@Hoik

Thank you for that! Interesting read!

Junie70 · 18/01/2020 20:51

They are "dropping" the title.

There is an ocean between "dropping" and "stripping".

I feel quite angry, tbh. They're getting it all their own way, and the taxpayer still gets their £7m security bill.

Aridane · 18/01/2020 20:52

strips????

or 'gives up', as per the BBC ("Harry and Meghan give up royal duties and HRH titles")

And what a lovely statement by the queen:

The Queen said following "many months of conversations and more recent discussions" she was "pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family".
"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family," the statement continued.
"I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.
"I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.
"It is my whole family's hope that today's agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life."

They are not abdicating. As no longer working for 'The family' they can not be called HRH- although would imagine if they 'came back into the fold' jointly or singularly, and became involved, the title could again be used. Paying back for Frogmore is perfectly reasonable and should be non negotiable. No longer having any patronage for the army will be difficult given the amount of time he spent with armed forces personnel present and past. Hopefully whilst not lo her having Royal patronage he'll still be involved in issues for ex servicemen, but time will tell- will also be dependent on how much time will be spent in the UK and if it will be even with Canada or juts flying visits.

Echobelly · 18/01/2020 20:55

I presume this is what Meghan and Harry were expecting anyway? Obviously lots of the media will portray this as harsh punishment, 'serve them right', but I would have thought this was pretty much what they were asking for. They've made it clear they were OK with funding themselves (and they won't lack for personal wealth or ability to charge vast sums for public speaking if they want) - I can't imagine for a moment they were expecting to keep the perks without the resposibilities, but of course it will be portrayed that 'ambitious' (eg black and American) Meghan was. Because of course this is entirely a woman manipulating a man, and not at all about a marriage where just maybe a couple made a joint decision as equals. Hmm

PortiaCastis · 18/01/2020 20:56

Where does it say anything about 7 million for security?

MaButterface · 18/01/2020 20:56

They are absolutely going to divorce if things don't work out.

I liked Meghan in the beginning, thought she was a strong, confident woman, but when someone has a pattern of destroying relationships left and right as she has, you notice, else you're a fool.

PortiaCastis · 18/01/2020 20:58

How do you know if they're going to divorce, did they tell you

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 18/01/2020 20:59

because I really don't understand the amount of vitriol levelled at them. I really don't get what either of them are supposed to have done wrong.

It’s not what either of them have done. It’s who one of them is. Now people will trip over themselves to tell you it’s nothing to do with race, but......

Bettercallsaul1 · 18/01/2020 21:00

It is a lovely statement from the Queen. I just wish she (or other members of the RF) had made a statement of support for the couple much earlier, in an attempt to counteract the unmitigated torrent of vitriol poured on them by the tabloid press. They were left unsupported to the tender mercies of the Daily Mail et al.

NoooorthonerMum · 18/01/2020 21:06

They don't want their royal titles, and their independently wealthy. If he's not a serving member of the royal family he's free to earn his own money. Good for H & M.

This.

IdaBWells · 18/01/2020 21:06

This is clear PR from professionals who are carefully spinning the story to show the Crown as in control. By M and H coming back to do a few final Royal Engagements before Megxit it saves face and lets there be an official “goodbye” so everyone has closure.

LadyBrienne · 18/01/2020 21:07

pretty much just going to live a life like the other grandchildren of the queen (Zara, Peter, etc) with the exception of William

Iggly · 18/01/2020 21:08

Literally failing to understand why people continue to get so worked about this.

I’m more worked up about having a royal family in the first place.

econowifey · 18/01/2020 21:10

I do

morrisseysquif · 18/01/2020 21:11

I don't like them in the same way I don't like any of the monarchy or the titled classes, it is what they represent.

They did strike me as being hypocritical though, taking advantage of the perks with the big hollywood wedding and the millions spent on the house but not wishing to sing for their supper.

IdaBWells · 18/01/2020 21:11

They (the Crown) are tying up lose ends and anticipating criticism so stating that the Sussexes and Archie are loved members of the family and that Meghan had successfully transitioned into the RF, whether this is true or not behind the scenes. Carefully bringing everything into line with some clear boundaries.

Mainly: they no longer represent the Queen.

I wonder if Eugenie and Beatrix will be asked to do more minor activities to share the burden? The Wessexes and Anne already do a large amount of engagements.

IdaBWells · 18/01/2020 21:12
  • typo Beatrice not Beatrix.
AutumnRose1 · 18/01/2020 21:13

“ I wonder if they were planning for this all along”

Yes. I think MM rescued Harry which even I, cynical old git, think Is v romantic.

IdaBWells · 18/01/2020 21:15

By not discussing security there is the implication that taxpayers in the U.K. and Canada are once again on the hook. Huge number up to 7m a year are being thrown around due to having at least two locations and lots of travel.

portico · 18/01/2020 21:16

Good riddance to both of them. Since they’re going to monetise their brand I do hope that the state no longer has to pay for their se unity detail.

^ this in spades but I would add the tender mercies of online bitching and making things up as well, I saw a post saying the Duchess was a "yacht girl" on a different thread Biscuit how low people will stoop to get their pound of flesh eh!

portico · 18/01/2020 21:18

Typo - meant to say ‘Security detail’

SleepingStandingUp · 18/01/2020 21:19

They are absolutely going to divorce if things don't work out well isn't it stand for people to get a divorce if it doesn't work out? Why would we want them locked into an unhappy marriage with a couple of kdis stuck in the middle?
