Puppy changed mind 😭

After saving months for a £2000 Maltipoo I’m getting cold feet. Come here for different prospectives so please don’t hate me but tell me the truth, as I feel like a horrendous person..

Puppy is from a breeder, saw her at a week, lovely put deposit down. Very excited…
Puppy is 4 weeks old and still has the pinkest nose I have ever seen, I have googled the breed with pink noses and as shallow as I am it wasn’t something I really wanted and after saving month for a particular breed feeling a little upset. Mainly upset with my self that it bothers me.

I’m a previous dog owner last dog passed away earlier this year at 15. Dogs are fantastic and hard work, have a family and wanted like our previous dog to do everything together but worried about the amount of sun the dog will take before getting burned..

Im not fussed about liver colour, some pink etc. This is pig pink, dog is white too….

I know this is what you get for a cross breeds. I feel so many people have cross breeds and it’s not happened to them.
He is a beautiful put, but I’m concerned to get over the pig nose esp as his not cheap.

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone im certainly not saying I’m not worried about the puppy stage..,

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone also with my previous pup, it wasn’t the cooking, washing, cleaning that made me make the hardest decision it was the fact I was having to shut her in the hallway (stair gates not doors) as she woudnt keep nappies on. She couldn’t be with us and had always always been but every time she would just walk in and wee and poo straight away. She still enjoyed walks. But having her separate from us I couldn’t deal with. She was a Velcro dog and it was honesty awful. Not at the end she noticed but I did. Not having her next to me 😢

£2000! Jesus that's a lot.

Op does have a point - if this dog has lighter skin then it may be at a higher risk of sunburn and potential skin cancers. So there may be a knock on effect when it comes to insurance.

You've a very hard choice to make - either you forgo the £400 deposit and go on your way, or you commit to this pup and stump up the extra admin and cost.
Its not a mark of failure to step away now - the dog deserves the owners with the best circumstances and far better you lose a few hundred quid now rather than thousands down the line, with a lot of heartache.

£2000 for a mongrel is ridiculous. I have a breed that I show and occasionally breed from but are mainly our pets and there's no way I'd ever charge £2000 for a puppy and that's KC registered with all the papers. People paying £2000 for a mongrel is just encouraging these ridiculous cross breeds. And no, the nose won't change colour and would defintely be a major fault in either a poodle or a maltese

Packetofcrispsplease · 22/10/2024 08:51

Have you thought about walking away from this particular breeder?
(ok you will lose your deposit but then the breeder can keep the pup and find someone else for her )
Also have you considered a miniature poodle instead of a cross breed ?
We have a wire haired terrier ( I won’t say what particular breed though ) so I have no issues with moulting or triggering my allergies and asthma .
This particular breed are so very appealing so this is our 2nd dog , same breed .
As I get older I feel that I don’t want our next family to be the same breed because they are an absolute handful !
I have a disabled adult child at home too so I have to think carefully about breeds .
So I have done a lot of research and we think our next dog will be a miniature poodle .
You don’t have to have a poodle 🐩 cut ✂️ you can get a teddy or puppy cut then they do look very appealing.
I do think you’re being sensible thinking about this now before getting this pup 🐶

CellophaneFlower · 22/10/2024 09:18

No breed is ‘good with kids.’

Oh come on, I think you know what OP means. There are definitely breeds and cross breeds that are better suited to family homes.

Maltipoos are generally amiable, easy to train dogs. All the ones I've met certainly seem to be this way as well. Some quite yappy though and often prone to separation anxiety which is why they wouldn't be a dog I'd consider. However, again, this is true of many small breed dogs.

ThatWhiteElephant · 22/10/2024 09:21

Timble · 20/10/2024 13:21

I honestly think if something like nose colour is the most important thing to you then you probably shouldn’t be getting a dog at all.

This with bells on!

OP -
Our pup had a black nose, it turned pink at around a year and has stayed pink. We couldn't love her more.

GreenTuftyFlowers · 22/10/2024 10:36

Lord - what a lot of judgemental idiots on this thread.

OP, you sound like a lovely, responsible and experienced dog owner. For what it's worth I think your wobbles are more to do with the fact that you know exactly how much responsibility is involved and want to get it right. Also that you want to give your new dog the best chance of being unconditionally loved as your old dog was.

I don't know whether your new pup is right - can you visit her again and see how you feel? You have choices but don't be hard on yourself, you have enough going on.

THIS.

With lots of bells on. All our dogs were/are mutts.

My husband was absolutely floored when someone called our last dog, Daisy, a springador.

When we are asked what sort of dog we have now we tend to say ‘a muddy one’.

The reverse snobbery and virtue signalling on this thread is insane.

Nobody has the right to tell somebody else what sort of dog they should and should not get.

Only buy a puppy are are 100% sure about. I don't think it's shallow to want your dog to be a certain way if there is something about the breed you specifically like. However paying £2000 for any dog is slightly mad, I know prices have risen, but I do not understand that cost. I bought my dog 3 years ago, the breeder hadn't raised her prices from her previous litter 2 years before.
I managed to find 2 breeders of the dogs I wanted who were both fair prices, some wanted twice the price of those blaming covid etc etc.

Inflated prices will only stop when people stop paying that much for a dog - regardless of breed.

I'd do a little more research on the dogs before making a decision.

Ask the breeder about her worming schedule and what Veterinary wormer she has used and when she has used it, and what schedule you should follow

All dogs are born with worms because of the worm's lifecycle it's impossible to completely eradicate encysted worms in the mother- the eggs pass to puppy via placenta, and then via mother's milk, mother cleans pup's poo and ingests the eggs.

Puppy farm and Back yard breeders can be extremely careless with worming, if at all.

Get puppy checked out by a vet asap.

Pup should also be microchipped before being sold to you.

Mummy289 · 22/10/2024 13:46

@oakleaffy thanks you, pups will be wormed although from memory I think another dosage in needed soon after but I do need to check all this as we are now going ahead.
First vac done, micro chippped, training pack given and health check by vets.

I'd definitely still get a check by your OWN vet, as breeders can hide stuff from you.
Money is their motive, rather than canine health care.

{Although we have had rescue dogs arrive with tapeworm- proglottids wriggling out of pup's bottom..RSPCA home said ''they only treat for Tapeworm when proglottids are seen, as the drug is quite hard on a poorly puppy.

{Pic years ago of first dog {RSPCA home} who had tapeworm- it was 1am and son had day off school next day as he was so tired!..I was a bit surprised to see the worm proglottids.

I knew this would happen, that's why I suggested you visit again 😳😂

It's easy to get fixated on something when they're tiny and before their little characters have started coming through.

Congrats on your new little puppy and please do update this thread with pics if you want to in case I miss them on another thread!

EmeraldIsla · 22/10/2024 14:11

Aesthetics of the dog aside (and I guess we mostly do pick dogs that appeal to us - the trick is to ensure their mental/athletic characteristics fit too) ...

It is tragic that people are STILL queuing up to pay excessive prices to puppy farmers of random marketable crossbreeds. No reputable breeder would let you see a pup as young as you have, nor take a deposit for it.

I'd be worrying more about its physical and mental health, and that of the breeding stock who are producing the pups, than about the colour of its nose.

She asked for advice about the puppy, she did not ask for opinions about the cost or expect to be told that she should get a rescue.
