If you didn’t have you dog…

…what breed would you have?

Just that. If you could never have another (insert your dogs breed) again, what breed would you go for instead?

I was talking to a friend about this on our walk - she has a Collie, but if she couldn’t have one then she’d have a Bernese! Just made laugh as it seemed such an odd choice to go from a Collie to a Bernese.

I’ll go first; if I didn’t have Goldies I’d have an Afghan Hound.

We have a working lab (who’s never done a day’s work in his life!) but if I reeeeally couldn’t have another, I think I’d have a Doberman too. Our dog has a Doberman for a friend and he’s lovely!

biscuitsandbooks · 31/01/2025 15:56

We have a beagle.

I'd either go for a mini poodle, a lab or a golden retriever, I think.

Titasaducksarse · 31/01/2025 16:04

I've got a miniature schnauzer. If I didn't have him I'd have a giant schnauzer or a wire/long haired pointer.
Quite like the wired haired dachshunds ...not the mini ones, the proper size.

mrstambourinewoman · 31/01/2025 16:37

St bernard . We have a border collie but I've adored St Bernards since I watched Beethoven as a child

MissyB1 · 31/01/2025 16:46

I also have a mini schnauzer, I like Yorkshire terriers or border terriers.

NessaSmith · 31/01/2025 16:48

If I didn't have mini poodles, I'd have a Labrador or Golden Retriever.

Offredismysister · 31/01/2025 16:53

I’ve got a spaniel & have had a dobermann.
I’d go Vizla or Mastiff.

hiredandsqueak · 31/01/2025 16:53

We have a rescue Lhasa Apso, I would love a poodle. I don't think we will have another dog though.

If I didn't have our crazy cockapoo I'd have either a greyhound (I like the idea of some calmness) or a cairn terrier (and I'd call it Terry after Toto who is my favourite dog film star).

I've got a cairn, and a golden retriever! She looks at lot like Terry.

Labrador - my first dog was a lab.
I now have a pointer. I don’t know what’s hit me. 😂

I bet you don't! 😂

Darklane · 31/01/2025 17:45

I have Skye Terriers if I didn’t have those I’d have a smooth coated chihuahua then I wouldn’t have to spend all my time grooming.

abracadabra1980 · 31/01/2025 17:58

Great thread!
Newfoundland, Labrador pup and a Pug. All tick box breeds for me.
I'd love a German Shepherd but I know I'm not the right type of owner for one. So possibly a Border Terrier as I'm not getting any younger.

Cavalierchaos · 31/01/2025 18:48

I have a cavalier king Charles spaniel but would try a havanese/Maltese/Lhasa apso/shih Tzu.

teapotfullofsquash · 31/01/2025 18:56

I have a staffie now who is fab, but even though I say I wouldn't get another dog, I'd like either a golden retriever or a border collie.

OneDenimRobin · 31/01/2025 19:15

If I didn’t have my dog, I’d get a rescue dog. If I could magic up the ideal rescue dog, they’d be at least 2 years old, enjoy running on lead and sprawling on the sofa, be short haired and 15-22kg. I’m fond of (naturally) pointy ears on dogs so that would be a bonus.

daffodilandtulip · 31/01/2025 19:19

I've got a whippet. I adore her but I really do need a little less needy breed next time!

Enko · 31/01/2025 19:28

We have a Basset Hound would go with a wire haired dashhound or a Corgi

HailtotheBop · 31/01/2025 19:29

I've always had calm, retired racing greyhounds until we adopted a lively rescued galgo (Spanish greyhound) last year. Absolutely love hounds and their soulful, long faces. If I was to have another breed of dog, I think I'd go for a Labrador because they're so beautiful, intelligent and fun. Long walks though!

Pharaoh Hound? Pointy ears, lots of exercise, really affectionate. Not that I am trying to force breeds on people!

Today has sent me into a bit of a google hole on all things unusual dog breeds.

I have Goldens but I'd love a Standard Poodle.

OneDenimRobin · 31/01/2025 22:17

The pharaoh hound is a good call. If I were picking a breed, I’d probably go for the very similar Spanish dogs, pondencos.

Scutterbug · 31/01/2025 22:18

I’ve a labradoodle but would have a Newfoundland I think!

Abc1weabc1 · 01/02/2025 01:26

I've only ever had Staffords, but I would be tempted by a border terrier.

Enya321 · 01/02/2025 01:29

A terrier or any other cute small dog that doesn’t require much walking

RickiRaccoon · 01/02/2025 01:48

I had 2 griffons but lost the 13yo one recently. I'd maybe get a Cavalier King Charles -- a bit more robust for my toddlers kids but still smaller.

I love so many breeds though: mastiffs, English bulldogs, Chihuahuas, bull terriers, pekingese
