false saving in the Breadcat house
The one on the left 79p is not considered an adequate substitute for the one on the right £1.20

We've had to donate countless cheapo versions of Lick-e-Lix.

The cats subscribe to the Accept No Substitutes school of thought.

We've ended up donating them to the lady who rehomes cats in the next village. She also feeds feral cats.

I daresay they all rejected them, too.
🤣

I made the mistake once of buying Churus from Amazon. They were a massive hit but also about 2-3 times the price of Dreamies/Lik-e-Lix/Bonkers. Thankfully I didn't buy enough for the tribe to develop a taste for them.

I wish I'd known.
I bought a million of them, which Linney rejected immediately.

That's an absolutely glorious photo, @TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne ! We need to know more. Do the cats paddle along the beach looking for shrimp?

Esgaroth · 03/04/2025 13:56

Send the off brand treats to Kettle, he's permanently starving and will eat anything.

He hopped up on the worktop after his breakfast this morning and managed to eat the rest of his daily can which had been accidentally left out, and finish it off with the leftover milk from a child's cereal bowl.

He was very pleased with his extra breakfast but something tells me he won't be so happy with his tiny dinner later 😆

Absolutely. Cat heaven!

Esgaroth · 03/04/2025 14:20

We live very near the sea (no sea view though unfortunately) and I've seen cats on the sea wall but never seen one go down to the actual beach. I think they don't want to get their little paws wet if they can help it.

Could be the cats in our town are wimps, though.

The churu lollipop ones weren't so popular but the ones that are like a more solid Lik-e-Lix were Frankie's favourite. He couldn't get enough of them!

I have so much rejected food I need to donate but both my local tesco and sainsburys have stopped having a donating place. Will try the local cats proteion charity shop

My vet and the local Pets at Home both have donation boxes for food - could that work as a one-off?

Breadcat24 · 03/04/2025 17:29

@EmpressaurusKitty Thank you I will try that!

Same here! In the past I have given any rejected tins and pouches to the Pets at Home collection point. But recently had a barely touched 5kg bag of dry food that had been soundly dismissed by my 2 - so gave that to the local vets as it was opened.

Allergictoironing · 03/04/2025 18:08

One of the local rescues close to me will arrange a volunteer who lives in your area to pick up any stuff like that if it's a decent amount. They were exceptionally grateful when I donated quite a large amount of Kidney food after Boycat was PTS, as they had recently had 2 cats with CKD dumped on them and it's sooo expensive!

Well I've never seen Linney or Gizmo down there..

I bought lick-e-lixs once after the owner of the cattery was telling me how much Boris loved it during his stay. I put one into their bowls and they both looked at me like wtf is this and why are you expecting me to eat it?

I have a ridiculous amount of urinary cat food after buying several different brands to try and find one Boris will eat. He's taken to waking me up at stupidly early times in the morning to tell me he's minutes away from starving to death, so I might try him on them again. He'll no doubt refuse to eat it, but its worth a go.

I've also embarrassingly ended up with an opened bag of Iams dog food after I stupidly bought it thinking it was cat food. I was opening it when I suddenly realised that it had a picture of a dog on it. Not sure what I'm going to do with it.

RumNotRun · 03/04/2025 20:39

I feel like a parent sometimes with this lot. "You're not having anymore until you finish what's on your plate". "No Dreamies until you've eaten your dinner". Every now and again, a couple of them (usually Toad and Lexter) will decide they don't like whatever food I am serving but one of the others will usually still eat it. On the rare occasion that they all go on hunger strike, any already dished up food goes out for the gulls and the unopened cans go in the cupboard for the future, once they've forgotten that they don't like it.

A vet told me years ago that I shouldn't keep switching up the brands I give them but I think that's rubbish advice as everyone knows a cat will stop eating any brand once you stock up.

There’s probably a local dog rescue that will snap it up.

JoanOgden · 03/04/2025 20:59

I gave a lot of rejected cat food to the local PDSA once, they were grateful. Mostly though I just give it to my nephew-cat who is built like a brick shithouse and eats anything Grin

We certainly see a different side of Gizmo these days! No more the fierce guardian of the Grumpy threshold

Pianoaholic · 04/04/2025 13:49

Herbie has the vets later!🙀 hopefully he won't raise a formal objection to going in his carrier. I have the gardening gloves at the ready!

stormsandsunshine · 04/04/2025 13:50

There was a lot of loud miaowing last night when we were trying to go to bed. We thought it was Snowcat being pushy about her toy mouse gifts (which she likes to bring upstairs to the landing in the night and insists are acknowledged).

Actually, Stripey had sneaked into the wardrobe while we were putting clothes away and was stuck in there.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 04/04/2025 14:08

Sebastian also went to the vet's, too get his sutures removed.

He was a very good boy.

Herbie once spent the night stuck in the (v small) hall!
I came down in the morning, opened the door and he shot out. He had scratched up the carpet in there but fortunately not left us any 'presents'!
