OMG my visitor cat was actually a stray cat and is going to become officially mine - I have questions! And he needs a name

I've had what I first thought was a visitor cat for quite some time. Beautiful little tabby boy, very bold and entrepenurial - would come in to sleep during the day (I have a ground floor flat and windows and doors often often). I just thought he lived with a family who put him out during the day. He was always keen to take himself off at the end of the day. More latterly I'd tried a paper collar, asking around and a post to the local facebook group. Got nothing from any of that.

To cut a long story short, the cat looked ill last week - I found him on a deckchair on my patio looking very poorly - and after a couple of days of monitoring, I took him to my local vet. They scanned for a chip and there was an owner. I felt really, really sad but also pleased for him.

However. The owner on the chip had apparently "given him away." It took a few days for that owner to contact the current owner, who, I quote, "hasn't seem him in months and doesn't want him." (Can I just say here that this cat is approx 4 years old and not neutered, which makes me a little judgy of these owners.)

So the vet's practice have rung and asked if I want the cat. I do, and I'm picking him up later, but my mind is reeling a bit.

I didn't mind the cat going off god knows where overnight when I thought he had somewhere to go, but I now think he's just been out-out. I guess neutering may help a bit with his range and I'll get that done shortly.

On the days he was poorly last week he still went off at night but I left a patio door open slightly for him and he seemed to come in, in the early hours. It's not safe for me to have that door open - it's literally a patio door to my ground floor bedroom - so I either have to keep him inside overnight (he'd hate it) or get a cat flap put in the patio door. (I think there was a useful thread about this kind of thing recently).

I don't think he's ever used a little tray - he just had the ability to sleep for nine hours with a bladder of steel and then I assume go when he goes outside. I would LOVE not to have a litter tray in the flat and wonder if we can just continue with this system. I guess some of this will work itself out.

I wonder if there's anyway I can reinforce that this will now be his permanent home? (I have bought lik-e-lix!) He's been living at the vets for a week and apparently hating it.

He also needs a name. I've just been calling him "the little cat." The previous owner apparently called him Shrieky, which absolutely isn't right.

Cat tax follows.

He's a cutie.
How about Werther, as in The Sorrows of Young?

Itsnotalwaysasyouthink · 18/06/2026 14:06

Shirkhan?

DancingFerret · 18/06/2026 14:12

That's lovely, OP. I hope you'll enjoy each other's company for years to come.

We were also adopted by someone else's cat - a huge black chap who started hanging around our house over three years ago. He was regularly beaten-up by our resident cats, but refused to be chased away. We have no close neighbours and couldn't work out where he lived until last autumn when his owners posted in our village's Facebook group asking if anyone had seen their cat as he hadn't been home for a week.

We sent them a photo of their cat lolling around on our patio. Very long story short, they have young children and also got a dog last year; they finally put two and two together and realised their black boy probably wasn't happy in a busy and noisy household. Would we like to keep him?

Nine months on, he loves his cuddles, rarely leaves the house and has finally won over our other cats - and his name is now Nigel.

Boswell.

Oh I love Boswell. The scribe mole of Duncton Wood.

I've always wanted to call a cat Baggins.

@largeprintagathachristie he's a gorgeous cat, you're lucky to be chosen and he's lucky to have found you

“Helping” me to work from home …

Gorgeous (Jeffry?) And I'm quite jealous of your beautiful Persephone collection as well!

ImWearingPantaloons · 18/06/2026 12:46

Can the vet sort jabs and neutering out before you bring him home?

OMG, he's gorgeous.

Agree with @ImWearingPantaloons to neuter as soon as possible. It calms them right down and they're not inclined to stray or spray once they're done.

If a cat flap isn't burglar proof where you are, you can get him used to being fed at your bedtime ( if he's been outside playing, he'll learn the routine) and then lock up while he's eating. If he's been living semi feral for a while, he may get claustrophobic so If he asks for out during the night, let him out, but he'll quickly learn that once he's out, he's out until morning when you get up. It will take patience as cats are naturally nocturnal and it's living with us that changes that around. Also, he'll probably want out for pottying.

Good luck and, yes. Please give him a human name. He deserves it.

Am loving @whiteboard's suggestion of Sherlock. You are clearly a perfect cat owner and he is very splendid!

quantumbutterfly · 18/06/2026 14:17

He is very handsome. Name him for your favourite leading man if you have one, or call him Dave, Dave's a good name for a cat.

Eideann · 18/06/2026 14:21

Absolutely gorgeous markings, he looks very majestic so I propose Leonidas @largeprintagathachristie 👑🐈

Dontfearthe · 18/06/2026 14:23

Colin

Dontfearthe · 18/06/2026 14:24

I've always wanted to call one of my cats Colin but they've all been adopted or come from people having to give them up....so they've already had names.

Blindbobisagreatcat · 18/06/2026 14:28

You're very privileged to have been chosen. He's lovely. He looks like a Bob but then I'm biased. Our Bob muscled his way in and has been here for about 8 years. Now blind but still lovely.

Along those lines I thought of Rex.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 18/06/2026 14:30

Barry.

Bigcat25 · 18/06/2026 14:30

Jasper maybe? A PP suggested Hercule, which made me think of Hercules.

lornad00m · 18/06/2026 14:30

He's a bonnie lad.

Pippin?

Chimneyissues · 18/06/2026 14:31

Mine has a litter tray and now refused to even pee outside! He comes in for one now.

Hes only allowed out during the day because he was fighting too much. So he’s out 7-6, he’s not happy about it but tough, can’t keep going back to the vets!

MrsPerfect12 · 18/06/2026 13:51

Stanley, Marvin or Hank?

We have a tabby Marvin! It's a most excellent name 😁

Esmeraldathe3rd · 18/06/2026 13:24

Ask the vet to neuter, vaccinated and sort the microchip to you before you collect him. You'll need a litter tray to keep him in while that heals. But then yeah he should be happy with continuing as he was.

Cats going out at night is normal, they're quite active at night, it's not unusual for people to put their cats out at night.

“Helping” me to work from home …

He looks like Westmacott to me pen name of Agatha Christie. May Sir Westmacott ...

Lucky seems to obvious, but he is a lucky cat to have found you.

JustSawJohnny · 18/06/2026 14:34

Oh he is BEAUTIFUL and it's so lovely that he chose you!

Great idea to get him neutered but I'd keep an open mind about keeping him inside too much. He's had so much freedom he is likely to not be able to emotionally cope with staying inside. Nothing wrong with keeping him in overnight, though.

I love human names for cats so I agree with lots here.

He looks like a Montgomery to me. A little Monty-Moo.

I hope you're really happy because he sure looks it! ❤

BangaloreLulu · 18/06/2026 14:35

I'd like to suggest Barry - it stems from the Old French word barri, which translates directly to "striped" 😊

How wonderful to be able to welcome him into your life on formal terms. I can't imagine my life without my little ginger diva, and I feel confident that yours will be all the richer now!

ERthree · 18/06/2026 14:36

keep his routine exactly as it was before, he came to your home because you treated him properly. Looks like a Rodney to me.
