OMG my visitor cat was actually a stray cat and is going to become officially mine - I have questions! And he needs a name

I've had what I first thought was a visitor cat for quite some time. Beautiful little tabby boy, very bold and entrepenurial - would come in to sleep during the day (I have a ground floor flat and windows and doors often often). I just thought he lived with a family who put him out during the day. He was always keen to take himself off at the end of the day. More latterly I'd tried a paper collar, asking around and a post to the local facebook group. Got nothing from any of that.

To cut a long story short, the cat looked ill last week - I found him on a deckchair on my patio looking very poorly - and after a couple of days of monitoring, I took him to my local vet. They scanned for a chip and there was an owner. I felt really, really sad but also pleased for him.

However. The owner on the chip had apparently "given him away." It took a few days for that owner to contact the current owner, who, I quote, "hasn't seem him in months and doesn't want him." (Can I just say here that this cat is approx 4 years old and not neutered, which makes me a little judgy of these owners.)

So the vet's practice have rung and asked if I want the cat. I do, and I'm picking him up later, but my mind is reeling a bit.

I didn't mind the cat going off god knows where overnight when I thought he had somewhere to go, but I now think he's just been out-out. I guess neutering may help a bit with his range and I'll get that done shortly.

On the days he was poorly last week he still went off at night but I left a patio door open slightly for him and he seemed to come in, in the early hours. It's not safe for me to have that door open - it's literally a patio door to my ground floor bedroom - so I either have to keep him inside overnight (he'd hate it) or get a cat flap put in the patio door. (I think there was a useful thread about this kind of thing recently).

I don't think he's ever used a little tray - he just had the ability to sleep for nine hours with a bladder of steel and then I assume go when he goes outside. I would LOVE not to have a litter tray in the flat and wonder if we can just continue with this system. I guess some of this will work itself out.

I wonder if there's anyway I can reinforce that this will now be his permanent home? (I have bought lik-e-lix!) He's been living at the vets for a week and apparently hating it.

He also needs a name. I've just been calling him "the little cat." The previous owner apparently called him Shrieky, which absolutely isn't right.

Cat tax follows.

The first name that popped into my head when I saw him was Emmett.

Googled it and it's an Irish name meaning 'Universal' and is also the Doc from Back to the Future's name - so a very adventurous name indeed 😺

It’s widely used in Ireland but not an Irish name itself iyswim. The ‘universal’ meaning is from German I think?

There was an Irish patriot called Robert Emmet and that’s why it became popular as a first name there.

IckyIck · 18/06/2026 17:03

@CamilleBeauchamp I took DCat to the vet for chipping and the receptionist asked 'Name?'. I gave my surname and she said it was a cool name for a cat. Grin I couldn't resist using it.

omghereistrouble · 18/06/2026 17:07

Yes, he wants neutering asap because if not they can be messy spraying in the house and also wandering, which is always dangerous with roads plus fighting with other cats, may end up with septic bites.
cat flaps are well worth it to me you can lock if you want to keep him in at night good idea
i hope you have many years of love with your cat

Norman !

Nigel or Alan. He looks like an Alan. Or a Kevin.

See I said that upthread !! We have a young Jack Russell rescue dog called Alan. He actually looks like an Alan, but I have no idea what an ‘Alan’ should look like. I guess it’s subjective. I also love the name Norman for either a cat or a dog.

ThatLilacPlayer · 18/06/2026 17:10

Lovely of you to give him a home❤️ His name could be Marlowe.

wheresthesnowgone · 18/06/2026 17:19

Cats ALWAYS have somewhere to go when they're not with you. He's probably got several 'owners' on the go.

maxslice · 18/06/2026 17:20

To me, he looks like his name is “ Captain”.

Catwalking · 18/06/2026 17:22

So sweet….. maybe he could be Treacle or Truffle, tho I do like Russett!
DD found ours as a kitten in an empty car park nearly 3 yrs ago. He uses cat tray in winter but really hates it & will always ‘go’ outdoors if he can.

I think its great that Leonard, having moved in, has graciously allowed you to remain in the home.

We have been similarly acquired by a semi feral one. We now spend relentlessly on dreamies and are at his beck and call whenever he wants to come in or out. Naturally he has declined to use a catflap when the slaves humans can just as easily be on hand to predict his every whim.

We've named him The Cat.

My grandma also had an adopted stray tabby cat called Cat. It was the meanest cat I'd ever met but she adored it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/06/2026 17:28

He's Monty

Mangelwurzelfortea · 18/06/2026 17:30

I also think Montgomery/Monty.

Oh gosh, OP, commit to this cat! You won't regret it.

We have taken in two strays in the past (both sadly now deceased). One had been spurned by every house in the street, because they misread him (he looked a bit thuggish when he was living wild). A few months with us and his true character came out - he was absolutely charismatic, and all the neighbours who had rejected his overtures were jealous. We had him for 8 years, he was an absolute gift, and I miss him every day (even though I have two gorgeous replacements).

If a cat choses you, they know what they are doing, and it will benefit you as much as it does them.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 18/06/2026 17:43

PS We got him neutered, and he came home from the vet's armed with a ton of painkillers, then promptly disappeared for 5 days. I went out of my mind with worry. Then he came back, settled into a chair, and never left. I swear he'd been thinking it all through after the operation.

Superscared · 18/06/2026 17:43

Ziggy or Jasper

HazelBite · 18/06/2026 17:47

He looks like a Hubert to me!

chatgptmeup · 18/06/2026 17:56

What a beautiful lucky boy! I love the suggestions for Stan and Monty. He really looks like a Stan. Yay for the cat distribution network.

You may have your work cut out for a while but you have given the little fella a safe and loving home (when he's in 🤣) and that's a beautiful thing to do. At last a Mumsnet post that has made my day that little bit brighter and not despairing for the future of humanity......

Aaah he is too cute. So pleased that he chose you.

I like human names too for pets. I think if I got another cat now I'd call him Daniel.

OMG so happy for you both!

How about Dave, Robert / Robbie or Hugo

As for the litter box, I would personally provide one and he'll either ignore it (quite likely) or not
