So do I or don't I?

Yesterday I took my friend to pick a kitten from my brothers house.
I fell in love with one of the kittens who was absolutely adorable.
I sent my husband photos and he said 'if you want one get one but I won't be involved' (we all know that would last about five minutes 😂)
After playing with them all for about an hour we pack up friends kitten and head home.
Now I'm thinking I should have brought the one home that I liked. Especially given that it's the only one that isn't spoken for.
We have an older dog who is soft as anything and would wander round the garden with our guinea pigs when we had them with no prey drive at all. She would ignore my mums old cat when we visited. She was more interested in the poop. Which leads me to another con on the list.
My heart says yes but my head says no. We had no plans to get a cat but we can afford one. My kids would love it, but it's, potentially, a 15 year plus commitment.
There are probably more cons than pros!
Realistically I know that it's care would fall to me as the dogs does.
I have no idea how much keeping a cat costs. I'd get insurance because we all know cats can get themselves into sticky situations!
If it makes a difference I did animal care at college and I've worked in rescue and boarding previously.

If you were me what would you do?

Do it. In a week you’ll be posting a picture of mr “I’m having nothing to do with it” with the kitten sleeping under his chin, your floor will be littered with toy mice and balls of paper and everyone will have just a little bit more joy in their lives. Cats really are no bother compared to dogs.
Oh and please make sure your brother’s cat gets spayed.

She's already booked in. They had planned on sorting her before she had a litter. Smile

Get the kitten.

Flufferty · 25/09/2021 07:43

I'd get the kitten if you're certain your dog will be OK with it.

NinDS · 25/09/2021 07:47

Get the kitten!! I have two and a dog and they all get along just fine. They don’t cost a lot to look after but definitely get insurance as vet bills can be very expensive! Get a top opening litter tray to stop the dog eating the poo! Post a pick when you’ve got it!

icedcoffees · 25/09/2021 07:47

Do it Grin

Honestly, cats are so low maintenance. The only thing you'd need to factor in is care if you're away but you can use catteries or get a cat sitter to pop in.

Mine are barely any work whatsoever - they get fed twice a day, have biscuits/water down all the time and then it's just their litter trays to deal with. It probably takes ten minutes, if that.

NinDS · 25/09/2021 07:47

*Picture that was supposed to say! Lol

icedcoffees · 25/09/2021 07:48

Oh and we also have a dog and they all snuggle together Smile

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/09/2021 08:28

Could you take two of the kittens? It's much easier
with two.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2021 08:38

Do it!!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2021 08:39

Poor kitten with no one else interested in him........!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2021 08:40

If you've already got a dog then you are committed already, so you might as well.

Motorina · 25/09/2021 08:41

There's only one left. I would always have said get two to anyone else but in this instance it's just one on it's own and we do have the dog who I think will play with her. Also her litter sister lives across the (quiet) road so she can have play dates 😂

In terms of costs, initial set up is relatively expensive. Maybe £100 for initial jabs/microchip/worming etc, and another £70 for neutering?

After that, your costs are insurance, food, and litter. And dreamies. Dreamies are very important. Maybe £30 a month all told?

Get the kitten :)

Theunamedcat · 25/09/2021 08:44

Get the kitten teach it to use a top opening box or one thst the dog cannot access to get to the poop

Theunamedcat · 25/09/2021 08:47

Something like this maybe?

Cats are very little work compared to a dog. (Kittens of a few months old are crazy things, but once they calm down it's all good).

The initial expense can be a bit of a shock with vaccinations and microchips, but after that cats are quite cheap.

I used baca for life with Vets4Pets because they're the nearest vets, so after paying £99 I don't need to pay again each year.

I spend about £45 -££50pm on food for two cats (DH keeps giving them food all day, which they waste)

Flea drops are about £5 per month depending where you get it.

My cats gave up on the littler tray.

Don't even bother buying a cat bed. Mine have a lovely huge one for when they're locked in the dining room & kitchen at night (they can go out of the cat flap) but they prefer to sleep on a dining chair so I have to Hoover it.

You should definitely about any big decision over night. Now you've done that, go and collect your new friend Smile

Definately get insurance, we ended up at the emergency vet at midnight this week, dcat has been now for 2 nights and it looks like £800-900. We'll have to pay upfront but should be able to claim everything but the excess back.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Hope your cat is ok. X

I've spoken to dh this morning or spoken at him! He was laughing at me for the monologue and I told him that's what my brain has been like for the past 18 hours 😂
