Puppy changed mind 😭

After saving months for a £2000 Maltipoo I’m getting cold feet. Come here for different prospectives so please don’t hate me but tell me the truth, as I feel like a horrendous person..

Puppy is from a breeder, saw her at a week, lovely put deposit down. Very excited…
Puppy is 4 weeks old and still has the pinkest nose I have ever seen, I have googled the breed with pink noses and as shallow as I am it wasn’t something I really wanted and after saving month for a particular breed feeling a little upset. Mainly upset with my self that it bothers me.

I’m a previous dog owner last dog passed away earlier this year at 15. Dogs are fantastic and hard work, have a family and wanted like our previous dog to do everything together but worried about the amount of sun the dog will take before getting burned..

Im not fussed about liver colour, some pink etc. This is pig pink, dog is white too….

I know this is what you get for a cross breeds. I feel so many people have cross breeds and it’s not happened to them.
He is a beautiful put, but I’m concerned to get over the pig nose esp as his not cheap.

@Objectrelations thank you. didn’t know that.

You're brave posting this! I think a lot of people, if they were being honest, choose a dog at least partially based on how it looks. When I filled in an application form for my rescue puppy, I knew I wanted a bitch, there were only two, and I went for the one with the beautiful coat and markings (though maybe if I had been able to meet them all I would have made a less shallow choice).

Equally, I would never have either a Maltese or a poodle because I don't find them cute at all, and they can get those awful tear stains.

I do think our aesthetic preferences are a problem though, and are the underlying cause of so many Frankenstein dogs. The best thing we could do for dogs as a whole is try to overcome them and prioritise good health and temperament. If your puppy is healthy and friendly, that's what really matters.

EyeRolling23 · 20/10/2024 12:46

Oh and @Mummy289 there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, poodles do not shed, so less problematic, but again with a cross you don't know what coat type your u will get. Mine doesn't shed at all, my friends' sheds like his cocker spaniel dad 🤷‍♀️

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 12:49

We also did pick this breed as good with children! We picked a havanese last time and again because they are good with kids. She was exceptional with kids tbh . However researching this breed they should be good too. I didn’t want a havanese as that’s what our old pup was. We wanted something small, doesn’t malt, etc. we are use to brushing and grooming :).

I would always choose a dog on personality and not looks. And I don't think you can know at a week old.

As a previous dog owner you know what matters. Is that really why you are having second thoughts?

Is it healthy? What are the parents like, what is its temperament? Is it curious about you? How easy will it be to train? Is the breed good with children?

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 12:51

Maltease and poodle don’t shed, making it a better option…
Cockapoo can shred, due to the spaniel

£2k for a X Breed!!! 😳😳😳
This has got to be a joke post? 🥴

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 12:53

@Unluckycat1 thanks. I think that maybe my issue as I have not met the personality or the pup yet. Something I hadn’t thought about and something that’s hard to see past what our previous pup was like.. they were all sold in a week!

OP posts:
DowntonNabby · 20/10/2024 12:53

Is it usual to have to put down a deposit after only seeing them at a week old? You need to see the dog's personality as much as how it looks. We've just paid the same amount for a pedigree GR and we had three visits before paying the deposit at six weeks. Are you due to go back to see it again before collection?

Wegovypictures · 20/10/2024 12:53

I don't understand how you have picked a specific puppy when you don't know the personality yet - this is a sure sign of a bad backyard breeder

TheBelleOfBelfastCity · 20/10/2024 12:55

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 11:44

@TheBelleOfBelfastCity what suncream do you use? Is hers bright pink, I know liver noses are quite common with that bread, which are lovely in my opinion 🤣.
do you find you have to keep her in when it’s nice?

No, not at all. It’s light pink. Never had any issues re: sunburn, however a dog shouldn’t be out in hot conditions anyway.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 12:55

Where I am must be dog haven as they all go so fast.
Even our previous although she was havanese which is rare.
I do think it’s a shame we don’t know her personally. I did ask if we can visit again and she was like yea a couple of times.
my last dog wasn’t a breeder so it’s all new to me.

OP posts:
Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 12:56

@TheBelleOfBelfastCity I’m super pale I get burnt in April no lie 🤣. For me it don’t need to be hot. So was a concern to how much sun is to much 🤣

OP posts:
mugglewump · 20/10/2024 12:57

I don't know about Maltipoos, but our spanial can't bear the heat, so I wouldn't worry too much about sunburn. If it is hot and sunny, you'll walk the dog before it gets too hot and after the sun starts to set.

muddyford · 20/10/2024 12:58

I would see if you can swap to a puppy you do like. He could go on for 15 years and that's a long time not to like how he looks. But I agree with PPs - breeder sounds dodgy.

DowntonNabby · 20/10/2024 12:58

That's good the breeder is open to you to visiting again. If pup is four weeks old now, this is a good time to go again.

So why not get a well-bred poodle or Maltese rather than a cross? What will a "maltipoo" give you that they won't?

HappiestSleeping · 20/10/2024 13:03

wintersgold · 20/10/2024 12:08

£2k is not excessive or 'obscene' for any dog, regardless of breed - they are living animals and should never be cheap

True, but there are registered pure bred dogs available from quality KC registered breeders for less than that.

And, you can get a mongrel from a rescue centre too.

SabreIsMyFave · 20/10/2024 13:09

WTAF have I just read?! Confused

@Mummy289 Rehome the poor dog. You don't deserve her. And never get another pet!

Winter2020 · 20/10/2024 13:11

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 12:14

@SidekickSylvia see is the same and dont think I would ever walk past one and say aww how cute. However I feel bad choosing now. I assumed people choose the dog they liked tge look of 🤦🏼‍♀️

OP,
As you have not yet met the dog or took it home why would you buy a dog that is not what you want? I find that weird. The dog hasnever met you - it is not attached to you. Let someone buy it that wants it. I assume that you will forfeit your deposit.

HappiestSleeping · 20/10/2024 13:11

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 12:10

@Wishimaywishimight I have done a lot of research into the pink nose and sadly it will need protecting from the sun. Again it’s very pink, not a dark pink.
also why do people buy cockapoo, they are everywhere why do people buy a certain breed if it’s not they prefer a certain look?

People buy 'Cockapoos' and other such designer cross breeds mainly due to ignorance. They are expecting that they will get the features they want / best features of both breeds without understanding that they could be getting the worst features of both breeds. Then you get into the quality of the breeder. I would seriously question whether any breeder of such frankenbreeds is serious, although there will be some with the animal's best interests at heart, it always seems to me that they are cashing in on a craze.

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 13:11

@HappiestSleeping i don’t actually know. It started I loved the look and personalities of cockapoo I have met. Then further research found Maltipoo to be a better match. However loads of people have cockapoos?

NO!! You don’t buy a certain breed because of the way they look!!!
You buy a certain breed because their breed traits fit with your lifestyle. FFS!

Mummy289 · 20/10/2024 13:15

@Winter2020 i did met the dog at a week old. And actually trying to decide that now. I don’t want to mess the pup around. I’m wondering if I’m just not ready and that’s what is causing all this anxiety. As it’s not like me. Ot maybe a shock I just need to get my head around or maybe I just need to see her more and how her personality has developed

In fairness, I think a lot of people do both.

I don't think choosing a dog for looks is a crime - as long as you take into account breed traits and exercise requirements etc. as well. We were deciding between a beagle and spaniel and went for a beagle because they didn't require brushing and grooming and were easier to keep clean.
