If you didn’t have you dog…

…what breed would you have?

Just that. If you could never have another (insert your dogs breed) again, what breed would you go for instead?

I was talking to a friend about this on our walk - she has a Collie, but if she couldn’t have one then she’d have a Bernese! Just made laugh as it seemed such an odd choice to go from a Collie to a Bernese.

I’ll go first; if I didn’t have Goldies I’d have an Afghan Hound.

Love this thread! I have an Alaskan Malamute just now and would choose a Samoyed if I couldn’t have another. If I had the space I’d actually get one now, I just love them.

MySweetGeorgina · 31/01/2025 12:57

If I could not have my deerhounds, I’d have wolfhounds or greyhounds 😁

Dogaredabomb · 31/01/2025 13:00

I love Jack Russells they're just lovely cheeky bastards who make me laugh. I think Malties are incredibly sweet and greyhounds have lovely natures. I need some naughtiness in a dog though. I used to have a cairn who was so manipulative that I found it hilarious.

unsync · 31/01/2025 13:12

I had a Staffie. I'd have another in a heartbeat if my current circumstances allowed. I do quite fancy a little dog though, a Pom or Long Haired Chi. I've decided that when I'm able, I shall foster first though.

stargirl1701 · 31/01/2025 13:20

If I didn't have a pedigree working Lab, I would have a rescued Cavalier King Charles.

Prancingponies · 31/01/2025 13:22

Currently have a chihuahua cross whippet, a samoyed and an italian greyhound cross JRT. Phew. Which are quite a handful in their own special ways.
Husband wants more Sammy's down the line.

But my dream dog is a collie.

Unluckycat1 · 31/01/2025 13:22

I've got a mongrel, probably saluki, collie, gsd. It upsets me that I'll never be able to have another quite like her. Though she had a bloody strong prey drive that could do with being dialled down a notch.

Fantasy dog, I'd choose a rough collie. In part because I find them so beautiful, but also they sound like they have a similar personality to my girl, gentle, loyal and yet a bit independent too. And they're supposed to be athletic, though I do wonder if they're happy being quite so hairy. And they have the same sort of soulful slightly sad face my girl does <3

Im a spaniel person and id really like a springer, or a clumber spaniel, or an Irish water spaniel... or a Brittany.

Away from the spaniels I'd love a border terrier

Pastit12 · 31/01/2025 13:24

we had a beagle and although he was hard to train especially recall I still really miss him. I’ve always fancied a retired greyhound. They are supposed to be really chilled not sure how how much exercise they need though.

CharliePoppins · 31/01/2025 13:26

I don't have a dog, but I love the look of:

A brussels griffon - saw one at crufts and fell in love with their silly face - although wouldn't get one due to breathing issues

Golden retriever - feels like the perfect family dog

A welsh corgi - cute and compact

EdithStourton · 31/01/2025 13:29

I've had two of the HPR breeds.
I'd just get a different one - lots to choose from. Probably a Braque Francais.

I love the HPR mindset. They can be immensely hard work, but nothing beats watching them hunt, but at the same time as being prey-driven loons, they are incredibly affectionate with the family.

Hoppinggreen · 31/01/2025 13:40

I was torn between a Toller and a Goldie but I have always had Goldies so I opted for one.
I would still love a Toller though but I won't be getting any more pets now

ACynicalDad · 31/01/2025 14:28

I have a little labradoodle but would love a bernadoodle and a bigger house and garden for them.

CanIinterestyouinasarcasticcomment · 31/01/2025 14:37

I have a Samoyed, my first ever dog, who is 8 months old, but if I didn't have her, I think I'd go German Shepherd.

2025willbemytime · 31/01/2025 14:41

I have a golden retriever but I quite fancy a Yorkshire terrier. Cute, cheeky and pick up able.

Fancytrike · 31/01/2025 14:43

Labrador - my first dog was a lab.
I now have a pointer. I don’t know what’s hit me. 😂

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 31/01/2025 15:10

I have a labrador but I'd get a Great Dane or possibly a rescue greyhound. Great Dane is a favourite for a long time but you need serious amounts of space to house them comfortably. They are so chilled and gorgeous though

LandSharksAnonymous · 31/01/2025 15:12

I am loving how many people’s ‘other’ dog would be something drastically different in size to their current one!

I’ve spent most of the day researching Bernese…and I may now change my mind from Afghan to Bernese - it’s just the eyes, they’re so beautiful. 😍

We went to puppy classes with a Bernese she was very cute when the pups got free play she would clump about with her giant puppy paws.

CMOTDibbler · 31/01/2025 15:33

I have lurchers atm. I would have a Doberman (mildly cheating on this as ddog2 is part dobie) if I could find one without heart issues. More realistically a whippet, or a saluki if I could cope with the drama

hattie43 · 31/01/2025 15:35

Bullmastiff every day for me but I'd also like a dogue de Bordeaux, a boerboel and a rottie .

I like the big chunk monkeys .

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 31/01/2025 15:36

If I didn't have a dachshund then I'd have a Dalmatian.

Dazedandconfusedma · 31/01/2025 15:39

I have a wonderful retired greyhound, laziest most docile beast of them all.

one day, if I ever live in a much bigger house, I would absolutely love to have a Irish wolfhound.

i used to always see a little lady who looked (& dressed) like sally Hawkins in Paddington, walking her giant Irish wolfhound around the local park, and it just made me really really want one

CatsBalls · 31/01/2025 15:41

If I didn’t have goldens I’d have a NSDTR

Mardyybum · 31/01/2025 15:43

If I didn’t have my Dalmatian I’d have a working cocker spaniel or an English pointer
