Just had to leave my cat at the vets

My poor cat has been a bit off colour for a few days , last night seemed to be having problems peeing so I made a appointment and took him to the vets.
The poor mite has a very full bladder the vet tried to massage his bladder and relive it but it didn't work so he has to be anesthetized and a catheter fitted .

They also need to run some blood test take sure his liver and kidneys are ok .

worried

I'm sorry - it's horrible to have to leave them there but i'm sure you know he is in the best place to be monitored properly and get the treatment he needs. I hope he is back home with you soon, sulking but healthy :) x

NewYearCalavicci · 31/12/2021 15:44

Thanks @TheStarMachine , you are right and I trust this vets practice 100% it's just hard.
They are going to ring me this evening/ tommorrow depending on his bloods

@NewYearCalavicci It does feel very strange to come home without them. My boy is quite old now so it has happened a few times that I have had to leave him and I just try to keep myself busy until I get the call. I end up doing things like emptying cupboards and de-cluttering, because I can't sit still. Fingers crossed for a good call re the bloods and everything else x

Igmum · 31/12/2021 16:09

Sending love and fingers crossed ❤️

Alysskea · 31/12/2021 16:15

Sending you lots of support. This happened to our boy cat and it's a horrible feeling leaving them there but he did make a full recovery.

Your cat is in good hands 🧡

@NewYearCalavicci

Oh, I'm am sorry to read this news! I'm glad you were able to get him in for treatment..they will take good care of him and he'll be home soon as good as new...they are so resilient! I think @GrumpyOldPersonWithcCats has had this issue recently.
Handholding, AL!

@NewYearCalavicci
How old is the little dear?

Want2beme · 31/12/2021 17:16

2 male cats I had were prone to this. Both of them were catheterised several times. They both lived to the ripe old age of twenty. You took him to the vet in good time. He'll be right as rain and back to you soonSmile. One of mine was kept for a week and I thought I'd never get him back. The nurses loved himGrin

Fatarseflanagan09 · 31/12/2021 17:19

Hope everything's okay bless him.

NewYearCalavicci · 31/12/2021 17:43

Thank you all for your messages , its good to hear of the positive recovery cases .
The vets have rang me back a couple of times .
1st time - They managed to empty about 90% of his bladder there was no obvious reason for the blockage , they think it may be stress related ( he is a bit high strung ) I have the choice , come back and pick him up but keep a very close eye on him and if he seems to struggle peeing bring him back right away
Or leave him there and they will keep him sedated on a drip with pain killers and the catheter still in .
I opted to leave him there , in part because I am worried about not seeing him struggling to pee and leaving it to late , and it would take me a hour at least to get him back there .
The second call from the vets was to say they have now emptied his bladder completely and he is on just enough sedation to stop him taking his catheter out , I can pick him up tomorrow at 10.30 .

My male cat used to suffer from UTIs that do this to him. His were brought on by stress so we give him a cystease tablet every day now and he's been fine since. Hopefully yours recovers just as quickly and is home with you soon.

sunshinesupermum · 31/12/2021 18:03

Neilsgavouritechilli how long have you had to give your DCat a daily cysteaze tablet. Our rescue girl is an anxious lady and suffered from stress related cystitis with her previous owner.

sunshinesupermum · 31/12/2021 18:04

Neilsfavouritechilli not Neilsgavouritechilli!!

Neilsfavouritechilli · 31/12/2021 18:27

@sunshinesupermum we've done it daily for the last few years. They're cheap as chips on Amazon and are capsules so we can break it up and mix it into his wet food. He's a greedy sod though which helps.

sunshinesupermum · 31/12/2021 18:35

Thanks Neil Did the vet recommend this or was it just trial and error on your part?

TheCreamCaker · 31/12/2021 18:35

Glad to hear he's doing well. My cat was the same, a few years ago, and the vet said it was due to anxiety (we'd been on holiday)

Want2beme · 31/12/2021 18:41

OP I would leave mine with the vet as well. Hope you're evening doesn't seem too long without himSmile

TempNameChangexx · 31/12/2021 18:49

Unfortunately male cats do tend to have issues with peeing.
My cat has this when he's stressed - he's pretty jumpy so even the wind freaks him out sometimes!
Our vet recommended Cystease (as another poster mentioned) plus he gets wet food more often now (he does like Felix Soup Grin) and I get the Hill's Prescription Diet Urinary Stress dry food for him now.
Touch wood, he hasn't had an episode for a couple of years.
Hopefully your boy makes a speedy recovery.

SwtPeasOnEarth · 31/12/2021 20:56

@NewYearCalavicci

Yay, for a well little kitty cat! A purrfect way to start the New Year! ( corny pun, I know🙄)

NewYearCalavicci · 01/01/2022 11:43

Well the kitten is back at home , he has 6 diff meds tho take 2x per day ( that's going to be fun ! ) the vets had real problems getting his IV line in so his leg is be used and swollen .

I have got to try to keep his stress levels down that will go like

Fire works > meh
Dog barking > huh ?
Someone at the door > d,ya mind I am sleeping here
I unlace my boots oh my god what ! You frightened the life out of me

I am glad he is home with you, best wishes for his recovery. I always crush my cat's tablets between two spoons and put in a tiny drop of cat milk. I got a Feliway plug in when I moved house and I think it does work, my very elderly cat loves sleeping in the room where it's plugged in. Expensive but does last a month.

RavenT · 01/01/2022 11:51

I had a male cat who suffered with this for some years, also due to stress.

However once loud and shouty (not at the cat) exH moved out he never had problems again and lived until he was 19. Smile When I think of all the money I wasted on those de stress plug ins, when the answer was a lot simpler! 🤣

I am glad your cat is safely back home. Smile

NewYearCalavicci · 01/01/2022 12:42

Here is a odd question , how does a stressed cat act ?
I had no idea mine was stressed , he is not particularly affectionate but us very vocal and can be playful with mad zoomies every now and then

All this stopped a few days ago but I think that was down to him been ill .
There did not seem to be any change in his behaviour befor he became ill and nothing I can think if could of caused him stress
