Puppy changed mind 😭

After saving months for a £2000 Maltipoo I’m getting cold feet. Come here for different prospectives so please don’t hate me but tell me the truth, as I feel like a horrendous person..

Puppy is from a breeder, saw her at a week, lovely put deposit down. Very excited…
Puppy is 4 weeks old and still has the pinkest nose I have ever seen, I have googled the breed with pink noses and as shallow as I am it wasn’t something I really wanted and after saving month for a particular breed feeling a little upset. Mainly upset with my self that it bothers me.

I’m a previous dog owner last dog passed away earlier this year at 15. Dogs are fantastic and hard work, have a family and wanted like our previous dog to do everything together but worried about the amount of sun the dog will take before getting burned..

Im not fussed about liver colour, some pink etc. This is pig pink, dog is white too….

I know this is what you get for a cross breeds. I feel so many people have cross breeds and it’s not happened to them.
He is a beautiful put, but I’m concerned to get over the pig nose esp as his not cheap.

Tell breeder your circumstances have changed. They will still sell this pup, prob have waiting list.

£2k lot of money to spend if not 100% happy.

just walk away. No guilt.

Nemasu · 20/10/2024 13:18

So much wrong with the OPs thinking about this pup I don't even know where to begin

Umm, this has to be a wind-up, surely.

This. Anyone who no longer wants to get a dog because of how it looks can’t be for real.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 12:42

@Poodlemania i have honestly been through a mix of emotions. At one point the thought of a new dog ever I couldn’t stand, then the last few months, I have felt “dog broody”. We saw the dog and put the deposit on and was so excited, been looking at training videos bought training books even bought some bits. However this last week I have felt really anxious and not sure if it’s me not feeling ready. Now. So gutted. Our dog was such a big part of our lives and the most gorgeous thing (to me I should imagine).
Also not knowing the dogs personality is hard, I feel I have so many what if questions in my mind.

So you got to the crux of the issue u are anxious about having dog so sack it off. Ask if you can get deposit back ans explain why as a good breeder wouldn't want their puppy to go to someone unsure if ut

Timble · 20/10/2024 13:21

I honestly think if something like nose colour is the most important thing to you then you probably shouldn’t be getting a dog at all.

Hunnymonster1 · 20/10/2024 13:23

Also, if you were bothered about personality of a dog, you could have asked the breeder if you could have visited the puppy throughout the situation because it might be that maybe somebody else hasn't bought all the puppies and you could have swapped for another one

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 20/10/2024 13:23

Quite frankly, you shouldn't be getting a dog. You sound shallow, grossly uneducated in what dog ownership is actually like and like this is all one big joke.

Ownership of a living, breathing creature is not a joke - it is a responsibility.

It almost certainly won't be hypoallergenic (many aren't and mongrel breeding like this is an attempt to con idiots into paying well beyond market value for mongrels that are usually not up to the standards of their pedigree counterparts). What are you doing to do if it's not? Dump it? Get a new one?

Dogs noses can change at any time. My Golden has developed 'snow nose' - I'm certainly not going to love him any less or think he is any less beautiful because of it.

Don't get a dog. You're not the right fit to have a pet. Dogs are worth more than being some designer accessory to fill a 'gap' you think you have.

Separately, if you had to save for months to afford £2K, then tbh I have no idea how you'll afford the frankly extortionate vet and grooming bills these days. I don't mean that nastily. But to keep that dog in good condition (given the various health issues with both breeds of dog you have chosen and the high grooming needs) you'll looking at probably £200 a month maintenance.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 13:23

@Witchyandtwitchy we have picked the dog for our needs.
ie- a 30-40 min walk a day should be enough
-doesn't shred
-enjoys being with family
-easy to train
-small size
that’s why we went with this breed it wasn’t all looks. Obviously the fact to me I like the look of them was a pro.
Obviously none of the above is promised.
this post doesn’t need to make you angry. Or
swear. I’m surprised by all the cockapoo owners that’s don’t choose the dog by looks but I suppose that’s because I think they are gorgeous 🤣.

All I read was £2000 for a dog and I stopped sorry ... when there are so many beautiful dogs in shelters needing homes breaks my heart

charlieinthehaystack · 20/10/2024 13:25

you dont want the pup get a rescue for a lot less money and give the rest to an animal charity

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 13:27

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone actually owned a dog for 15 years afforded all bills and looked after her really well for all them years. You’re quite judgemental I never said I would dump a dog and that’s why I’m thinking of this now.
snow nose is nothing like this littles ones nose. I have also said further up this maybe more the case I’m not ready to move on, from my old dog so my brain has obsessed about something on the pup.

@HappiestSleeping i don’t actually know. It started I loved the look and personalities of cockapoo I have met. Then further research found Maltipoo to be a better match. However loads of people have cockapoos?

