Puppy changed mind 😭

After saving months for a £2000 Maltipoo I’m getting cold feet. Come here for different prospectives so please don’t hate me but tell me the truth, as I feel like a horrendous person..

Puppy is from a breeder, saw her at a week, lovely put deposit down. Very excited…
Puppy is 4 weeks old and still has the pinkest nose I have ever seen, I have googled the breed with pink noses and as shallow as I am it wasn’t something I really wanted and after saving month for a particular breed feeling a little upset. Mainly upset with my self that it bothers me.

I’m a previous dog owner last dog passed away earlier this year at 15. Dogs are fantastic and hard work, have a family and wanted like our previous dog to do everything together but worried about the amount of sun the dog will take before getting burned..

Im not fussed about liver colour, some pink etc. This is pig pink, dog is white too….

I know this is what you get for a cross breeds. I feel so many people have cross breeds and it’s not happened to them.
He is a beautiful put, but I’m concerned to get over the pig nose esp as his not cheap.

Roger Mugford {animal psychologist} said it made his heart sink when people said ''I have a large garden''

Dogs NEED to explore outside of their own gardens.

Maybe if you live in NSW Australia with 2/3,0000 acres of farmland, then you can just about get away with not exercising dog off property, as there would be plenty of new things to occupy the dog, but most dogs love to go on actual ''walks'' with their humans- and with a very young child, this will be difficult.

Most little kids don't like walks in all weathers, and can't walk for long.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 14:03

@HappiestSleeping I don’t know why you think that. I have said all along is this my mind telling me something. Or maybe not ready. It’s easy to judge. We are a family that have always had a dog…. It’s actually hard without her, we miss her we miss the dog walks the companion ship the playing etc the kids to as she was our baby and one of us… we felt ready, researched breeds this seemed a good option.
absolutely pathetic to worry about the nose as I said in my post… so wondering if it’s more, if it’s my way of thinking will this be to much.
actually had rescue dogs before and never bothered me the look. Or is this because we don’t know the dogs personality yet.

I don’t think you’re being shallow OP! We definitely choose animals based on looks as well as other characteristics. Horses for one, but dogs too! This is normal.

Dont get this dog

It does sound like it looks a bit odd - but someone else will buy it and love it. Good to step out now as early as possible. Find another one. And credit to use for making a difficult decision especially when you’re raising three DC with disabilities.

Ps never heard of putting suncream on a dog - surely it would be cruel for their sense of smell?

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 14:04

@oakleaffy but I never said I wouldn’t walk her…

coffeesaveslives · 20/10/2024 14:05

I think you're focusing on the nose because you're not actually ready to get a new puppy.

Some of these posts are insanely harsh imo, but then I shouldn't be surprised - the Doghouse tends to have a very select idea of how you should own a dog, and anyone who doesn't fit in with it that is automatically slated.

@grumpypedestrian don’t have the dog yet, I wouldn’t give the dog back, that’s why I feel I have this week to have a good think. I’m thinking it’s just cold feet and a bit of anxiety but whether there is a big reason for that. I know it’s a big responsibility.
already enquired about dog training classes. Also rural and everyone has dogs, well use to the people here with dogs from my pup before.

If you don't have the puppy yet then now is absolutely the time to decide to back out. Far, far better to do that than a few weeks after you bring her home and then decide you don't want her. Yes, it does sound like you're not ready maybe, rather than the colour being the trigger - almost like you're trying to find a reason to not go ahead.
Not knowing what your contract is, presumably won't get the deposit back, but you can back out prior to final purchase for any reason.
And so can the breeder. A friend got her puppy from a breeder who had refused to hand him over to the original intended buyer when they came to collect him and let slip he'd be going to a day care all day and could they send him straight away? If your breeder is a decent breeder they won't want you to take the puppy if there is any chance you will be returning her in a few weeks.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 20/10/2024 14:06

There are thousands of x breeds and mongrels in rescues - including puppy ones !!!

why would anyone pay that ?

Because for many of us, getting a rescue is damn-near impossible.

SamPoodle123 · 20/10/2024 14:07

Could you not just be honest with the breeder saying you want a multipoo with a black nose? When getting our dog, I specified with the breeder we wanted female, coat type, coat colour, size etc. We put deposit down and waited 6 months for the dog of choice to appear. And, we could not have been happier. She is the perfect dog for us (6 years now).

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 14:07

@QuizzicalJoan either had I until I researched the nose 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️.
thanks, thing is our old pup was a massive help to them, she got them out the house, and they loved playing with her. We were extremely lucky with her, as she just loved us all so much, she was great making her self noticed and she always joined in whether dancing playing hide and seek, just playing with the babies at the time she came to help 😍

£2000 for a crossbreed? No matter what fancy name they give them (cockerpoo, maltipoo, labradoodle etc), they're mutts. I can state that my darling younger cat is part Birman but she's still a mog. It's ridiculous.

coffeesaveslives · 20/10/2024 14:11

It's definitely encouraged if you have a white coated dog, or one with a pink nose/ears. The same goes for cats. They can burn and get skin cancer just like we can, sadly.

Our beagle gets sunscreen put on him in the summer. You can just get unscented wipes from the pets shop that you wipe over them.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 14:12

@SamPoodle123 im totally up for that. I wasn’t sure it was me. 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️. I didn’t expect the nose I’m actually not bothered by the colour of the pup (my opinion). Maybe its a bit like feet, literally hate my own feet and were socks all the time 🤣. Looking at him he looks really cute still, but I googled pictures and was like oh. But then no dog is as good as your dog. When our pup was around I didn’t like any other dogs and my dog was the most gorgeous thing (prob not to others) but now I love every dog I see now I don’t have one 🤣. The pup now looks beautiful. It’s was google imagines that made me worry.
then it hit me whether this was a worry that built from something more deep, or whether it’s because it’s not my pup yet.

