OMG my visitor cat was actually a stray cat and is going to become officially mine - I have questions! And he needs a name

I've had what I first thought was a visitor cat for quite some time. Beautiful little tabby boy, very bold and entrepenurial - would come in to sleep during the day (I have a ground floor flat and windows and doors often often). I just thought he lived with a family who put him out during the day. He was always keen to take himself off at the end of the day. More latterly I'd tried a paper collar, asking around and a post to the local facebook group. Got nothing from any of that.

To cut a long story short, the cat looked ill last week - I found him on a deckchair on my patio looking very poorly - and after a couple of days of monitoring, I took him to my local vet. They scanned for a chip and there was an owner. I felt really, really sad but also pleased for him.

However. The owner on the chip had apparently "given him away." It took a few days for that owner to contact the current owner, who, I quote, "hasn't seem him in months and doesn't want him." (Can I just say here that this cat is approx 4 years old and not neutered, which makes me a little judgy of these owners.)

So the vet's practice have rung and asked if I want the cat. I do, and I'm picking him up later, but my mind is reeling a bit.

I didn't mind the cat going off god knows where overnight when I thought he had somewhere to go, but I now think he's just been out-out. I guess neutering may help a bit with his range and I'll get that done shortly.

On the days he was poorly last week he still went off at night but I left a patio door open slightly for him and he seemed to come in, in the early hours. It's not safe for me to have that door open - it's literally a patio door to my ground floor bedroom - so I either have to keep him inside overnight (he'd hate it) or get a cat flap put in the patio door. (I think there was a useful thread about this kind of thing recently).

I don't think he's ever used a little tray - he just had the ability to sleep for nine hours with a bladder of steel and then I assume go when he goes outside. I would LOVE not to have a litter tray in the flat and wonder if we can just continue with this system. I guess some of this will work itself out.

I wonder if there's anyway I can reinforce that this will now be his permanent home? (I have bought lik-e-lix!) He's been living at the vets for a week and apparently hating it.

He also needs a name. I've just been calling him "the little cat." The previous owner apparently called him Shrieky, which absolutely isn't right.

Cat tax follows.

Congratulations on being chosen by the Cat Distribution System.

I recommend a human name - maybe Derek or Clive?

ImWearingPantaloons · 18/06/2026 12:46

Can the vet sort jabs and neutering out before you bring him home?

HighHeelsRedLips · 18/06/2026 12:47

We need a photo OP 😻
They say cats choose their owners and I’m glad he chose you as you sound like a lovely person with a good heart.

Silverbirchleaf · 18/06/2026 12:48

We can’t name him without a photo! Thems the rules.

BillieWiper · 18/06/2026 12:48

Hell not use a tray, he craps outside. Get a cat flap if you can but there's no guarantee he'll use it.

Just let him be free roaming as that's what he's used to. But obviously once you're feeding and giving him attention he'll keep coming back. He could well prefer to spend the night out. Most cats I know do in summer.

But he definitely needs neutering. It will kerb fighting, yowling etc even if it's done at 4 yrs.

You're a great person for taking him in and I'm sure he'll be very happy with you. But he'll still be a very independent fellow if he had to fend for himself for a while.

Ha. Those were my 2 kids in utero names. Both turned out to be girls.

WHERE IS THE GODDAMNED CAT TAX? 😁
You are so lucky to be chosen. I have a cat flap in my glass door. I got a double glazing company to put it in for me.
I think it sounds like he will be very happy to pee outdoors. I have a litter tray for my cats because the old lady next door doesn't want or need to be clearing up cat poo - she is 90. My two use it all the time and come back in to use it.
I'll bet he will soon be as happy as Larry which is also a good name and the name of our no 10 cat too.

Mikopink · 18/06/2026 12:50

Congratulations! He sounds like a robust and polite cat. Maybe he hasn’t bonded much with humans yet? The lick e things will hopefully consolidate that he’s yours, in his mind! Gimcat pastes are great for cats too and they love them.

looking forward to seeing a pic, will be the inspiration for name suggestions!

Gettingbysomehow · 18/06/2026 12:50

Just seen the cat tax - sorry 😍

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 18/06/2026 12:51

Congratulations on being chosen. It sounds like he's already moved in, just keep the food and fuss coming and he will stay where his bread is buttered.

I would get him neutered ASAP. It'll greatly reduce his chance of injuries and will probably lead to him staying home more.

You could also get him tested for FIV but there's no realistic treatment and it might lead to outdated advice about trapping him indoors and never letting him near another cat.

FallenNight · 18/06/2026 12:52

He looks like an Archibald to me.

Congratulations.

Mikopink · 18/06/2026 12:52

Oh he’s truly gorgeous. Could his name be Jeremy?

AlphaApple · 18/06/2026 12:53

He’s beautiful. You have done a lovely thing.

I think he looks like a Marco.

BloodyHellBob · 18/06/2026 12:53

Oh my word, he’s a handsome boy! I think he looks like a Hector!

He's lovely! Looks like a Ziggy to me.

Motnight · 18/06/2026 12:56

He definitely needs Jeremy as his first name! What about his middle name? And surname?

He looks gorgeous!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 18/06/2026 12:56

Arthur.

He looks like an Arthur to me.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 18/06/2026 12:57

He looks like a Silus to me

Favouritefruits · 18/06/2026 12:57

We found it was much cheaper to have a cat flap put in the window rather than the patio doors. Have you bought him some lovely food? You might need a litter tray for a short burst so when he’s been neutered and needs to stay in. Enjoy your new lovely cat! He looks like he should have a gentleman’s name, he looks posh!

TiredCatLady · 18/06/2026 13:00

The Cat Distribution System strikes again! Most wonderful OP.

For some reason, I feel like he’s a Dave.

relaxitsok · 18/06/2026 13:00

Aw how lovely for you both. Stanley/Stan.
