Maybe it's because SHE CAN'T BREATHE

This.

Have a google of brachycephalic dogs. Tragic. They were inbred specifically to suffer.

Survey99 · 21/10/2022 20:16

If you had done any research before buying a deformed dog you would have known this already. Most have very short distressed lives.

NameChange232 · 21/10/2022 20:17

How old is your girl and what is she like generally?
unfortunately they don’t live long and one study found their average life span to be 4.5 which really isn’t much at all.

They have so many issues which can easily be fatal which is why they don’t live long.. they are very susceptible to heat stroke for example as they can’t effectively pant.

This doesn’t mean she will drop dead in the next year if she’s currently 4/5. Has she had any surgery to try and improve her quality of life?

Wow I knew they were prone to health issues like a lot of inbreed 'pedigree' dogs but thats shocking.

Boxin · 21/10/2022 20:18

That’s generous by some research. Bloody horrific the ‘breeder’ is still breeding them. It’s all about the money not the poor dogs.

From the New Scientist: The researchers found that …French bulldogs had the lowest life expectancy – just 4.5 years.

The team found that the more a dog had been bred to suit human aesthetics, the lower its lifespan in general. “French bulldogs have flat faces and are very cute,” O’Neill says. “But this means they live for less time and struggle to blink and breathe for their entire lives.”

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/10/2022 20:19

It should be illegal. Utterly cruel and unnecessary.

TooHotTooColdJustRight · 21/10/2022 20:20

And in those 6 years most will need an operation to enable them to breathe.

Withnoshoes · 21/10/2022 20:20

And people pay ridiculous money to own them for such a short time and with all the health issues. So wrong.

Crazy isn't it. I worked in rescue and most people wouldn't take on a ten year old dog because they wanted to make sure they got plenty of years with a dog yet people actively choose a dog with a terrifyingly short life span.

ShouldntHaveBeenSoHasty · 21/10/2022 20:23

What always makes me sad about the whole thing is how many other dogs simply don’t recognise brachycephalic breeds as other dogs. A chihuahua and a deer hound recognise each other as dogs despite their huge differences but often have no idea what to do with brachycephalic breeds. They’ve been bred to such extremes they are aliens to their own species.

FistFullOfRegrets · 21/10/2022 20:24

Where did you find this breeder?

why didn't you do ANY research on the health/longevity of the dog?

just WHY really??

RunningFromInsanity · 21/10/2022 20:24

A lot of people not reading the OP properly and jumping to conclusions. The OP could have rescued/rehomed the dog.

I agree @MrsTerryPratchett
It sounds like OP already has the dog though so too late

Jessiesthedog · 21/10/2022 20:26

She breathes perfectly well thank you. I must’ve met I am very shocked I was told 10 years. Obviously there’s a lot of conflicting information online but the facts are she was going to be born whether I bought her or not so she’s come to my house and she lives a very good life.

What do you mean they were bred specifically to suffer?

MithrilCostsMore · 21/10/2022 20:27

I've rehomed a frenchie. She's already three. It's not a breed I would ever have chosen but that's really shocked me 😢

My lurcher always looks at me for reassurance when we meet French bulldogs but I don’t know if this is because he doesn’t recognise them as dogs or because every previous Frenchie we’ve met has been a poorly socialised or badly trained gobby nightmare 😂

Rosebuud · 21/10/2022 20:28

Sadly op it’s much less than that. Many can live longer but it’s about 4 years on average , these dogs can’t breathe and have terrible lives that their owners can comprehend and die early , it’s like living with the worst asthma . All because their squished noses look cute.

Jessiesthedog · 21/10/2022 20:28

I was extremely careful during the summer she had her own Dyson fan on her almost 24 seven during the heatwave so I certainly don’t think she’s in any pain or suffering or leading a life of misery she’s happily sleeping on my lap as we speak and absolutely adored by the whole family and the neighbours
