MaisWeee

Our current Queen's father was George VI
George VI had several brothers, one of whom was Prince George, Duke of Kent
Prince George married Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark
They had Prince Michael

Make sense? Wink

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 14:28

@MaisWeee

George V is the Queen's paternal grandfather. He had three kids, one of whom is Prince George who had a son called Prince Michael of Kent who married Princess Michael of Kent

GoFiguire · 20/01/2020 14:29

Anyway, back to garlic. The Queen will not eat garlic. Maybe the rift was caused by a particularly sharp aioli.

eggandonion · 20/01/2020 14:29

The Wimbledon Kent's always seemed sensible and reliable, the duchess was a beautiful bride. PrinceMichael seems ok, my dh shook his hand once. But the wife was always a bit iffy in the tabloids. Foreign, divorced, Nazi, German, spendy....

MaisWeee · 20/01/2020 14:29

Tracey beaker - THANK YOU! I thought there were only the two brother's, the Queen's father and the fella who abdicated. There were 5 of them!

MaisWeee · 20/01/2020 14:31

Sorry to derail the thread. Makes sense then, if there were five siblings. Jeez, she must have millions of cousins.

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 14:31

sorry PuzzledandPissed off I cross posted.

I had to think myself there a minute! Right, Must go this time. Sainsburys garlic be it wild or farmed beckons...

@MistressMhor are you still alive? Wink

RUOK · 20/01/2020 14:32

Sorry the thread moved on very quickly.

To expand on my comment about the outer reaches of royalty being Harry and Meghan's destiny if they followed the past order of things I think it's a) one of the issues of being a second or later child of someone titled and b) a failure on the part of his family or tutors to equip him well for another kind of life.

Unless you become a landed Duke, a title only doesn't pay the bills. Who knows what kind of thing Harry might have done, but the thing I think about Meghan is that not only does she want to thrive she is built to STRIVE and has done well for herself in her career and in life so far. A personal fortune in tens of millions won't support them though, it needs to be hundreds of millions like some of their celebrity friends. It's also got to be a factor that they want to establish a better personal background for Archie going forward, who wouldn't.

It's just a great shame that no one thought of this years back and that when Harry came to marry it wasn't negotiated before the big royal wedding and the new titles that lead the public to believe they were happy for everything that goes with that.

If Harry had kept his birth title only and Meghan had refused one maybe they could probably have set up a foundation and she could've done commercial work that the crown deemed of a suitable nature, voiceovers and documentaries, after all Edward did albeit not very successfully and being low key from the off wouldn't have attracted all this hoo hah.

notmoresheep · 20/01/2020 14:33

MaisWee take a look at the life of George, Duke of Kent (the Queen’s uncle and the Kent’s dad). An eye opener.

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 14:35

MaisWee you're welcome by the way........

MaisWeee · 20/01/2020 14:35

Oh do tell @notmoresheep! I presume that's where William and Kate got George from? Or was the Queen's father George also? BRAIN. FRIED.

Equanimitas · 20/01/2020 14:36

If it's really about Meghan not being able to cope with the press then why didn't just she step down from being a 'senior royal' and be a full time mum.

Because of course that would go really well. Look at the way the unfortunate Duchess of Cambridge got castigated as lazy just for taking some maternity leave.

MaisWeee · 20/01/2020 14:38

Who dafuck would willingly marry into this madness lol.

I'm sure there are a few skeletons in my own family tree. Alcoholics mainly. Not sure anyone achieved much.

Notthissh1tagain · 20/01/2020 14:39

The Queens dad was known as Bertie or Albert.

When he became king he chose George.

Charles when he becomes king may not be King Charles.

It is bloody confusing

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 20/01/2020 14:40

MaisWeee our Queen does have loads of cousins as her mum (the Queen Mother) has 9 brothers & sisters!
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Elizabeth_The_Queen_Mother)

Equanimitas · 20/01/2020 14:40

Just heard a royal correspondent finish off an interview with 'He won't be going as a prince and he won't be going as a Royal Highness'.

I thought they couldn't remove the title Prince from him?

I don't think anyone has removed either title, it's simply that he won't be using them.

MaisWeee · 20/01/2020 14:41

I do know Harry is Henry actually. Madness!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 20/01/2020 14:43

I know I'll get shot by a thread police, so warning ignore the following as it is 'offensive' (garlic)

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 20/01/2020 14:45

Nine brothers and sisters? The queen has/had 9 Aunts and Uncles on her mums side?

Anyway, back to garlic. The Queen will not eat garlic. Maybe the rift was caused by a particularly sharp aioli.

I think there's a pungent possibility

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 14:46

TracyBeakerSoYeah

Wink I ilke your style. Any up date on the electric cars and if so any recommended electric royal carriages?

notmoresheep · 20/01/2020 14:46

MaisWeee everyone has a tricky uncle, HMQ is no different. Uncle George allegedly had problems with drug addiction, affairs with women and men, an illegitimate child with an American drug addicted socialite, threesomes. Y’know, the usual bacchanalian excesses of the British upper classes.

OVienna · 20/01/2020 14:47

@JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper I happen to have all of those ingredients. Including garlic.

notmoresheep · 20/01/2020 14:47

I’m more shocked the Queen won’t eat garlic!

MaisWeee · 20/01/2020 14:47

My father believes we're related to this person and my mother believes we are related to this person
I'd love to go on Who do you think you are.

The claims to fame are not entirely clutching at straws. On my father's maternal side, she was a Lynn and had a lot of uncles etc. who moved to America and were never heard of again. Alcoholism runs deep in the family and Loretta Lynn's father was by all accounts an abusive alco.

On my mother's side, my grandmother's surname was Regan. Would have been pronounced Ray-gan. It's likely that when moving to America, Ronald's ancestors pronounced it thus and hence the difference in spelling - Regan vs Reagan. Both came from the same part of Ireland.

eggandonion · 20/01/2020 14:47

It is confusing because they change names if they want when they take the throne, and they are duke of somewhere but don't live there.
There was Prince John who died, there was a BBC mini series on him. He had epilepsy, and lived on the sandringham estate.
