OMG my visitor cat was actually a stray cat and is going to become officially mine - I have questions! And he needs a name

I've had what I first thought was a visitor cat for quite some time. Beautiful little tabby boy, very bold and entrepenurial - would come in to sleep during the day (I have a ground floor flat and windows and doors often often). I just thought he lived with a family who put him out during the day. He was always keen to take himself off at the end of the day. More latterly I'd tried a paper collar, asking around and a post to the local facebook group. Got nothing from any of that.

To cut a long story short, the cat looked ill last week - I found him on a deckchair on my patio looking very poorly - and after a couple of days of monitoring, I took him to my local vet. They scanned for a chip and there was an owner. I felt really, really sad but also pleased for him.

However. The owner on the chip had apparently "given him away." It took a few days for that owner to contact the current owner, who, I quote, "hasn't seem him in months and doesn't want him." (Can I just say here that this cat is approx 4 years old and not neutered, which makes me a little judgy of these owners.)

So the vet's practice have rung and asked if I want the cat. I do, and I'm picking him up later, but my mind is reeling a bit.

I didn't mind the cat going off god knows where overnight when I thought he had somewhere to go, but I now think he's just been out-out. I guess neutering may help a bit with his range and I'll get that done shortly.

On the days he was poorly last week he still went off at night but I left a patio door open slightly for him and he seemed to come in, in the early hours. It's not safe for me to have that door open - it's literally a patio door to my ground floor bedroom - so I either have to keep him inside overnight (he'd hate it) or get a cat flap put in the patio door. (I think there was a useful thread about this kind of thing recently).

I don't think he's ever used a little tray - he just had the ability to sleep for nine hours with a bladder of steel and then I assume go when he goes outside. I would LOVE not to have a litter tray in the flat and wonder if we can just continue with this system. I guess some of this will work itself out.

I wonder if there's anyway I can reinforce that this will now be his permanent home? (I have bought lik-e-lix!) He's been living at the vets for a week and apparently hating it.

He also needs a name. I've just been calling him "the little cat." The previous owner apparently called him Shrieky, which absolutely isn't right.

Cat tax follows.

He’s beautiful! Orion? Wanderer among the stars! Ori for short.

StoppedToTieHisShoe · 18/06/2026 13:01

You're right, his real name isn't Shrieky! He's Tabby McTat the Busker's cat!

Cyco · 18/06/2026 13:01

Ooh, such a fine feline! And he's looking at you with love.
I'd call him Raymond or Ray after my favourite Ghostbuster, who likes to prowl at night.

redboxer321 · 18/06/2026 13:01

I'm glad he found you @largeprintagathachristie
Sounds like he needed some kindness and in that respect, as in all others, he has landed on his feet with you 😀

How about Benjamin for a name? No reason, just like it and think it fits.

TheLongRider · 18/06/2026 13:03

I have a covered litter tray that is cleaned regularly and the smell is minimal.

You will need a litter tray for a few days after his snip.

You may also find that he is quite comfortable being an indoor cat and may never want to go out again! Some cats once they realise they have a home are very content to stay put and never go a wandering again!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/06/2026 13:04

Gorgeous boy!
yes to Jeremy.
get the cat flap asap then no need for a litter tray - you can put a cat flap through a wall - ours is.

Gatekeeper · 18/06/2026 13:04

He looks like a Haggis to me. Handsome chap

80smonster · 18/06/2026 13:05

HMRC can cross you off their list, thank you for paying your cat tax. What a beautiful boy!

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 18/06/2026 13:05

Oh! He is sooo a Stan!

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/06/2026 13:07

I think he's a Maverick or Rogue.

Welcome to the world of Cat slaves.

Iwanttobeafraser · 18/06/2026 13:07

Oh, he's gorgeous.

Once you start feeding him, he'll know it's home! Definitely get a cat flap - he's used to being able to come and go. But I agree with others, get him neutered asap. Can the vet do it now, no messing about bring him home and then taking him back again.

Owlcat42 · 18/06/2026 13:08

I taught my cat to use a cat flap by demonstrating with a fluffy toy cat.

It's good to have a litter tray anyway so you can whip it out if he's ill at any point in the future and doesn't want to go outside. I got one for my elderly cat when he communicated to me that he didn't want to go out for a wee in the winter cold and rain by repeatedly pissing on the bathroom rug. As soon as I added the litter tray there he knew what it was for. He only uses it in awful weather.

RigsbysCat · 18/06/2026 13:09

How lovely that you and this wee chap have found each other.

My cat has a litter tray that she literally never uses but I have it there just in case, because I can't have a cat flap as my cat would constantly bring in live mice etc like she did at our old house which did have one.

Your new catty might prefer to stay out at night in which case I'd highly recommend one of these, which can be bought with a cushion. My former cat whom I aquired in much the same way as you, didn't like to stay in at night and really took to his.

As for a name, that's a tough one, though he does look a lot like a friend's cat who was called Mr Tiggs, although he looks like a bit of a geezer who might suit something like Dave.

I agree with others. See if the vet will neuter him before you bring him home as he will be very resistant to going back after such a long stay.

He's is beautiful. You're a very kind person 😊

BeasKnee · 18/06/2026 13:13

I love him. His name is Albert - Al, Ally, Albie, Bertie, Bert, The Big B, Bertie-boo. All said whilst giving him a big fuss, gritting your teeth with love and knowing that you would eat him up for such a bloody cutie if you could (crazy cat lady here).

Mr Tabs.

He's lovely! I wish a cat would adopt me Sad.

3 times in my life I've been adopted by random cats who turned up at my door and moved themselves in. I loved them all dearly.

largeprintagathachristie · 18/06/2026 13:14

I hadn't realised how much I'd bonded with him until he suddenly wasn't there!
At least now I know that no-one is looking for him. I didn't want to be one of those people who accidentally or otherwise take someone else's cat.

Thank goodness for the cat distribution system. I'm definitely his person and he just really did make a house a home. I've kept accidentally looking for him in his usual places while he's been gone and felt so sad.

And I've got to work from home over the next months (my workplace has building issues) and he is a fabulous work from home companion.

We have a tom cat in our street and we call him Eduardo, he really suits it with his chubby cheeks. He’s a feisty thing. Does have an owner - but not very good ones.
