Strengthening the commonwealth!

Are they having a laugh?

Interestingly they also reported that there won’t be a fourth Cambridge baby as Kate can’t bring herself to sleep with William since his affair.

I was amazed she had a second, never mind a third after suffering from HG in pregnancy!

wheretonow123 · 18/01/2020 21:13

serving the Monarchy

yeah right!

Come back in 12 months and boast this if that is what you have been doing in the USA and Canada.

So basically H&M's ambition is to become posh social media influencers - using their platform to espouse on selected social, ethical and political issues while at the same time monetarising their "brand" through selling themselves and accepting high value gifts (clothing, housing, jewellry, transport etc) from the Uber rich

It is going to be a difficult balance and the risk is that you end up in Goop territory or ... as seems to be their issue right now ... lecturing on climate change while taking daily flights with an entourage

It seems a long way from Harry's original ambition of charity work in Africa

wheretonow123 · 18/01/2020 21:15

Did William have an affair?

Seriously, I am not close to these things, hadn't realised that.

JulietJanuary · 18/01/2020 21:16

Don't put their links near me or I 'll come out in hives!

Every click counts.

ajandjjmum · 18/01/2020 21:17

I don't believe it for one second. If he has, Kate is the most marvellous actress.

PattiPrice · 18/01/2020 21:17

I was amazed she had a second, never mind a third after suffering from HG in pregnancy!

The Queen had four and she wanted the same apparently.

A relative of mine has been hospitalised for HF in all three of her pregnancies so far. The first never put her off having more either.

The80sweregreat · 18/01/2020 21:17

Meghan living in Africa!
I could never see that ' in a month or Sunday's ' to be honest. She probably said yes years ago just to reel him in then changed her mind after the wedding!

JacquesHammer · 18/01/2020 21:18

If he has, Kate is the most marvellous actress

Which is ironic since people dislike the fact that Meghan was an actress......

StartupRepair · 18/01/2020 21:20

Think one of the saddest bits is Harry severing ties with the military. The Queen has an official representative in Canada already, the Governor General.
Doesn't look as if h and m have upheld the queen's values so far. Hope they get reined in the first time they do something tacky.

2020BetterBeBetter · 18/01/2020 21:20

I think the really important bit from the statement has been overlooked here - While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty. So surely this has to mean no revealing interviews, publishing tell all books and getting sponsorship deals etc. I suspect the reputation of the Royal Family was the top priority to the Queen and getting a Non Disclosure Agreement signed and an agreement of certain behaviour to be adhered to was more important than anything else. I do agree that it has been left so that Harry can return to the Royal Family to use HRH in the future if he divorces.

GlitchStitch · 18/01/2020 21:21

Just joining new thread! I'm glad they are no longer representing the RF at all, despite their initial statement that they would 'collaborate'(!!) with the Queen. I wonder if Meghan's antics this week made the Queen realise she was a loose cannon and she doesn't want anyone to think they are representing her when they start emailing random organisations. Or maybe that was Meghan's plan, now she doesn't have to do any stuffy royal duties.

The reimbursement of Frogmore is clearly damage limitation due to the backlash about it, be interesting to see if they ever do pay anything back.

I think they have overestimated their worth though tbh. What do they really have to offer now? Meghan is a good speaker but it's all rather vacuous and little of substance. Harry is not particularly bright. They have no expertise, or gravitas in a particular field. They are now basically celebs who are famous for being famous. It's a bit naff really and I can't see many A Listers being too interested.

CakeandCoffeeQueen · 18/01/2020 21:21

When I was a kid I used to listen to an audio book called I ‘the queen and I’ The setting is the UK, after the 1992 General Election, where the House of Windsor has just been deprived of its Royal status by the People's Republican Party and its members made to live like normal citizens. they live in a council house putting 50p’s in the heater

From the Vancouver Sun hmmmmmm- did you also read what they think of the British at the end of the article?!

mum2jakie · 18/01/2020 21:23

Think that was a novel by Sue Townsend (author of the Adrian Mole books.)

The80sweregreat · 18/01/2020 21:23

Maybe Kate can disengage ; her job : you look great and smile and seem ok.
At home your you and get on with it. Plus her family are supportive I bet. She has a real team behind her.
Lots of women forgive affairs and we don't know if any of that is true. It's just speculation and gossip.

Lilybetsey · 18/01/2020 21:23

I don’t think people dislike Meghan for being an actor, or being mixed heritage, or American or anything else to stat with. I think most people felt she was a beautiful woman, that PH loved her and were delighted that he had a ‘happy ending’

It’s how she has behaved in the last 20 months , ONLY 20 months, that has resulted in a large percentage of the population feeling that she is a manipulative, scheming freeloader who is pulling Harry’s strings and is only out for herself.

JacquesHammer · 18/01/2020 21:25

it’s how she has behaved in the last 20 months , ONLY 20 months

Yeah, opening car doors and not wearing tights in January has been brutal behaviour. And definitely don’t forget all that bump-touching.

peridito · 18/01/2020 21:27

I've read 11 pages of this thread so not completely up to date .

Have I missed discussion on the first sentence of the Queen's statement ?

Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions

HRM seems keen to emphasis that H&M didn't drop a bombshell . She need not have started her statement with this .

I know it's shocking but I believe that she wants to correct the narrative and to show that she does not agree with all the criticism H&M have received over the manner of them leaving .

I thought it was telling that the Queen was reported as saying that she wanted the matter resolved in days not months .

Also interesting is the word "shared" here

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home

almost as if it were H&M's idea ,though of course that won't fit with many posters' thinking .

annielouise · 18/01/2020 21:28

I hope the press keep an eye on whether the deals they do are in-keeping with upholding the queen's values - they didn't seem to be when H was shamelessly touting for business with Disney.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 18/01/2020 21:30

We may soon have royals, however. Keep an eye out at Jericho Beach.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly named the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as the Markles. We apologize for the error.

From the Vancouversun.

Delicious. Grin

NumbersStation · 18/01/2020 21:30

They will be on a shopping channel flogging candles like the other ones...

This smells like my royal knob end.

This candle smells of hint of arsehole.

This candle smells of Vancouver.

This candle smells of greed.

And for those who love a certain Mr Partridge, I do believe their first endorsement will be for Conrad Knight Socks.

MarySidney · 18/01/2020 21:31

Think one of the saddest bits is Harry severing ties with the military.

Yes, because he really did seem to love the Army. But I'm guessing HM sought advice about this, and that was the message she was given. Plus it has to be made clear that they can't pick and choose what they do. If you want to maintain ties with the military, that has to include doing the bits that you might find boring.

annielouise · 18/01/2020 21:32

Any merchandise selling under the Sussex name is going to be tacky so surely they can't do that. The Sussex name implies royalty when they're not doing royal duties any more. I can't imagine the fools that will buy crap like that but there will be people that will.

So what else will they do to earn money? Voiceovers? Speeches? Very hard to do charitable work and seen to be charitable but then earn money as well. Surely you'd want to keep the two separate?

I had a thought earlier they chose Frogmore due to it's proximity to Heathrow and it being away from London. I'm more convinced now that is the case - they can come and go as they please without many knowing. I hope the reporting of them in this country dies down in time, just like it did with Fergie.
