By the way, I took Emerald to the vet last week and she was weighed - and she'd lost 650g! Three rousing cheers!

DH and I were amazed because we'd given up trying with her supposed diet.
Taking her to Cat Slimming World was was so dispiriting and the diet cat food cost an arm and a leg so it was a great surprise to find she'd actually lost weight at last.

Squidge needs to shed about 500g - I've been weighing her food and she's not pleased about it. At all. Vet appt for bravecto and worming next week, so we'll see how she's doing.

I was quoting TP who was referring to ancient Egyptians, who are no longer with us. Basil would need to take it up with the sainted PTerry, who very sadly is no longer with us.

NewBoots - the table on the back of the packet of ridiculously expensive diet cat food is bonkers.
It wasn't until I started giving Emerald 21g of it daily (weighed out meticulously) plus one pouch of ordinary cat food (daily) that the miracle occurred.
There was a thread on here about Fat Cats and most posters agreed that you had to give your cat a lot less than the packet said.

The Ancient Egyptians were very, very busy mummifying cats too.

On 10th February 1890 an estimated 180,000 mummified cats, weighing 19.5 tons, were sold at auction at the docks in Liverpool. Almost all were crushed and spread on fields like manure but a few were saved and remain in World Museum.

And @NewBootsAndRanty what I should have said was that the packet said to give 65g daily - so we did - then the vet said to give her 55g - then a month later (with no weight loss) 45g - and another month later 35g.................you get the picture.
We were taking her monthly and reducing the quantity of food as per the vet's instructions. Despite this she lost nothing - so down we went to 25g.

It was at this point that we decided not to bother taking her to be weighed any more. It was so stressful (the vet's is half an hour away and Emerald miaows piteously every 8 seconds when in the car - I've timed her) so we decided that she was just meant to be fat.

And then I got annoyed with it all, and unilaterally decided to just give her 21g daily. I figured that if she was hungry she'd soon let me know.

And there we stayed. 21g daily. And four months later, she had lost 650g. We hadn't even taken her to Cat Slimming World. It was for something else but she was weighed anyway.

The vet and I did a dance of exultation when we saw how much she'd lost.

BTW Cat Slimming World doesn't really exist.........it's just what I used to call
