I like Garry and Meghan - goes so much better with Brenda

Prince Philip was a prince of Greece, but in order to marry the Queen he had to renounce his Greek title. He wasn't happy about it but had no choice. He was also very unhappy that he was 'strongly advised' to give up his family name of Battenburg, as it was considered too Germanic sounding for the Queen's husband. Prince Philip compromised by creating a more Anglicised version of it 'Mountbatten'.

In other news, the Queen was furious that her father refused to give Philip an HRH when she married him. But her father was jealous of Philip and hated losing his daughter to him, so he didn't want to give him royal rank. It was only when her father died and she became Queen that she had the power to make her husband HRH.

Just had a goggle at Bagshot Park, home of Sophie and Eddie.

Wow, what a pile!

You can never go wrong with cream sauce.

peaceanddove · 20/01/2020 17:21

In all fairness, Meghan probably assumed she was going to be Princess Meghan and live in a fairy tale castle. So she was probably prepared to put up with being married to a hard of thinking ginger. But when it transpired she'd ended up with a lookalike care home house and just a Duchess, I bet she was majorly pissed.

eggandonion · 20/01/2020 17:21

Sophie seems nice, I wonder if she is! I know she was in PR and that led to trying to sell tickets to meet the family, but I think there was entrapment? The queen seems to like her.
They will need to employ some minor family members to fill up the Ascot carriages.

peaceanddove · 20/01/2020 17:27

Also I don't mean to push myself forward, and I know the role has already been taken, but I would be more than happy to provide holiday/sickness cover for whenever some Royal Marines need inspecting. I would be extremely thorough and hands on in the role.

yolofish · 20/01/2020 17:32

DH trod on Sophie's foot once at some posh charity do just before they were married. She was very nice about it, and her security let him live. At the same do I sat next to a handsome chap, asked him what he did, he said he was a rugby player. I said, wow can you make a living out of that? It turned out he played for England.... sigh, you cant take us anywhere!

Anyway, am still up for the Navy inspections but have to decline royal duties due to love of garlic. Not being able to eat garlic = dealbreaker in my book.

diddl · 20/01/2020 17:34

"He donated his Army pay to charity."

Oh yes, William did as well, didn't he-well RAF pay to EAAA

Lordfrontpaw · 20/01/2020 17:35

Yolo - I think we may be related. Any ties to Aberdeen?

DulciUke · 20/01/2020 17:37

He was also very unhappy that he was 'strongly advised' to give up his family name of Battenburg, as it was considered too Germanic sounding for the Queen's husband. Prince Philip compromised by creating a more Anglicised version of it 'Mountbatten'. Prince Philip took the name Mountbatten from his uncle, Louis Mountbatten. The Battenburg name was changed in World War I. Prince Philip's real complaint was that the Queen was going to continue to use the name Windsor instead of her husband's surname of Mountbatten.

Equanimitas · 20/01/2020 17:40

peaceanddove, Meghan is a perfectly intelligent woman who I'm quite sure never for a moment thought she was going to live in a fairytale castle. What I suspect she was unprepared for - because who would be - was the sheer level of horrible vitriol that came her way even for innocuous stuff like eating avocados.

yolofish · 20/01/2020 17:42

lord sadly not but as per earlier convo about genealogy perhaps we need my dead Aunt Betty! we could be honorary cousins perhaps?

yolofish · 20/01/2020 17:45

re horribleness and I am not sure if this is even true, but earlier today there was something on sky, where the presenter was talking to some 'royal expert' and opened the interview by saying: "as one of the tabloids said, Harry has realised he cant have the ghetto and the chateau". The interviewee didnt pick up on the comment.

Does anyone know if that's true, that a tabloid actually printed that, today in 2020? After all the conversations of the last 10 days? Fuck me.

MikeUniformMike · 20/01/2020 17:46

It was gateau not ghetto.

diddl · 20/01/2020 17:47

" she'd ended up with a lookalike care home house"

Well I wouldn't turn my nose up at it!

What is it-4 beds?

Fab gardens & surroundings!

For free was it initially!

Ninjava · 20/01/2020 17:48

Yep. Gateau (the cake) not ghetto. Was in the Mirror.

diddl · 20/01/2020 17:49

Well tbh they didn't turn their noses up did they-the workers were moved out & it was converted back to a house.

BBC News just said Harry took off for Canada about an hour ago.

ElloBrian · 20/01/2020 18:16

Hmm do they usually announce when royals are in the air? I thought that was one of the no-nos.
