Previous thread

-Today Prince Harry is doing the draw for the Rugby League. (Not sure if it’s a public location but there’s bound to be a lot of press interest)

  • He has said he is going to stay in the UK for a bit longer to thrash out the details of “Megxit”
  • Meghan has been on a second surprise visit in Vancouver
  • Opinion coming out of Canada is that; not only do they not want to fund the Sussexes; having a member of the a Royal Family make Canada their permanent home is not acceptable.

what engagement ring debacle?

According to any number of newspapers, the original engagement ring has been designed by Harry and featured a large diamond from Botswana (a link to his favourite country in Africa) with two side diamonds taken from Diana's personal collection. That indicates some thought and a great deal of sentimental value had gone into it.

About a year later, MM "upgraded" it to one "more to her taste" - lots more diamonds.

GoFiguire · 16/01/2020 16:46

Well, I’m OK now that someone has asked me if I’m OK. So thank you for that. Not many people have.

Does anyone else think that the “not surviving but thriving” thing is similar to the “not waving but drowning” line by Stevie Smith?

VeryLittleOwl · 16/01/2020 16:47

The US reaction to Megxit has been gobsmacking. They truly believe Meghan has been freed from tyranny. Like it’s the sequel to Ten Years a Slave. Only in Meghan’s case it was about 18 months.

I know. The irony is we have an actual princess taking refuge from tyranny in London at the moment (Princess Haya bint al-Hussein, who has left the Sultan of Brunei and taken her kids to London, requesting a forced marriage protection order for her daughter).

VeryLittleOwl · 16/01/2020 16:47

Dubai, not Brunei!

Oh blimey. She really didn’t and doesn’t get it.

MurrayTheMonk · 16/01/2020 16:50

I'm sure the RF do find some of their engagements boring as hell. Kate was talking about crocheting yesterday in Bradford. Hardly the most interesting thing to most people....But there are bits of all jobs that are boring. Most of us, and most of the senior royals, just suck those up as part of work and the pay off for a) the bits we like more and b) the remuneration we receive.

The rest of the senior RF don't just pick the bits they are interested in (Sentebale and Invictus I assume for Hazzer) and ditch the rest. Because they recognise that's their bread and butter.

The80sweregreat · 16/01/2020 16:51

I am angry that she felt a 'prisoner ' ; maybe they are at times as they need protection but that is the job and it is for them too : their safety.

She couldn't just go out when she felt like it ; it must be hard to get used to but she didn't really give it a good go. They can have down time and time away ; it's just not all the time!
If she really felt that stifled it's probably better to just do what she's done but not bother coming back now! Who would want her to come home here feeling like this?

BrotherlyLove · 16/01/2020 16:52

Over thinking it or another 2 fingers up with the lyrics "I'd like to leave the country for a month of Sundays" in the latest Sussex video?

SingingLily · 16/01/2020 16:53

Oh blimey. She really didn’t and doesn’t get it.

That's what makes me think she's a bit lacking in the empathy department. If bling was so important to her but she had at least some care for what Harry had designed for her, she could have had an eternity ring identical to the "upgraded" engagement ring and no one would have batted an eye.

I speak as someone whose sister is a ferocious social climber and has "upgraded" her engagement ring twice to reflect her rise through the ranks of the wealthy and well-connected.

It's not classy.

KayakingOnDown · 16/01/2020 16:54

Just wondering ....if MM was “obsessed” with Princess Diana ( as has been claimed ) how come during her engagement interview she said she didn’t know anything about Harry when she met him ??

She lied. There are multiple reports of her being obsessed with Diana as a child, of watching both the funeral and the wedding, and reading books about Diana including Andrew Morton's The true story. There was a photo of her Toronto apartment posted on her blog which showed the book on her bookshelf.

I thought she looked a bit miffed in the engagement interview when Harry said he'd never heard of her or of Suits, and reciprocated in kind. But that's just my personal opinion.

