I know that. Harley's becomes king etc but what happens to the others? Will they be left money/homes/? Do they inherit anything? Is the queen allowed to leave them royal 'stuff'?

Might be a bit random but I just thought of it Grin

I thought Wills became King Confused

GimmeeMoore · 13/01/2017 20:56

I'll dive into a box set or Netflix to avoid all the sycophantic ma'am crawly tv coverage

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/01/2017 20:57

Why did you think the Queen's grandson would become King rather than her son Confused ?

nancy75 · 13/01/2017 20:58

I think tradition is the coronation is always a year after the previous ones death.
Wasn't it when the queen mum died one of them got in trouble for wearing the wrong tie?

nancy75 · 13/01/2017 20:58

There will definitely be school closures & days off work

Thanks for the article backinthebox. An interesting read. Hard to believe how much her death will impact on the country in wars you wouldn't even think about.

Manumission · 13/01/2017 21:02

They don't have many names to choose from when they name a royal baby in the direct line of succession do they? Prince George could only really have been Henry, Charles, James, George or a couple of other possibles. Diana apparently met a lot of resistance over the name William.

It only just struck me today reading an obituary or Lord Snowdon how very odd it was that he and PM named their son David given the history of that name in the previous generation.

Latenightreader · 13/01/2017 21:02

Someone asked if the money would all have to be changed - no, but the next batch would have Charles on it. When we had the old 10ps and 5ps it wasn't uncommon to have an old shilling/two shilling piece with George VI on it. Mum said she used to get 1ds with Victoria on them sometimes pre decimalisation.

Quite a lot of people seem convinced the money will stop being legal - several of them in my local!

PuppetInParadize · 13/01/2017 21:02

Several days or hours of sombre music on BBC. I asked DH about this recently - but have forgotten what he told me.

Lots of long threads on MN and other social medya.

Lots of speculation. re- everything related and not related.

A new national anthem for me to refuse to sing in public.

It'll be a hoot.

TheWoodlander · 13/01/2017 21:02

It's strange when you think of it - how stable and long-lived we are now. We have 4 generations of Royals alive - monarch plus 3 generations of heirs to the throne.

A few hundred years ago, the monarch would struggle to get an heir to teenage years before they died, either in battle or of the sweating fever.

DanGleballs · 13/01/2017 21:03

Apparently they practice the funeral through London at night. Allegedly the Queen Mother was most put out that they used the plans for her funeral when Diana died.

Charles will become George VII, William will become Prince of Wales. We will have at least one extra bank holiday, probably more.

Sandringham and Balmoral are the personal property of the Queen and will pass to Charles. We will never know what the Queen left her other children as her Will is unlikely to be released for public view, like the Queen Mother's.

The country will mourn a lady who put duty before her personal interests at all times. Whatever people think of the monarchy, the Queen has served her country faithfully at the expense of her own happiness and at the expense of her relationship with her own children. She has never embarrassed the country or done anything against the national interest.

Badgoushk · 13/01/2017 21:03

I think it would be more weird for the public for Charles to become George, than to have the 'bad' association of previous Charleses.

Mynestisfullofempty · 13/01/2017 21:04

Unicorn1981 "I thought Wills became King"

Why do you think Charles wouldn't become king?

engineersthumb · 13/01/2017 21:05

They bury herSmile

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/01/2017 21:05

Ah, yes, Queen Mum. I do remember that news interruption (was listening to R4 in the late afternoon iirc).

The other day ITV lunchtime news happened to be on the tv and my attention was caught when Alistair Stewart said "and we're interrupting this programme to bring you breaking news ...". I thought it must be HRH or the Duke of Ed or some other royal or Prime Minister. But no! Graham Taylor! warranted a news interruption. How very strange.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 13/01/2017 21:08

There are also extensive plans for what will happen if the Queen dies in Scotland - her body will lie in state at Holyrood for a while, in that case, and then I think she will be taken back to England for the full funeral.

Lunar1 · 13/01/2017 21:09

Will her estate have to pay inheritance tax?

Libbyblue · 13/01/2017 21:11

No comedy on the BBC for a few days either

The news people rehearse for the queen dying. They have somber clothes ready

FondantNancy · 13/01/2017 21:12

Like her father, HRM will be embalmed and put on display in Buckingham Palace for three days, if you queue up early enough you'll be able to go and see her and kiss the glass case she'll be enclosed in.

As her subjects we'll all have to wear black for a month, BUT the good news is we're all in her will. We all get about 32p.

GimmeeMoore · 13/01/2017 21:12
