her too. Loved her wink off-camera behind Trump's back on one of his visits to BP

LaMarschallin · 20/01/2020 18:45

@JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper

An electric bike? Hmm...

With garlic turbo-charger, perhaps?

I like it!