Loads of people take drugs, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend that either. Just because loads of people do a thing doesn't make it a good thing to do.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 13:29

@charlieinthehaystack it’s actually really difficult to get a rescue here. My older 3 are all over 9 so fine but also have a 3 year old and they won’t give dogs to people with young kids. Also rspca (before our youngest was born) told us to give up as such a big waiting list 🤦🏼‍♀️. Independant seem better.

OP posts:
Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 13:31

@HappiestSleeping no but surely I’m not the only person to pick a bread on dog that fits them and looks… like looks have never come into it with anyone. People who by Dalmatian’s do because they fit their needs not a added extra of liking their spots..

Thanks. I suppose I have not seen the dogs personality yet so it’s making it difficult to only see looks…
we have had rescues before and nearly got a rescue a few years ago. Not at one point was I bothered about looks. I suppose it’s because I had this idea in my mind of a teddy bear for months and now I need to change that.
i actually have 3 disabled children so get you can’t always choose….
I suppose I wanted to feel in control about a choice, I didn’t care about colour of the dog but just would of liked that bear look…
Im also worried about the sun as dog is pink all over, I know her nose I will have to sun cream up but will her body be ok

DO NOT get a dog.

Especially not with three children.

If the pink nose bothers you {I like a black nose personally as we had a Whippet who had a white stripe {dark nose} and he needed sun block on his stripe in hot weather.
£2,000 for a mongrel is insanity.

Back out NOW and lose the deposit.

I wanted a big black male greyhound, and the Dog's home paired me with a ginger broken~coated tiny skeletal female Lurcher puppy - I took her, and she was fantastic!

But she was £100 in today's money.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 20/10/2024 13:35

I mean this is the doghouse topic so people go into a thread prepared to judge.

But the reality is that if you just don’t take to a puppy then it’s as simple as don’t buy one.

If people decide to go with a litter and then when they go to pick the puppy don’t see one that does it for them should they be obliged to pick one just because.

everyone picks out the puppy they want based on the traits they like. If they’ve opted for a certain breed then of course they pick the dog based on looks i.e. which one they like the look of the most/is the cutest etc. Anyone who says differently is lying.

As for the poster telling you never to get another pet. Do grow up. OP hasn’t actually got the puppy yet, so she’s not rehired it, she’s just not parted with two grand for a dog she’s not sure about.

Let's go through your list:

  • 30-40 minutes may not be anywhere near enough if the poodle element is stronger - think more like 2 hours worst case
  • doesn't shed, but Maltese has a higher maintenance coat which mats more easily, so less shedding but potentially more maintenance
  • I'll give you sociability however poodles can be wary of strangers
  • easy to train - unless it has the Maltese streak as they are low on the dog intelligence rankings
  • small size depending on the poodle that's been bred in

You could very well end up with a large, dopey, difficult to train, high maintenance coated dog that needs a lot of exercise and doesn't like anyone coming into your house.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 13:35

@oakleaffy all my kids are use to a dog. We had a dog for 15 years. Hard work but worth it. She came on all holidays with us, days out etc.

@AutumnLeaves24 i can’t as have a 3 year old. None give when you have a little one, reason we stopped looking. Also needs to hyperallengic.

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. What will you do if one of your children is allergic? Honestly are you sure its a good idea for you to have a dog at all at this point in your life? You want control but in reality the only control you will have is what it looks like which to me, as a dog owner who can't have another one because reasons, is the very least part of the dog.

You haven't picked a dog that fits your needs though. Per my post above, you've picked one you like the look of that might meet your needs. It might not.

People picking pure bred dogs have a much better chance than you do, and the looks are an added bonus.

Krumblina · 20/10/2024 13:37

Sounds like a dog would add a lot of stress. Is that what's good for the dog? A puppy is hard work and you have 3 kids with additional needs.
Plus it honestly is shocking you don't want it based on it's colour. What is the purpose of this animal to you? What are offering it?

It's difficult to get a rescued dog because of young children.

Most responsible rescues don't place their dogs with multi child houses and certainly not 3 yrs old -kids can be rough with dogs- it's not fair on the dog, or child if the dog bites.

Dogs aren't toys, and young kids can't help themselves.

My friend has four children {Twins} and the youngest were 10 before getting a dog. Oldest 20.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 13:41

@NotOneOfTheInCrowd thanks. I’m not trying to be awful just work through something without people that know me. I’m not sure if it’s just cold feet because of the dog we lost.
Im trying to work things out as the dog is more important than money, I would rather loose the deposit then the pup end up in a rescue center which I don’t think I ever would do. I know this is a forever thing, it’s a scary decision as I’m well aware I can’t change my mind, I can’t change my mind as once it’s home I would never ever give up on it. I have a few week to which to decide. It’s not like picking a bag as I can’t change my mind, I can’t and wouldn’t take it back…

I struggle to believe that given the way you have acted and what you've said on this thread.

You described the puppy as having a pig nose - that's not the mark of a dog lover, is it?

But regardless of what anyone here says - you're going to press on, eventually, and get a dog that will likely be tormented many your children, ill-trained, under-exercised, poorly kept and genuinely just treated like rubbish. I really feel for your future dog.
