OMG my visitor cat was actually a stray cat and is going to become officially mine - I have questions! And he needs a name

I've had what I first thought was a visitor cat for quite some time. Beautiful little tabby boy, very bold and entrepenurial - would come in to sleep during the day (I have a ground floor flat and windows and doors often often). I just thought he lived with a family who put him out during the day. He was always keen to take himself off at the end of the day. More latterly I'd tried a paper collar, asking around and a post to the local facebook group. Got nothing from any of that.

To cut a long story short, the cat looked ill last week - I found him on a deckchair on my patio looking very poorly - and after a couple of days of monitoring, I took him to my local vet. They scanned for a chip and there was an owner. I felt really, really sad but also pleased for him.

However. The owner on the chip had apparently "given him away." It took a few days for that owner to contact the current owner, who, I quote, "hasn't seem him in months and doesn't want him." (Can I just say here that this cat is approx 4 years old and not neutered, which makes me a little judgy of these owners.)

So the vet's practice have rung and asked if I want the cat. I do, and I'm picking him up later, but my mind is reeling a bit.

I didn't mind the cat going off god knows where overnight when I thought he had somewhere to go, but I now think he's just been out-out. I guess neutering may help a bit with his range and I'll get that done shortly.

On the days he was poorly last week he still went off at night but I left a patio door open slightly for him and he seemed to come in, in the early hours. It's not safe for me to have that door open - it's literally a patio door to my ground floor bedroom - so I either have to keep him inside overnight (he'd hate it) or get a cat flap put in the patio door. (I think there was a useful thread about this kind of thing recently).

I don't think he's ever used a little tray - he just had the ability to sleep for nine hours with a bladder of steel and then I assume go when he goes outside. I would LOVE not to have a litter tray in the flat and wonder if we can just continue with this system. I guess some of this will work itself out.

I wonder if there's anyway I can reinforce that this will now be his permanent home? (I have bought lik-e-lix!) He's been living at the vets for a week and apparently hating it.

He also needs a name. I've just been calling him "the little cat." The previous owner apparently called him Shrieky, which absolutely isn't right.

Cat tax follows.

Aw he goes with your decor 🥰 agree with Magnus or Maverick

CandidOP · 18/06/2026 13:17

I reckon he’s a Rupert.
I wish the cat distribution system would work for me! I so miss our cats. We are fostering a guide dog puppy at the moment and he is lovely but nothing tugs at the heart like a cat. Enjoy every day with him.

OccasionalHope · 18/06/2026 13:17

From your username, could he be a Hercule?

Wheresthebeach · 18/06/2026 13:18

I think Mario. Gorgeous.

TheLongRider · 18/06/2026 13:18

Ooh he's definitely found his human. 💖

Siriusmuggle · 18/06/2026 13:18

He’s beautiful. My cat does office hours with no cat flap. Out at breakfast time then in for dinner and bed around 4. He has food and shelter outside too. He’s happy with the rules. He has a litter tray but only uses it about twice a year.

So mine has a litter tray (because he must be home when mama is asleep or at work) but he only uses it when hes ill tbh. Its just so if he needed out and couldnt get out he has a comfy place to go. So id get a small one but expect the current system to remain in place

Id name him something linked to wanderers - maybe Bob after Robert Frost who wrote the road not taken, or Chris/Colombus because hes found his new world. Or if hes vocal - Marley, Morrisey, (actually I just like Morris for a cat), Rod... just ideas.

He needs toys, and treats and a comfy bed/blanket he will ignore in favour of the box it came in or something of yours

Congratulations of the car distribution system bestoying this honour

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 18/06/2026 13:19

Ours has a litter tray and knows how to use it, but chooses not to. She's got a bladder of steel (I think most cats do), and will happily sleep for 9 hours and then just go when she's out. If we go away for a night and leave her in the house then she uses it then.

She's also a night owl like your cat. We don't have a cat flap and just suffer having to get up at 3am to either let her in or out. She meows at the top of her voice to be let in, but is happy enough staying out if we don't hear her. She's got a little shelter in the garden she can use but she prefers hiding under a car somewhere. Her behaviour also changes when the weathers crap. You may find yours becomes much more of a house cat in winter.

IckyIck · 18/06/2026 13:20

Sammy. Samuel Whiskers.

