Breeder turned us down

Spoken to a breeder last night about pups due later this year. Was recommended by a friend.i though it was going well but breeder said no. Said he don’t sell to people with children. DC are 10 and 4. Dog savvy.

i know the breeder doesn’t have to sell to us, but I’m really upset. Is it worth trying again? What do I do?

First dog and you have decided on a cocker spaniel. Sorry but this is really a silly choice for someone with a 4 year old. It's hard enough to train a dog without a 4 year old in the mix and you can never supervise properly. It sounds like you just like the look of them and that's all. This is the wrong reasoning and makes me very concerned. What about 'cocker rage' this is a very real condition that needs to be thought about too. Please just leave it until your 4 year old is more responsible.

Please read her follow up posts to see how very wrong you are.

I'll happily admit that I do like the look of them. My current dog makes my heart sing just to look at her -- the eyes, the streamlined form, the bounce, the silkiness and the silliness.

But I picked a breed that fitted my lifestyle first.

You could try reading all of the OP's posts...

FYI, 'cocker rage' is actually 'idiopathic rage syndrome' its very rare and can occur in any dog (or indeed any animal) and is documented in other breeds.

Most owner reported cases of 'cocker rage' are no such thing - as a behaviourist I have seen 1 in 20+ years (dog was flipping out and attacking inanimate objects, whatever happened to be within a certain range, without any warning!) - most of my canine vet friends have never seen a case. It really is that rare.

There are a million other things to consider before idiopathic rage, when getting a dog. The OP is indeed considering those things.

Indeed. Cocker rage, as a colloquialism is a very unusual occurrence but my friend happened to have one that developed it. Her and her husband were terrified of the dog and sadly it had to be put down, after seeing three vets to make sure there was no chance for it. Very sad. I hope whatever dog she gets has a full and happy life.

Adopt a shelter dog,

Maybe read the full thread. This has already been suggested about four thousand times.

As it always is - often with no regard to why to op doesn’t want to rescue…

And why shelters are as unlikely as the breeder here to place a puppy or any dog tbh with a family with a 4 year old.

It was a cocker spaniel. First call to register our interest. Would be a first dog for our family.

He said cockers end up in rescues because of bites on children and he didn’t wanna risk his dogs. Not rude or aggressive.

Just upset as its hard to find a good breeder with health tests, not overbred. Is it unreasonable to ring again today and make our case?

Listen to the breeder. He/she sounds VERY responsible. Tbh if there were more breeders like that there would be fewer puppies/young dogs abandoned in rescue/rehome centres.
If you grew up around dogs you know they can be v nippy especially when pups. Only the most savvy, calm and empathetic kids can deal with that. It's not a puppy's fault if and when they bite.
Puppies are babies with very sharp teeth, not cuddly toys. And if I was the breeder and you rang up to 'plead your case' I'd find my heckles going right up.
