Advice on neighbours dog…neglected.

Neighbour has lived next door for 2 years. Had this dog for last 14 months.

I’m home all day and never seen him be walked or played with.

Living in outside wooden kennel which is covered in his poo and has hardly any water.

Desperate for attention when I walk by him but shaking on approach.

Thr dog warden is not interested - not her job as it’s not lost or causing a nuisance!

RSPCA say as long as he has shelter and water it’s ok.

He’s been outside all this time during all the heatwaves and winter.

I want to rescue him and give him a home and love and the life he deserves.

What can I do?

Yuck. That’s so scummy. The poor thing. I can’t believe the RSPCA is so relaxed about it :-(. Bolt cutters on the fence?

namechangeformeeee · 31/07/2026 23:03

Poor thing - I second that, bolt cutters when the neighbour is out and then rehome him with a trusted family member of yours.

if you don’t want to do that - offer to pay the neighbour for the dog? He obviously doesn’t care much about the poor thing so may happily take some money for him

I’d love to do that but think it would be classed as theft. I’m so upset for him.
I guess it’s not bad enough for publicity for the RSPCA…

I may or may not have a dog that used to be in a similar situation.

I… liberated her. Nothing happened but it made me anxious for a while.

caringcarer · 31/07/2026 23:05

Poor thing. Pointless having a dog and locking it away in garden all the time. I hope the dog gets enough water and has shelter.

longtompot · 31/07/2026 23:07

Oh that poor dog! Springers need lots of mental games otherwise they get stressed. They don't need lots of walks to calm them down, though they enjoy them of course. I wonder if the neighbour has got overwhelmed with the amount of work that is involved in having a spaniel, especially a springer? Doesn't excuse the mess though. Are you able to ask them if they wanted to rehome their dog to you?

DoodleSquad · 31/07/2026 23:18

We don’t talk to them due to previous issues. I feel so bad for the dog. We have no family members that could take him even if I did steal him. I need to show him love.

I’ll take him if you’re in the north!

This makes me so so sad. I can't bear seeing animals suffering. Please cut him out of there and give him to a rescue. Please.

Ashleigh1969 · 31/07/2026 23:35

Please someone help and take this dog in!

Was it directly next door? They obviously noticed. Nothing said? Hypothetically of course?

Ask them: they may be relived. Say you understand how much of a hard life it can be looking after a gdog. make it sound not-judgemental and as is you totally get it and they must be so busy but you have loads of free time. Could you take him off their hands/

namechangeformeeee · 01/08/2026 17:32

Yeah you have to do something, you wouldn’t be able to live with yourself if you didn’t! You’re so kind for caring x

Where in East Anglia?

Seymour5 · 01/08/2026 18:05

Try contacting the nearest dog rescue centre and telling them how the dog is neglected.

Oh I can believe it. I reported a husky that spent its day circling the owners bed. Never gor taken for a walk, no interaction whatsoever with anyone, and they gave the same response OP got. Its criminal. Dogs need exercise as socialisation as much as they need food and water.

Poor mite. I agree it's awful and that no dog should be kept like that, it's incredibly cruel and that dog must have a miserable existence. But to be fair to the RSPCA I suspect their hands are tied because of legislation, and what counts as cruelty and under what limited circumstances they can ask police to seize an animal. I suspect they often must feel as powerless and angry as posters here. I feel policticians should be doing more to legislate on animal welfare which would then enable the RSPCA and police to step in more.

Are you a dog owner yourself? Would you be able to look after him if they agreed to sell him?

We have 2 dogs ourselves. We would love to take him in. However, we are concerned on what issues he may have with not being walked and literally living in a 6’x4’ prison since they got him. We have never even heard him bark. I just need to let him see some love and that someone cares

How did you manage to get that close to him? Are you able to access his garden?

As already mentioned, I think the best thing to do would be to contact a spaniel rescue. They might approach your neighbours themselves. Also, the rescues often have contacts at the RSPCA and will take more notice of them.

MeridaBrave · 02/08/2026 21:40

Offer to walk him? At least that way he’ll get a walk each day.