Annie202 · 18/06/2026 13:20

He is very handsome and such a lucky boy! Please have him neutered and vaccinated asap, the neuter will stop, or very much reduce, wandering and fighting. And don’t forget to update his chip with your details.
Please get a litter box, he may prefer to stay inside on a cold winter night. A covered box is much better and some of the new hi tech litters mean the smell is virtually nil. Enjoy your new cat mum life! x

TheLongRider · 18/06/2026 13:21

I think he needs a proper old man's name - Bob, Jim, Rob, Jack, Steve, Gary ( no-one names a baby Gary these days!)

cat tax

Oh hes wonderful - maybes hes a Hercule??? Or a Captain Arthur Hastings? Cap or Arty or just Hastings for short??

I love love love this game

CamilleBeauchamp · 18/06/2026 13:22

@Laura95167 I have a Morris, it is indeed a fine name... 😄

So happy that your kitty has found you, he chose well! I think Jeremy suits him too, but you'll just know what feels right.

I would advise having a litter tray because, if he gets shut in and is desperate, he might go in a corner somewhere, and then that will become his latrine, in his mind...

I am sure he will not stint to teach you the correct Ways of Cat... 😻

Isobel201 · 18/06/2026 13:24

I agree, get him neutered before he comes home? Saves you another trip to the vets.

Esmeraldathe3rd · 18/06/2026 13:24

Ask the vet to neuter, vaccinated and sort the microchip to you before you collect him. You'll need a litter tray to keep him in while that heals. But then yeah he should be happy with continuing as he was.

Cats going out at night is normal, they're quite active at night, it's not unusual for people to put their cats out at night.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/06/2026 13:09

Mr Tabs.

He's lovely! I wish a cat would adopt me Sad.

No self respecting cat will adopt you if you're going to call it Mr Tabs 😂 😂

OccasionalHope · 18/06/2026 13:17

From your username, could he be a Hercule?

Or Captain Arthur Hastings.. because hes fancy

@largeprintagathachristie mine has a bow tie should that be something your new house mate would enjoy

Tonissister · 18/06/2026 13:26

He's staggeringly handsome.

I'd get a cat flap installed asap and once he is neutered, try putting a top layer of soil or potting compost on cat litter in a tray near the cat flap, in case he feels too unwell to head outside at first. And he'll be wearing the cone of shame for several days until he's healed.

Get toys and treats to distract him. DCat also recommends bits of cooked fish and chicken, unsalted. And Kitty frubes.

We got adopted by a stray earlier this year. His litter tray has not been used in weeks, ever since he was allowed back out after his op.

Bristolandlazy · 18/06/2026 13:26

Congratulations, he's beautiful. We have a cat litter tray for our cat as she's old. But I miss it her younger days when we didn't. She would sleep all night and I would let her out first thing and no problems unless we slept in late. Some cats will sleep all night straight through and others are active at night. Older cats also more. Our cat prefers to sleep outside all night when it's super hot. Good luck. I would buy a cardboard scratching board for him to save your furniture. They can do a lot of damage scratching. Get flea treatment from the vets too if you can, that's the good stuff, we had a flea infestation twice and it's a vile nightmare. He's lucky to of selected you. 🐆🐾

Heleh · 18/06/2026 13:26

No idea I’d have to know personality but love your cat, love your bookshelf !

Glitterbiscuits · 18/06/2026 13:27

Henry.
He is very handsome
You may find he can use a litter tray if he’s left one to try.

Keep.us posted on how he’s doing!

ChocolateBiscuitsandaCuppa · 18/06/2026 13:27

I have nothing of value to add. Just wanted to say that this thread has warmed my heart, and he is GORGEOUS.
He chose well when he came to you.

whiteboard · 18/06/2026 13:28

He looks like a Sherlock to me! He certainly solved the mystery of where to live without any problems…

Monty36 · 18/06/2026 13:28

Gerald. When naughty. Jerry when good.
Or just Tibs.

Yellowpingu · 18/06/2026 13:29

The neutering should stop him roaming. We were recently claimed by an, un chipped entire tom cat. Put a post on local group saying he could stay with us if he didn’t have a home. A week later someone claimed him. For the next two weeks every time he escaped he came to us. His own home is a mile away. The last time we took him back to his owner she finally got him neutered and we haven’t seen him since. We miss the little guy and so does our resident kitty.
