If you didn’t have you dog…

…what breed would you have?

Just that. If you could never have another (insert your dogs breed) again, what breed would you go for instead?

I was talking to a friend about this on our walk - she has a Collie, but if she couldn’t have one then she’d have a Bernese! Just made laugh as it seemed such an odd choice to go from a Collie to a Bernese.

I’ll go first; if I didn’t have Goldies I’d have an Afghan Hound.

I currently have a Belgian shepherd; lovely, beautiful dog and very calm for her breed. Super smart. The shedding though, is unbearable. I always said that when the kids were older and I had more time, I was going to get a giant breed; Leonberger or Newfoundland. Fluffy, slobbery, huge. But oh, how I have changed my mind! A complete 180 on that idea now I know I can't cope with the fur of a shepherd.

I fancy a Doberman for my next breed. I've done my research and they tick the boxes for me - big dog, short coat, intelligent, loyal, don't require an excessive amount of exercise.

Strangely my leonberger sheds way less than my German shepherd!

The mud though is something else.

I'm from a family of labrador owners.

I'm rather fond of corgis. I like their size.

I love Jack Russells they're just lovely cheeky bastards who make me laugh. I think Malties are incredibly sweet and greyhounds have lovely natures. I need some naughtiness in a dog though. I used to have a cairn who was so manipulative that I found it hilarious.

I couldnt have wrote this better. I always say who wants a well behaved dog
Our JRT was mensa level intelligence.

I would go for 2 x Corgis called Charles and Diana

FrothyCothy · 01/02/2025 08:38

We have a Staffie at the moment who we adore but I love the personality of pugs - only problem is yapping dogs send my teeth on edge so would need to be not a yapper! We fostered one briefly who spent half her day yapping when she wasn’t being a total clown/diva. Big personalities in small packages.

Having said that though in reality when we no longer have our luscious lump we’d probably foster senior Staffies. There are just so many of them needing a home. Cuddle monsters who don’t need too much exercise.

piscofrisco · 01/02/2025 08:54

If time, money and space were no object I would have a Dalmatian.
As it is, following our current two JRT's and a mini Daschund I would probably go for a miniature schnauzer or a Cairns terrier if choosing, but in all likelihood will get a rescue.

Chickenwing2 · 01/02/2025 09:01

I have a golden retriever.

I applied to rescue a Rottweiler, but was rejected as have no experience of the breed.

I also considered a boxer, they are beautiful dogs.

Carouselfish · 01/02/2025 09:08

If I couldn't have a collie I'd have a bouvier de flandres, so I'm with your friend.

Dearg · 01/02/2025 09:14

I have two labs, and I hate to think of live without them, but if I had to pick other breeds, I could live with a female Border Terrier, or a Whippet, or a male Vizsla.

But basically I love most dogs, so happy to have one with whom I ‘click’ .

Th shedding would be less!!! Imagine being able to go out without goldie fur covering you…

Yes Grin the only downside to goldens is the amount of extra hoovering required. Apart from that I think they are the best breed (although I am obviously biased!)

LibisMum · 01/02/2025 10:06

I've always had retrievers (for 40yrs), Golden and (mainly) Flatcoats, currently have one of each plus a little terrier X and a mini Schnauzer (the latter two were "accidental" acquisitions 😆, they needed a home, mine was available).

I've always, always, wanted a German Shepherd, love the breed, grew up next door to one and she was my best friend growing up. My DSis has had 4. I wouldn't get one these days due to the appalling breeding and conformation - the horrible sloped backs 🤬. I do know a couple of healthy ones locally who are gorgeous dogs (plus one with the bad back and hip issues). I always thought I would get one but not these days. Little dogs - I really fancy a border terrier, packed full of character.

feelingalittlehorse · 01/02/2025 10:09

I’ve got labs, and always had labs but I’ve always wanted a Golden retriever.
Unfortunately, as the dogs come to work with me, the hair is just a bit too much with the Goldies.

The minute I retire, however …. 😁

HoraceCope · 01/02/2025 10:11

spaniels look very appealing as do retrievers
but expensive

i have always had jack russells

HoraceCope · 01/02/2025 10:14

in reality though i would stick with a jack Russell

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 01/02/2025 10:47

I have always wanted a staffie just house hippos. there are some on the internet very spoilt love seeing pics of them in jimjams for bedtime!
i would love a jrt they are such characters i miss my old one so much and probably another chihuahua
i did at one time want a Newfoundland but the dribble put me off! maybe too a greyhound fostered them years ago they are such gentle creatures

Lovemyassistancedog · 01/02/2025 11:06

You've really made me stop and think. I adore my show cocker spaniel and will stick with that breed. But if I had to choose another...and that's where my thinking stopped.

I'd love to do agility with a border collie but I don't think I'd be able to meet their needs outside of class.

I adore golden retrievers but now prefer the smaller cocker spaniel size

I love lots of breeds that have known health issues and so would reluctantly pass on those.

Guess I'll have to stick to my beloved cockers after all. For the PP who said they like a bit of naughtiness and character, I agree and cocker spaniels definitely fit the bill!

HoraceCope · 01/02/2025 11:13

actually perhaps a pointer if i really couldnt have a jack russell

FortunateCatsGlugDaquirisAllEveningBlindly · 01/02/2025 11:16

Where we used to live (checks to see current boy can’t see me typing….) I walked our previous dog along by a canal. There was a lady who used to walk a whole pack of Irish Wolfhounds. Another local guy had one, he just had the one, Daisy and I and Spencer and I bumped into them. It was one of the few dogs Spencer liked.
The pack were a bit daunting 😳
I would have a Wolfie.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 01/02/2025 11:18

Have an old lady lab and a dickhead cockapoo.

Would love a Spanish water dog

Elphame · 01/02/2025 11:23

I have Welsh Terriers. I’ve always had Welshies and can’t imagine having any other. They are such characters

I feel like this about my miniature poodles 😄

They're just perfection to me.

Ylvamoon · 01/02/2025 14:31

I have Tibetan Terriers but if I couldn't have one ever again I would probably go for a Saluki.

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 01/02/2025 16:30

I've always had collies and other herding dogs. But I'd love to have a springer spaniel or a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever. Or possibly both.

okydokethen · 01/02/2025 17:02

I have Dachshunds and I'd love a pom
