Harry and Meghan Resigning (Act 6 Scene 2) Is Everyone Okay?

This is Thread Eight in a series which I did not imagine would last more than one.

Meghan's friends are now writing on social media that she has been fortunate to "escape the clutches" of the Royal Family.

We, who care enough for the Queen that we are appalled by Meghan's blatant disrespect for the Crown (and the family which embraced her) are still reeling as we go from revelation to revelation. This bizarre and unprecedented situation has unfolded over a period of just eight days.

We are now beginning to see what Meghan's likely agenda was. It seems that abandoning the UK was her plan even prior to the wedding - a wedding which cost the British people £20,000,000.

Not many people actually begrudged paying that £20,000,000. But some were prescient enough to say that the marriage would not last and that Meghan would abandon this country once she had a child.

She has. She has fulfilled those prognostications amply.

It was just rather...quicker than perhaps we had imagined...…. and a good deal more brutal. Cries of "racism" have abounded - cries which are simply not justified.

What will happen next? Meghan has gone to Canada, a country which does not seem particularly keen to foot the huge bill for security which her presence requires. She is dropping in on charities for disadvantaged women, almost unannounced, without the backing or knowledge of Buckingham Palace. It is cringeworthy and embarrassing in the extreme.

Prince Harry seems to be lost in the maelstrom of public opinion. What will happen next? Will Meghan announce a second pregnancy?

And is the RF okay?

I think about Diana's late night visits to hospitals which were known about but not widely reported on or photographed. And AIDs patients she had spent time with and the famous "handshake" with the dying AIDs patient at the Middlesex hospital in 1987 wasn't setup because the staff didn't know in advance if Diana would arrive wearing gloves or not. She didn't.

Different era before social media and everyone having camera phones though.

StubbleTurnips · 17/01/2020 14:17

Just a question to the Canadians that have added to the thread, I’ve always assumed that it’s bloody freezing / snowing at this point in the year all the time..... It was snowing in the pics of MM and the plane thing I think. Today at the airport nothing, like a gorgeous spring day. Does the weather change that quickly like here?

Wheresthebeach · 17/01/2020 14:20

West coast, Vancouver, very British weather. I had family out there and as I child they would phone and talk about going for a Christmas Day walk, no snow. I was in Toronto - typically 3 feet of snow and -30! So depends on where you are. Alberta - weather can change dramatically on a daily basis depending on wind direction.

KayakingOnDown · 17/01/2020 14:20

I’m also intrigued by the sudden tabloid pics of MM, what’s that all about? Do they call the paps

In each of them Meghan looks directly at the camera and smiles. Whereas most celebs, when they don't want to actually be papped, wear sunglasses and avoid looking near cameras, she takes her sunglasses off today so they get a better shot.

She did not want more privacy. She wanted more publicity. But in a celeb style, not boring royal rota style.

MarySidney · 17/01/2020 14:22

Meghan has made her choice, and I daresay she will be ok. But I worry that Harry will come to regret it. "Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of his life."

And while no doubt HM and PC will always leave the door open for him to come home and live quietly somewhere in the UK, his child(ren) by then would be domiciled elsewhere, and he'd be separated from them.

I think he's screwed, one way or another, whatever he does.

None of us know the colour of anyone else posting on here. And I doubt we care. When you are calling someone a racist you are making a LOT of assumptions about their gender, colour, lifestyle etc.

I posted earlier about the ridiculousness nature of calling someone a racist or transphobic merely because they don't agree with you or vote a different way or look a certain way. Lawrence Fox made a good point on Question Time that you can't assume that because someone is white, male and privileged that they are by definition a racist. He can't change WHAT he is.

For example, I could say something about Meghan's hair looking messy and you could turn round and say, "That's a very racist thing to say. You need to understand that Meghan is mixed race and as such her hair care requirements are much more complex than the majority of the population." How do you know that I don't absolutely understand because I am possibly mixed race myself but still think it looks messy? You don't. I am entitled to that opinion. In any case, Meghan has a hairdresser on more or less permanent call which most of us could only dream of. So if she, with all the assistance at her disposal, could still contrive to pitch up at her own wedding with slightly messy hair, we are entitled to comment. If she didn't want us commenting on her hair, she ought to have reconsidered a £20m public wedding on national TV.

queenofarles · 17/01/2020 14:26

Why do you care?
I think you are missing the point here, it’s the we don’t won’t you but we still want you to pay for us, attitude ,

Very cleaver wording on their behalf saying they don’t want any grants , because it’s comes from the people’s taxes, but you must still carry on paying for our protection and PA Charles must still keep funding our lifestyle. Incredibly Cheeky!

Plus branding the whole nation racist close minded .

You will find lots of people do care, people who feel sorry for the Queen , people who feel sorry for Charles, my dad one of them! He thinks it’s really bad they way H&M treated him. People who don’t like the way the UK is portrayed. The money that will still be paid for them although they both despise the country and the people.

