OMG my visitor cat was actually a stray cat and is going to become officially mine - I have questions! And he needs a name

I've had what I first thought was a visitor cat for quite some time. Beautiful little tabby boy, very bold and entrepenurial - would come in to sleep during the day (I have a ground floor flat and windows and doors often often). I just thought he lived with a family who put him out during the day. He was always keen to take himself off at the end of the day. More latterly I'd tried a paper collar, asking around and a post to the local facebook group. Got nothing from any of that.

To cut a long story short, the cat looked ill last week - I found him on a deckchair on my patio looking very poorly - and after a couple of days of monitoring, I took him to my local vet. They scanned for a chip and there was an owner. I felt really, really sad but also pleased for him.

However. The owner on the chip had apparently "given him away." It took a few days for that owner to contact the current owner, who, I quote, "hasn't seem him in months and doesn't want him." (Can I just say here that this cat is approx 4 years old and not neutered, which makes me a little judgy of these owners.)

So the vet's practice have rung and asked if I want the cat. I do, and I'm picking him up later, but my mind is reeling a bit.

I didn't mind the cat going off god knows where overnight when I thought he had somewhere to go, but I now think he's just been out-out. I guess neutering may help a bit with his range and I'll get that done shortly.

On the days he was poorly last week he still went off at night but I left a patio door open slightly for him and he seemed to come in, in the early hours. It's not safe for me to have that door open - it's literally a patio door to my ground floor bedroom - so I either have to keep him inside overnight (he'd hate it) or get a cat flap put in the patio door. (I think there was a useful thread about this kind of thing recently).

I don't think he's ever used a little tray - he just had the ability to sleep for nine hours with a bladder of steel and then I assume go when he goes outside. I would LOVE not to have a litter tray in the flat and wonder if we can just continue with this system. I guess some of this will work itself out.

I wonder if there's anyway I can reinforce that this will now be his permanent home? (I have bought lik-e-lix!) He's been living at the vets for a week and apparently hating it.

He also needs a name. I've just been calling him "the little cat." The previous owner apparently called him Shrieky, which absolutely isn't right.

Cat tax follows.

He is gorgeous and looks like a Charles to me, but that seems a bit too plain. Then I thought maybe bartholomew, leaning heavily into the "mew" cat pun of his name.

Peachbubble · 18/06/2026 13:30

He's a gorgeous boy! And very lucky to adopt you, you are the chosen one!

Definitely go with a Christie name if you're a fan:
Hastings
Poirot (Purroit?)
Hercule

Otherwise, he looks like a Dave.

Tonissister · 18/06/2026 13:31

How about Harley? I recently read all of Agatha Christie's Harley Quinn short stories.

Though I do love the suggestion Captain Arthur Hastings - Arthur or Artie for short.

IdiotCat · 18/06/2026 13:31

Dion - as he is The Wanderer 😸
Other than that, Gary or Prince Stripy Trousers D’Whiskers - The First of His Name.

Our rescue cat refused to use a litter tray and can hold on to his doings for hours, so maybe once he’s in a routine you can do without a litter tray.

enjoy the companionship x

PersonOnTheInside · 18/06/2026 13:31

He has chosen his home 😻 When you choose his name don't forget to try it out first... eg shouting it out into the garden - it may not be as appealing then 😹

He's been smart enough to survive since being abandoned so will probably be smart enough to figure out a cat flap... with encouragement and treats placed either side!

Re the litter tray - cats really do seem to be programmed to use them IME, so even if he still goes out daily to do his stuff, you have the option to keep him in if necessary.

Would definitely recommend getting a microchip cat flap which can be set to different access options - so he can either come and go without restriction or it can be set if needed on a particular occasion to out only or in only.

we have one through a double glazed patio door, although the hole was cut into the glass before the door was fitted. But they can be fitted retrospectively.

Good luck!

I feel he is Colin.

MiddleAgedDread · 18/06/2026 13:32

He's a Dave

AInightingale · 18/06/2026 13:32

Looks like a Reggie to me.
It's midsummer (though the weather hasn't got the memo) and my own cats are very keen on going out at night (sometimes bringing back a dead mouse). It is the same every year.do Do you have a very small kitchen window you could leave open? I have a four year old tom who is neutered but he will still slip out at night at every opportunity, so you may be stuck with that until the cooler weather comes.

