I’m sorry @Esgaroth, that sounds awful. I hope the school are taking it seriously and reassure you that your son will be kept safe in the future.

I’ve been working at home today and as soon as I put a blanket over my lap and the sofa next to me, Snowcat stopped being aloof and came to snuggle up against my side.

Kitty snuggled yesterday too. How’s Stripey getting on with the doors, @stormsandsunshine?

I’ve just been Googling cat trackers, I didn’t know they even came with cameras. Maybe in theory Finlay could even stream to @JaceLancs’s phone.

I bet a cat who wanted to could easily dispose of it though - I had a foster who took her collar off three times on the way back from being spayed.

Does anyone else remember a documentary (I think it was on the BBC), years ago before cat trackers were a thing? They asked cat owners in a village to volunteer to have a tracker fitted to their cat and a few had cameras as well. They mapped all their journeys and showed that the most rural cats had the biggest territories and some cats seemed to time share their routes, so they didn't meet each other. I found it fascinating, but I'm someone who loves analysing data.

I remember it well -'The secret life of cats'
An absolutely brilliant documentary. 😺

Yes, it was fascinating.

I recall one very elderly cat. His owners said at the beginning that they thought he probably only popped out occasionally and briefly during the night, and didn't go far. It turned out that he went all over the place, for hours at a time.

He had a specific route which he followed, too. Most of them did. And they were very good at avoiding one another.

@EmpressaurusKitty it’s been too cold to have the doors wide open. I’ve had them open a bit for the cats to go out but neither are that interested (they are probably chilly too). Snowcat sat on the patio for a bit but then came back in.

HumanToCatBeasties · 08/05/2025 19:49

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembered it. I didn't have cats at the time, but it was still really interesting. It makes me feel bad that Matilda and Boris are house cats, as I live so close to the main road. They have been enjoying some supervised time in the garden though. Matilda, as usual, decided to try and eat all the plants and Boris decided to inspect my Passion flower/ next doors dodgy fence. Also, I really need to do some weeding this weekend.

I loved the secret life of cats - one was based in Brighton and as I used to live their enjoyed seeing all the areas again
It’s certainly true that Finlay revisits the same areas with very rare exceptions outside that - I assume that he avoids other areas as they verge onto other cats territories - we live in a very quiet small close and he never goes out the front of house as there are too many other cats
His favourite field as well as one across the other side of the main road are boundaried to the north by a brook and he hates water so won’t go any further
There are nearer fields but if they have animals in he stays close to
the edge - although not in the one with horses and donkeys
DP would love to try a camera but he’s quite a small cat and think they would be too heavy

Pianoaholic · 09/05/2025 07:29

That programme sounds interesting.
I doubt Herbie would provide exciting footage though.

He only goes out for max 2hrs at a time and spends the rest of the time indoors, he is the opposite of Finlay.
I'm a bit cross with him at the moment as yesterday, he came in with a little bird in his mouth.😥

RumNotRun · 09/05/2025 09:23

I remember watching that programme. At the time, my ex and I were convinced that our one cat barely left the garden. After watching the programme, we realised we were probably very wrong.

Vixen has made it to the next road once and then stayed outside one house for a few days, presumably because she couldn't find her way home. She's not the brightest cat at times!

That must have been really worrying, @RumNotRun.

My friend’s cat always escorts her to the edge of his territory if she’s going out & then waits there for her to come back.

That’s occasionally meant that someone’s had to go & retrieve him if she comes back a different way.

I did think I'd never see her again but then a relatively local rescue put up a picture of her on FB. I had to walk 40 minutes to collect the little madam but she was very pleased to see me. She's an indoor cat so she's not chipped.

Esgaroth · 09/05/2025 11:42

I genuinely don't think Kettle goes more than 50m beyond our garden (and most of the time not even that) because he's only out for max 30 minutes at a time, usually less, and I can see him sniffing around the garden, sitting on the deck a bit, nibbling some grass and coming straight back in. He'll stay out a little longer if we're out with him. He's shut in at night so no mysterious nocturnal wanderings.

I suspect he probably enjoys the outdoors in small doses due to his life experiences and natural laziness (I also think he sticks even closer to the house after he was attacked), but he does still enjoy his garden sniffing sessions.

Breadcat24 · 09/05/2025 12:29

We have cameras set up inside our house for when we go on holiday and can confirm that Breadcat spends most of her time asleep on a spare bed, if she does go outside she sleeps under the hedge. It would be a boring tracker!

Esgaroth · 09/05/2025 12:36

@Breadcat24 I expect they edited 'boring' cats like ours out of the documentary 😄 Not much of a secret life!

RumNotRun · 09/05/2025 12:43

I just bought a tray of prawns for the tribe as a treat. They all sniffed them and walked away at first, then eventually Lexter tried one and quickly devoured the entire 150g tray. Frank normally eats prawns from special fried rice if I get a Chinese, maybe he only likes seasoned ones. I then cooked some white fish fillets. Lex has barely come up for air. I think he likes seafood!

Breadcat24 · 09/05/2025 12:48

Husband is away this weekend so I am cooking all Breadcat's favourites- we are having a roast chicken party tonight

Gizmo spent the morning outside, then returned at 2pm to discover the cleaner in situ.

So he hissed at her and went straight back out again.

Saw this BBC archives video of a delightfully barmy woman in the 70s who gave money to charity through her two cats and I thought I must post it here.

Quicksilver looks like she was a very sweet cat (fledgling slaughter notwithstanding).