"I do think people aren’t being honest when they say looks aren’t important eg I prefer hounds and find flat nosed breeds hideous and fluffy teddy bear dogs awful."

I think its more that its something as daft as the colour of its nose. Plus, not doing any research about it. Took me 10 seconds to see that it can be very common for some puppies to have pink noses that change colour as they get a bit older.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 14:14

@coffeesaveslives that’s good to know.
our previous dog loved the sun, of the door was open she would be out sunbathing literally. And would have to get her in 🤣

OP posts:
Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 14:16

@Megifer actually I have done lots and know about the breeds also I have read that the could should come in within 2 weeks and then fill out…
google says 4 months but the more you look the more you will see normally within 2 weeks some colour would appear.

Yep, ours is the same, so he has sunscreen put on for his own sake Grin

I've seen quite a few beagles get cancer because of their white skin and pink noses sadly, and lots of people aren't really aware of the fact that dogs should be wearing sun protection just like us.

Everyone is different in their preferences and what suits them. We wanted specific colour (basically not white lol....bc white dogs always look dirty w all the mud around and difficult to upkeep). And non shedding coat (did not want to take a chance with allergies having two kids and a third after getting the dog). If you think the dog is cute now, I am sure it will still look cute later. Did you see the parents?

I would voice any concerns to breeder. If you really do not want a pink nose, ask for a dark nose one.

Larrythebloodycat · 20/10/2024 12:12

Why not just get a teddy bear?

Yes, please do. You really don't sound mature enough to look after a puppy.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 14:21

@coffeesaveslives it’s crazy must admit I wasn’t.
our old pup had dementia, and really high care needs the last year was awful, so see her go down hill.
The kids really had to watch her loose herself. 😭. Just wanted some happyness and new memories.
She was soiling and wetting herself, everytime constantly in and out the garden, and then just staring, bathing her and brushing her lots as she would wee and poo in her bed and lay in it. Then getting skin infections due to the bathing (fungal) then bathing her every day with anti fungal meds. It was such a hard. And knowing she was getting worse every day. I suppose having a pup and having that fun again was what I was after, and have completely forgotten why we started looking in the first place ❤️

It sounds like you have your hands full already, and taking on a dog is not for you (at least, at this stage of life). You should leave it and just focus on your DC.

JaneAustensCat · 20/10/2024 14:26

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/10/2024 13:48

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, and all dogs shed both fur and dander.

Some breeds shed far far less and due to coat type/texture don't drop that coat everywhere (it stays stuck to the other fur on the dog and you have to brush it off), however hair grows, hair dies, hair loosens and comes out. All hair does this, there is no way to stop it and it wouldn't be healthy if you could.

Dander (skin and dried saliva) is what triggers most allergies, and all dogs will shed this, again to a greater or lesser degree.

If you have second thoughts about a puppy, for any reason, then back out. Raising a puppy is intense and hard work, trying to raise a puppy you have doubts about or second thoughts about is a lot harder!

As for the price, decent for a super well bred dog who has been put through an early socialisation/habituation/training program like Smart Pup or Puppy Culture... absolute rip off if that puppy is back yard bred simply sticking together two cute breeds the owner happens to have with no health testing, no early socialisation etc, probably left alone hours on end whilst the owner/breeder works (puppies are expensive because it takes a lot of money and time a breeder is not earning a wage elsewhere, to produce...).

OP read this and the post from @Astrabees.

There is no such thing as 'hypoallergenic' dogs. Any dog no matter what the breed types (and you are buying an expensive mongrel NOT a breed) could set your child's asthma off. It's not about the shedding, it's the dander not fur that is the issue and that can vary considerably by dog even within the same breed less along mixes. What will you do if your child reacts badly - sell it on as a secondhand puppy?

Your puppy won't come from genetically tested parents in a bloodline free from the common congenital defects of the breeds. Your puppy could have all sorts of expensive health problems and you have no comeback. Don't think Kennel Club or or local Council registration means anything either, unethical breeders can be registered, it doesn't take much.

Just a few possible health defects :
Maltese: chiari malformation syringomyelia, (a neurological condition that leads to the development of fluid pockets on the spinal cord, which can be very painful and disabling in severe cases). Knee and heart issues.
Poodles: Eye problems including optic nerve hypoplasia and progressive retinal atrophy, Hip problems, blood clotting disorders.

You are also contributing to a massive problem in this country of back yard breeders. How do you even know it's not a puppy farm in disguise? They often have a house as a front, where the mother and puppies are shown to prospective buyers but the breeding takes place far away. Even if it is a local person 'just' breeding the own dogs for profit, it's likely both parents but especially the bitch will be producing multiple litters as often as possible until their poor little bodies are worn out. They'll then be dumped or sold off at a cheap price to some unsuspecting people who get a terrified, unwell, unsocialised dog and so is likely to be given up to a rescue.

You are potentially participating in animal cruelty. This is way bigger than a pink nose (though yes, pinkness in animals means a higher risk of cancer - google it).

Somanyquestions12 · 20/10/2024 14:30

My dog had a bright pink nose when he was born and by the time he was 3 months it was all black. There’s a really good suncream called filtabac that lasts all day if you need a good sunscreen
