If you didn’t have you dog…

…what breed would you have?

Just that. If you could never have another (insert your dogs breed) again, what breed would you go for instead?

I was talking to a friend about this on our walk - she has a Collie, but if she couldn’t have one then she’d have a Bernese! Just made laugh as it seemed such an odd choice to go from a Collie to a Bernese.

I’ll go first; if I didn’t have Goldies I’d have an Afghan Hound.

I’ve got a lurcher and a poodle cross but I love golden retrievers or big shaggy hounds.

I don’t think I’d have another dog, too much responsibility!

Mybeautifuldogs · 31/01/2025 09:47

I have a St Bernard and a Yorkshire Terrier.

If I didn't I would love a Newfoundland and a Brussels Griffon (actually might even happen yet 🤣).

Coffeeishot · 31/01/2025 09:49

I have a spaniel who's fab I love great Danes though I've been obsessed by them from childhood I couldn't have one though.

I currently have a Belgian shepherd; lovely, beautiful dog and very calm for her breed. Super smart. The shedding though, is unbearable. I always said that when the kids were older and I had more time, I was going to get a giant breed; Leonberger or Newfoundland. Fluffy, slobbery, huge. But oh, how I have changed my mind! A complete 180 on that idea now I know I can't cope with the fur of a shepherd.

I fancy a Doberman for my next breed. I've done my research and they tick the boxes for me - big dog, short coat, intelligent, loyal, don't require an excessive amount of exercise.

I’ve had lots of dogs, all big, Labradors, Greyhound and currently have a Golden Retriever, but I saw a woman yesterday who was like Mrs Honeyman from Camberwick Green. She had an array of teeny dogs on leads and I thought maybe I’d go for a small herd of them when I’m older as I don’t fancy hefting a huge floof ball in to the car when I’m in my 70s 😁. Not sure what they were, Coton de Tulear maybe?

Mitzi Daphne and Lulu! 😀

Have a Havanese - and while I'd happily have another one (or 12 😊) I also love Norfolk Terriers. We also have a lab and I know my husband would love another bigger dog but for various reasons, smaller is better for us. Our Havanese is everything my husband hates in a dog (barky, reactive) but he also says she's the funniest most loving dog he's ever met and his soulmate (some offence taken to this btw!).

For a previous poster, Havanese are similar to Coton de Tular.

FastFood · 31/01/2025 10:25

I have an English toy terrier and I would happily have a whippet, an Italian greyhound or a Manchester terrier. I love them skinny apparently.

Noodge · 31/01/2025 10:27

That's a bit of a weird combination 🤣 sounds fun though.

I have a cross husky/mal/timberwolf who was a complete accident after I hand reared her for a dodgy breeder..it was either that or she died as mum rejected her. Ended up too attached to give back!

I'd love a newfoundland. Writing that is making me very sad, mine is 9 now and we're so bonded (I'm single and childless) that my world will be devastated if anything happens to her.

Hedgesgalore · 31/01/2025 10:33

I have a Scottish Terrier (black). I'd love to have a wheaten coloured Scottish Terrier as our second dog but not really in a position to have two atm.

I like Welsh Terriers and Dandie Dinmonts BUT I know I want our next dog to less groomer reliant so I need a rethink.

We've tickets for Crufts terrier day, hoping to find my next breed, definitely a terrier though.

muddyford · 31/01/2025 10:49

I have a Labrador and an ESS. If I couldn't have those I would have a wire-haired viszla.

JustAskingThisQ · 31/01/2025 10:50

Current dog isn't an issue. We don't have the lifestyle to have some breeds we would want to have at the moment.

SirChenjins · 31/01/2025 10:53

If I didn't have our crazy cockapoo I'd have either a greyhound (I like the idea of some calmness) or a cairn terrier (and I'd call it Terry after Toto who is my favourite dog film star).

CriticalOverthinking · 31/01/2025 11:03

I have a lab, absolutely adore her, brilliant with small dc and barely barks. Maybe a little too friendly 😬
But if I couldn't have a lab I'd have a Samoyed. Big fluffy cloud, Teflon fur and super loving.

Also considered golden retriever, German shepherd or St Bernard.

Brooomhilda · 31/01/2025 11:05

We have a jack russell chihuahua cross and once his time has come we'll go for a teacup chihuahua. Doesn't sound that different but it is!

tabulahrasa · 31/01/2025 11:16

I have a mutt and a collie

I’d have a Rottweiler given free choice, I’ve owned one, fostered one and known others, they’re great. So trainable and really fun dogs to own.

But finding a breeder who does all the health tests is like finding hens teeth and finding a rescue one that can live with other animals is just as hard and I have a cat, so we ended up with the mutt, the collie was my DP’s choice.

Toucanfusingforme · 31/01/2025 11:33

Our last dog was a golden retriever, and I adore retrievers. But my fantasy dog would be a Newfoundland, a Bernese or an Afghan Hound. Not sure my DH would be too happy though ………😁

Glitchymn1 · 31/01/2025 11:45

I have a lab, no dog will ever compare to him. He’s 14 now, not doing so good with his mobility.

If I get another, he/she will be a staffie or staff cross rescue. Bit worried about the separation anxiety though.

tinseltitss · 31/01/2025 12:04

I currently have a Yorkshire Terrier but have always had Jack Russell's so would love another one of those, or a Corgi.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 31/01/2025 12:06

I've got a Chihuahua but if i didn't I'd have a staffy

RaraRachael · 31/01/2025 12:07

I'd have a retired greyhound. My son has one and he's just so adorable. No need for long walks and just lazes around the house all day.

EmmaMaria · 31/01/2025 12:14

I was faced with this choice a few years ago. I had a Border Collie, knew my disability would get worse, probably needed a service dog...considered every breed under the sun. Ended up with... yes, a Border Collie. Always fancied an Irish Wolfhound. But would probably end up with a Border Collie!

DominoRules · 31/01/2025 12:16

I’ve got a Springer and am pretty hooked on spaniels now. But if I couldn’t have them I do love the look of a Beagle!

DrNowt · 31/01/2025 12:28

I've got two glorious mutts, one is basically like a small wolf and used to be feral, one is a cross between a Spanish podenco and some sort of terrier. They're brilliant, but haven't been an easy ride!
I think if I got a breed I would have a smooth collie. Somebody suggested them on another thread here and they seem like a very underrated, big, very dog-shaped and lovely active pet. Thanks whoever that was!

TaylorSwish · 31/01/2025 12:32

A boxer. I love their faces and they always look happy.
