Need urgent advice for a tiny kitten!

I've rescued a kitten who has been rejected by it's mum. It was one of two, Mum took the bigger one and never returned. Poor little thing was calling for her all yesterday and it broke my heart keeping my distance but today it started to go very quiet and shakey so I've taken it in. I know nothing about kittens no idea how old it is (fits easily into my hand, massive eyes and ears, very skinny wobbly legs that look a bit too long for its little body). I've given it tiny drops of milk from a syringe (sp?) prob takes 1ml at a time before it starts to refuse. What do I do (mostly regarding feeding but other advice would be much appreciated)? Live abroad so no shelters or rescue homes so I'm on my own with this one.

squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

He's a skinny 3 week old one I think. More than 2 weeks old as I'd guessed by weight. He needs some good feeding!!

How often are you feeding him? And how much is he taking?

threeleftfeet · 04/05/2012 18:49

You can get cat milk in the supermarkets. Don't know if it's the right thing for kittens but got to be better than cows surely?

SecretNutellaFix · 04/05/2012 18:49

awwwwwwww so cute he's a beauty

mycatsaysach · 04/05/2012 18:54

also agree looks about 3/4 weeks too

Pinot · 04/05/2012 18:55

Nutty :o

Not to worry you, but I am a bit worried how skinny he is. I'd encourage you to feed every hour on the hour (and through the night) and to make really really sure he's warm enough. My thinking is that he doesn't have body fat like a normal chubby kitten and so needs extra-extra help. With the feeding, I understand it that their stomachs shrink so he'll feel full after a millilitre or two, due to shrinkage, whereas for his size he actually needs more than he realises.

Does this all make sense? I was a right obsessive wally with my kittens and used to fuss over them constantly. I really hope he's OK.

I'll be offline again tonight in a bit so again - just PM if you want me.

I'm giving her 5ml of goats milk (they don't do kitten stuff in Turkey) every two hours. The last feed she took a bit more than that. Yesterday it was litterally 1ml and I practically had to force that down her. Now she asks for it and paws at my tummy while trying to find a teat Grin. I am seriously in love! I'd do anything for my kitty. Not given her a name yet as I was too scared of bonding and losing her but I'm head over heals anyway so... any suggestions?

OP posts:

Can you move it to every hour or 90 minutes, for a while? 2 hours is quite a big gap for a young kitten, especially a skinny one. 5ml sounds good - that's encouraging as is that she wants it from you.

Any poo yet? Have you tried rubbing her tummy in gentle circular motions? You do have to be quite firm on their anus to stimulate it - imagine how rough a cats tongue is when a Mum cat does it... :)

Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2012 19:00

Coco?

What are the rest of the family making of all this? Grin

3littlebadgers · 04/05/2012 19:05

Coco is cute! I will do as you suggest regarding the feeds, still no poos but maybe if she is so skinny her body is soaking up everything it gets. Wees like a trouper though! My three children love her and evern my DH (who has put his foot down about not letting animals in the house) gives her a little tickle when he thinks I'm not looking.

Was just going to suggest trying her more frequently, but pipped to the post as it were.

Pinot- you never did let me come and see steal Ginger did you?

Pinot · 04/05/2012 19:13

No Nutty because he is so beautiful and purry that you would have had him up your jumper in a flash. A flash I tell thee :o

He sleeps by my feet every night :) I fall asleep every night to the sound of him purring and pacing through the duvet on my legs. Meow (the girl) sleeps by DH. She adores DH, like a tart.

OP I think your instinct is right about the poo - I will be relieved when she finally does one. Am I weird? :o

hello Fab :)

JustFab · 04/05/2012 19:15

Hello YRH Pinot Grin.

FABCat has been a pickle today.

SecretNutellaFix · 04/05/2012 19:15

I'll swap cottonbud flinging and chewing fluffy fatboy? He also loves a cuddle and will spend all evening stretched out against your leg with his claws going in and out of delicate skin very quickly purring all the time?

Pinot · 04/05/2012 19:20

Fab you cheeky minx Wink

Nutty fatboy sounds delish. I'll have him anytime. I also really want Zombie's new cat and Vallhalas ginger boy. I am turning into her!

This is a great link!

"Single Kitten Syndrome" - not somethign I knew about as I had 3 (then just 2 :( ) but it's good advice to give her a small v soft toy to bon with for when you;re not holding her. Also impresses the importance of as much physical contact as you can. Which is the best bit innit!

Pinot · 04/05/2012 19:21

oh man! Typos! Sorry - one handed typing. v soft toy to BOND with etc

JustFab · 04/05/2012 19:21

Oh Sad. Is that why FABCat cries while carrying her pom pom caterpillar around with her, because she was an only kitten? SadSad

Pinot · 04/05/2012 19:23

Oh nooo dont worry Fab mate, y'know FABCat is a drama queen!