It’s not just one couple cutting ties with their family it’s so much more.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 17/01/2020 14:27

I'm black and I don't see the hair references as racist, and didn't yesterday.

However as a pp just said, references to untidy hair in the context of POC can be racist at times but this (for me) is dependent on two variables:

  1. The context in which the remark is made

2 (and most importantly) the intention

I have not personally seen any comments on these threads I would describe as racist. And no matter how low my opinion of MM is, I would always (and have quite a few times before) contest vigorously any remarks I thought were racist.

Anyway I can only speak for myself, but I'm sure there are other POC on these threads.

Now back to the hair. I do realise that a lot of people who are not POC do not realise that our hair needs careful handling. It is very tightly curled and often there's nothing you can do to get it to 'lie flat' completely. Longer hairs can be managed in a bun more easily, but shorter growth tends to go AWOL. Ordinary gels etc don't work for everyone. That is why there is often a specific range of black hair products.

For some people, attempting to get our hair to conform to extreme 'tidyness' can end up damaging it in the long term. This is why a lot of Models who are POC wear hair extensions. It protects their own hair.

I think (maybe) MM processes her hair but only enough to get it to the style she likes. To get it to be tidy in the way people expect caucasian hair to be, would likely require she process it quite hard. I personally think her hair is great and like a more natural look.

Anyway. That's my two cents.

I'm in the restaurant eating trash, it's going to make my heart burn worse, and I'm not going to be ok.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/01/2020 14:29

Peppermint tea should help there.

NumbersStation · 17/01/2020 14:29

Indeed @fallen121

I’m still smarting at them using the Stone Roses.

They’d have been better served with another redhead’s song. ‘Look at me’

Even more bloody fitting.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/01/2020 14:30

What was the song?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 17/01/2020 14:36

I'm going to order some peppermint tea right now.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 17/01/2020 14:38

I didn’t appear on the last thread & just appeared now. But don’t worry everyone I’m ok (very much ok & been out with friends 2 days in a row).

I’ve not seen photos of MM today but I reckon she knows exactly what’s she doing. Whether Harry realises that is anyone’s guess.

BackyardChickens · 17/01/2020 14:38

Do you think we will be getting a statement today?

Mummabear2212 · 17/01/2020 14:41

I've followed all these threads and only delurking to say that I am not ok. DS 2 is ill so we're staying in, watching In the Night Garden over and over again. I'm definitely NOT ok Wine

fallen121 · 17/01/2020 14:41

I still haven't had any lunch and wondering what to have because there really isn't anything in the house and I can't be bothered to go.

We have fruit. We have lots of fruit. My DH spent £19 on fruit in Tesco yesterday. But I have eaten blackberries an apple and a banana already and I really cannot face anymore.

Peppermint tea would be nice!

GoFiguire · 17/01/2020 14:41

Has anyone asked Piers Morgan if he’s OK?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 17/01/2020 14:42

They only have Ginger tea. Feeling not ok again.

Have they wrapped things up enough for a statement to be made?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 17/01/2020 14:43

I think it's obvious that Piers is not OK. Mind you @fallen121 could send him an email and ask....

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 17/01/2020 14:44

@StubbleTurnips most people don’t appreciate just how big Canada is. It’s a massive landmass. Vancouver is on the Pacific coast of BC, so as the PP said, the humidity level is much higher and they have a climate very similar to the UK. Whilst the mountains get lots of snow, the cities don’t and they don’t have the infrastructure and many don’t have winter tires.

I’m in Northern Alberta, which is the next province heading East. It doesn’t look very far on the map but it’s a 16 hour drive. We usually have snow on the ground from October to March and consistently low temperatures. Everyone switches to winter tires and we have a massive arsenal of plows etc. Schools don’t close for snow days.

We don’t get the ridiculous amounts of snowfall, like in the mountains or over in the Eastern Provinces. Some places over there get 15-20 feet of snow each winter.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 17/01/2020 14:45

It’s a 16 hour drive from here to Vancouver.

SeperatedSwans · 17/01/2020 14:48

Hi all ☺️ I haven't much to add just dropping in, to follow. Will catch up now and report back my findings.

AcrossthePond55 · 17/01/2020 14:49

FWIW a US citizen can accept a title, we just can't accept it in return for political 'favours' or use it 'officially' as a representative of the US Government, nor can we expect any associated 'privileges' when in the US. There have been US citizens who have been knighted. They just can't call themselves Sir or Dame.

So MM can call herself the DoS in the US all she likes, but she can't expect us to curtsey to her or accord her any 'privileges' because of it.

Interestingly enough, if PH were to become a US citizen, he would have to renounce his titles.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 17/01/2020 14:49

I fancy a fruit crumble now with Fallen's
talk of fruit.

BackyardChickens · 17/01/2020 14:50

No more Royal clothes, she’s wearing clothes from her acting days now...
