I'm so sorry, Godspeed Emerald

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/07/2023 20:58

I'm really very sorry to hear this Shell. It's such a shock when a pet goes downhill so quickly, but it does mean she wasn't poorly for long. I'll raise a glass to Emerald this evening. 💐

prettybird · 04/07/2023 21:01

So sorry Sad. At least she got to spend one last night at home where she was loved Flowers

ShoutyCatSlave · 04/07/2023 21:06

So sorry to hear this. 😥.

Qat · 04/07/2023 21:42

RIP Beautiful Emerald
Well loved and blessed with the most gorgeous name too ❤️❤️❤️

FlatArthur · 04/07/2023 22:12

I'm so sorry. Rest in peace, sweet Emerald. 😿

Defiantlynot41 · 04/07/2023 22:36

So so sorry @TheShellBeach. She was a beautiful girl and will be so missed.

Hugs to you and your family (and Linney )

Supersimkin2 · 05/07/2023 08:08

So sorry for you all. You did the right thing for darling Emerald and she’s in peace.

Headrub to Linney 💐

Be very gentle to yourself now.

Allergictoironing · 05/07/2023 08:25

Deepest sympathy Shell. Don't be at all surprised if you find she's still "visiting" you, catching a glimpse out of the corner of your eye or hear her in another room - Boycat still jumps on my bed some mornings, and he was PTS in February!

How's the other 4 legged family member coping?

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 05/07/2023 10:03

Poor Emerald - but she had such a good life with you, and because of you she had a good death too. She will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge now. ❤️

Thank you, Allergic.

Linney (who is Emerald's brother) is a bit puzzled , but not frantic. Not yet, anyway.

I do remember when one of our other cats died, (McVicar) Buster ran round and round the house for a couple of hours, desperately searching for her. It broke my heart to see him.

Linney just keeps going in and out of the garden, but he does that all day in any case. I am wondering if he's looking for her.

Yesterday, when we took Emerald to the vet for the final time, and knowing in our hearts that PTS was highly likely, he followed us to the car. Usually, when he sees the carrier he runs a mile. I mean, they all do, don't they - they don't want to be put in a carrier. But yesterday evening, he accompanied DH all the way to the car.

And then he stood on the pavement, watching as we drove away.

One of my DDs said to me "Mum, cats know things that we don't" and I am sure she's right.

On a different note, it's my birthday today and we're going out for dinner tonight. Neither of us feels like celebrating but it'll get us out of the house. We've already cancelled next week's holiday - I think we had no choice - we didn't know if Emerald was still going to be alive, and if she was, what treatment she would need, so we couldn't just go away. And now she's dead, we can't abandon Linney just after he's lost his pal. And we don't feel like having a holiday now.

Oh, and as for seeing cats who have died - I thought I saw Buster a couple of days ago.
And he died in 2021!

The night McVicar died, there was a definite scratching noise behind my bed. We do not have mice and there was no explanation for it - but McVicar always slept on the bed with me after knocking everything off the bedside table nightly
I have always believed that it was a sign from her. And I am not in the least bit woo.

Grumpy, it was so fast.

We couldn't believe it. I only noticed her breathing was fast on Sunday at 11 pm.
She was dead less than two days later.
There was no treatment she could have and she seemed to be distressed.

I expect we all question ourselves when we have an animal put to sleep. I am sure we made the right decision with Emerald. She was eleven, after all, and the vet said she'd never seen such a large amount of aspirated fluid from a cat's pleural effusion. There was nothing else we could have done.

I swing between feeling glad she's not in pain, sad she's no longer here, and distressed in case we PTS too soon.

So sorry about Emerald TheShellBeach, especially as it's your birthday today. She looked so beautiful in your photos and I'm sure she led a wonderful life with you. Best wishes to you, your family and the lovely Linney.

Remember - better a week too soon than a day too late!

Girlcat wasn't overtly distressed when Boycat was PTS, but within a very few days she became much cuddlier than before & even a bit clingy - very unlike her. That was the main driver in bringing Tobias home, not for me but for her.

Took them a couple of months to really get on well, and she's still more demanding of attention than she used to be, but no longer clingy & spends much of her time in his room as opposed to my bedroom.

coastergirl · 05/07/2023 20:23

Hi all

I was thinking this thread had gone very quiet...turns out I had somehow unwatched it without realising. Life has been very busy so I didn't notice. Just spent a while catching up. I'm so, so sorry to read about beautiful Emerald. It's heartbreaking, losing a beloved pet. Sending love.

Walter is in the bad books today. He's not a pukey cat, it's very rare for him to be sick. But I slipped down the stairs the other night and have a suspected fractured rib. It's extremely painful, and bending down is almost impossible, so of course, today he threw up his biscuits on the kitchen floor. Ouch.

I have already thought about getting a companion for Linney. DH doesn't want to think about it at the moment though so I'll give it some time.

Linney has never been a day without Emerald. In a couple of days we'll see how he reacts.

Oh @TheShellBeach I'm so very sorry. She was beautiful and my heart is breaking for you.
You know it was the right time, the only possible choice.
Run free over the rainbow bridge, darling girl, where Ollie and all the other cats are waiting to greet you.
Love and hugs @TheShellBeach (())

Thank you so much for this, Papergirl.

I have definitely felt a presence - well, heard a miaow - after our dearly loved car died, and my very un-woo dad felt him jump on the bed.
I hope you manage to maybe at least get a few days out next week @TheShellBeach
Ouch, @coastergirl that sounds very painful.
Look after yourselves, both of you

RumNotRun · 05/07/2023 22:05

I've "seen" favourite cat out of the corner of my eye a few times since he was PTS. I also think he's curled up with me on my bed several times.

I've said on here before but Pigeon and Favourite Cat were PTS within 2 days of each other. Both went downhill so quickly. Pigeon was fine on Sunday then when I got home from work the next day her breathing was weird and she was limp. She was PTS pretty much as soon as we got to the vet. FC had really bad UTIs in the past but again, was fine one day, but the next day was rushed to the vet and PTS the next morning. I miss them both so fucking much, every day, but I am so glad that they were healthy and happy till the last minute.

Emerald had an amazing life with you @TheShellBeach and knew she was loved.xx

On a lighter note, it's still starting to get light in the mornings just after 4am. I know this because Tobias greets the dawn with a magnificent range of calls, growly meows (normal for him), and squawks (again, one of his go-to vocalisations).

Every. Damn. Morning.

He does it long enough to wake me so I go to the loo, then once I'm awake enough to find it hard to go back to sleep he snuggles down in his room and contentedly sleeps until breakfast is served.

I love him, but sometimes, just sometimes, I do call him every name under the sun!

Florissante · 06/07/2023 07:44

Awww, Tobias. Let your human sleep, you little monkey.