Monty36 · 18/06/2026 13:32

Cat flap definitely. A tray won’t hurt.
He is absolutely gorgeous.

Piglet89 · 18/06/2026 13:33

What about Bernard?

Walker1178 · 18/06/2026 13:34

I’d go with Enzo - it means ruler of the house

Happyjoe · 18/06/2026 13:34

Oh, that's lovely! Well done in adopting, wonderful. You may find once had the snip that he wants to stay in more too, the drive to mate will wane and you're going to have him around more.

Name, my other half has always wanted Ralph for a cat. I like Ralph too, and other human names such as Dave, Dave is awesome for animals. My old neighbours had a large cat called Behemoth, suited the huge fluff ball he was too.

From your username, could he be a Hercule?

Oh excellent idea or perhaps other detective names. Morse, Maigret or Montalbano or Zen. Congratulations @largeprintagathachristie on being adopted by such a lovely boy.

MindfulSis · 18/06/2026 13:36

I think he looks like a Bruce 😂

fartotheleftside · 18/06/2026 13:39

Cats should always have access to an indoor tray, even if they usually go outside.

the usually advice is to keep them indoors for a few weeks at least when getting used to a new home, it stops them getting lost.

if he’s been sick he should be kept indoors anyway?

and if he doesn’t have his vaccinations, you can’t let him outside.

a litter tray is fine, just scoop when needed and clean every couple of weeks!

SinuousTendrils · 18/06/2026 13:39

He's a real beauty, how wonderful to have been adopted by him 🥰 and that he gets to have a happy ending.
We have three. They sleep indoors on our beds then are let out during the day and come and go as they please with covered comfy outdoor areas for snoozing when we're not in. We have a litter tray but it's seldom used.
Get shares in Dreamies.
Some great names suggested; I think Raymond, Hector or Bernard might suit.

I love him ❤️

ReflectingPool · 18/06/2026 13:40

He looks just like my first childhood cat, and he was called Tobias. Toby for short, obvs.

Shodan · 18/06/2026 13:40

Oh he's beautiful. He looks just like my boy Gizmo, who sadly was pts a few months ago at the age of 19 and a half.

I quite like Toby as a name. Or as a pp suggested, Jeremy.

MrsVBS · 18/06/2026 13:40

My cat and my previous one are/were night owls. In the house sleeping all day and would go out all night, I keep a litter tray in the utility room but it’s never used just keep it there in case. Congratulations on your new cat! 🐈

ToadRage · 18/06/2026 13:42

My tabby baby was called Max, he was almost Oscar but i settled on Max, next door have two tabbys called Jax and East. Wait till you get him home and try a few names and see what suits him. I would definitely get a cat flap if he is used to roaming. He can come and go as he pleases and you don't have to compromise your security for him. If you want him in overnight for his own safety you can get ones that lock. We had one that had 'in only' and 'out only' and fully locked options we would put it on 'in only' at about 6pm then when both cats were home safe we would lock it.

ThatAquaRobin · 18/06/2026 13:43

Slim shady

MadMunchkin · 18/06/2026 13:43

I have Optimus, found in similar circumstances. It's taken 6 months for my own cats to tolerate him and he want to come inside for a comfortable sleep.

I got him neutered and his temperament has definitely improved from street cat to homeboy.
So rewarding to see the change and give them a chance of a better life. ❤️

Sasha07 · 18/06/2026 13:44

I'm a nerd so went to Google cat names with the meaning 'night wanderer' 🤣

Asra: An Arabic name explicitly meaning "nocturnal journey" or "travel at night".

Wendell: A traditional German name meaning "wanderer" or "rover", great for a nocturnal tomcat.

But Little Cat is an option. We brought in a stray and kept her called 'Kitten,' for 10 years!

youngwhippersnapper · 18/06/2026 13:45

How exciting for you.
And how wonderful for him to have someone to love him at last.
I had a cat who looked just like him and his name was Tigger.