MurrayTheMonk · 16/01/2020 16:54

I'd forgotten the engagement ring thing. Didn't Harry actually design the original himself? I can't imagine having that conversation - 'thanks for the highly personal and expensive ring you gave me, but I'm just going to add some bits to it so I like it more'.
My Dp gave me an awful necklace for my birthday. I genuinely hate it. I'm wearing the bloody thing right now as I know it would upset him if I never wore it. I value the thought, if not the (hideous) thing itself.

Alsohuman · 16/01/2020 16:56

It’s making me quite cross that there’s now a view that Harry doesn’t enjoy any aspect of Royal life and doesn’t care about any of his charities. You don’t put yourself through a gruelling expedition to the South Pole for something you’re not bothered about. The Army meant the world to him and I believe he cares passionately about the veterans’ charities he supports. Ffs give the guy some credit.

eminencegrise · 16/01/2020 16:57

The US reaction to Megxit has been gobsmacking. They truly believe Meghan has been freed from tyranny.

To be fair, there are over 350m Americans, and I'd reckon the vast majority of them don't know who she is, much less give a fuck, as long as they don't have to pay for her. A good many of them that I know personally, however, think she's a . . . well, it's not really favourable.

KayakingOnDown · 16/01/2020 16:57

Over thinking it or another 2 fingers up with the lyrics "I'd like to leave the country for a month of Sundays" in the latest Sussex video?

Don't know but a lot of this has been a clear 2 fingers up to Britain. It's appalling.

The80sweregreat · 16/01/2020 16:58

I lost my ( very cheap) engagement ring years ago , but then I hate Jewellery of any sort. I'd be a terrible Royal as all the things they like I don't much at all!

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 16/01/2020 16:58

I thought she just had the band altered and slightly blinged up, although I thought even that was Hmm But did she really have more diamonds added?

Or am I getting the engagement ring confused with the wedding ring?

GlitchStitch · 16/01/2020 16:59

Does anyone else think that the “not surviving but thriving” thing is similar to the “not waving but drowning” line by Stevie Smith?

I thought she stole it from Maya Angelou-

"My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style."

KayakingOnDown · 16/01/2020 17:00

It’s making me quite cross that there’s now a view that Harry doesn’t enjoy any aspect of Royal life and doesn’t care about any of his charities

I think Harry cares about his charities actually. I think he wanted to help make the world a better place and thought Meghan would be a perfect partner in this. It's what they first 'bonded over' and discussed on their very first date, apparently. But she was just saying stuff to impress him and get a second date. She'd done her research and learned her lines. She was playing him like a fool and still is.

Parker231 · 16/01/2020 17:01

What evidence do you have of this?

SingingLily · 16/01/2020 17:02

I'm wearing the bloody thing right now

Murray, for several winters, my DH lovingly presented me with a travelling mug of hot chocolate (white chocolate at that, with - eek! - added sugar) when I was just about to set off on my hour-long drive to work.

Hate the stuff but I couldn't bring myself to tell him.

Anyway, are you OK? Despite the necklace?

OVienna · 16/01/2020 17:02

Engagement ring story is incredible. That is too tacky for words. I havent heard any of this stuff before. I fund myself struggling to believe it's true but then it does seem to be. How can that not be seen as hurtful?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 16/01/2020 17:03

I also thought it was a Maya Angelou quote.

Thought she was channeling Diana a bit as well, Bashir interview:

Diana: ......anything good I ever did nobody ever said a thing, never said, `'well done', or 'was it OK?'

The80sweregreat · 16/01/2020 17:03

I don't doubt that P Harry did enjoy aspects of his life ( of course he did)!but this stepping down has made people think that he really didn't want to do any of it. That's all.
A lot of people feel sad it's come to this I suppose. I suppose his brother feels his lost his wing man too.

BrotherlyLove · 16/01/2020 17:04

@KayakingOnDown Yes indeed, but I did think to myself, surely they can't be so blatantly insulting?
