Supply and demand. If cruel and thoughtless people didn't buy them, they would be born.

For comparison my mongrel is 5 and fit as the day we got him. Can run and everything.

She breathes perfectly well thank you. I must’ve met I am very shocked I was told 10 years. Obviously there’s a lot of conflicting information online but the facts are she was going to be born whether I bought her or not so she’s come to my house and she lives a very good life.

If you got her from a rescue centre fair enough, but if you a
have paid market rate you are encouraging the breeding of an animal to suffer.

Anon778833 · 21/10/2022 20:29

Is there any need to be so nasty? The OP has the dog now so maybe it would be best to help her know how to make her life more comfortable. The dog can’t go back in time.

Dogs with faces like this are becoming increasingly fashionable and popular. So some people won’t even know about these things. Obviously it’s very sad that animals are being bred to suffer. I’d hate to have an animal that was unable to breathe. But a lot of people have no idea. I know A LOT of people who have French bulldogs who consider themselves dog lovers.

FindingMyself1999 · 21/10/2022 20:30

so sad. I’ve also read that other dogs are unsure around Frenchies.

tattlytote · 21/10/2022 20:30

Ignorance is not an excuse for paying into this cruel trade and practice. Anyone buying a dog should be fully informed of what they are buying into.

They're wrong. Unless they are like my friend who adopts them. She has 5.

MithrilCostsMore · 21/10/2022 20:30

Ours is a rescue. She breathes better than most but spent her first 18 months in a cage. I'm really sad to hear about the extremely short life expectancy. I'll spend the rest of her days looking after her though.

So you should not buy a pedigree at all then? As they all have their own health issues.

Should not be considered a typical dog article Vet Times

monsteramunch · 21/10/2022 20:31

She breathes perfectly well thank you.

OP, please read the links people are sharing.

Vets have campaigned for better awareness of the issues faced by this and other brachycephalic breeds for a reason.

They don't do it for a laugh, they do it because it's serious.

Poor dogs 😞

Cant you say 'I didn't realise this was an issue, I feel sad that it isn't more widely known' rather than dismissing what people have all explained to you - that the breed has severe issues.

The British Veterinary Association says: "Vets tell us that the majority of people who own brachycephalic dogs aren't able to recognise their pet's breed-related health issues."

Please listen to them as well as posters on here.

Otherwise why bother posting?

I’m sorry this is nonsense, spend any time round them and you hear them snuffling, it’s horrific, you can actually hear it. Their deformity makes them unable to function and you can hear it.

A Frenchie?

No, she doesn't.

They should but they don’t. A bit like people who vote without reading party manifestos.

AnApparitionQuipped · 21/10/2022 20:32

Just try to enjoy the time you have with her, OP. Take her for regular vet check ups, make sure any health issues are addressed, make sure she gets a good diet and the right amount of exercise. You can't change inherent health issues but you can maximise the health she has. Don't forget those stats will include people who don't look after their dog's health, people who breed from them willy-nilly - possibly an overrepresentation of such people as they are the most popular dogs in the UK at the moment and bought by some on a whim (not meaning you, OP).

Are you really calling people cunts when you bought this animal and increased the trade in them? And we are the cunts?

Exactly, you might think she's breathing well but no, as a breed, she definitely isn't. Why do you think their life spans are so short?

They’re not.

I’m already regretting posting I’m not sure what you think I can do is another poster said I can’t send her back in time, she was going to be born whether I took her or not. I just wanted confirmation as to what people thought might be the situation and if it is that she only has four years with me they will be the best for years any dog could hope for . As I say she breathes perfectly well she sat on my lap now breathing.

I was extremely careful during the summer she had her own Dyson fan on her almost 24 seven during the heatwave so I certainly don’t think she’s in any pain or suffering or leading a life of misery she’s happily sleeping on my lap as we speak and absolutely adored by the whole family and the neighbours

Fans don’t work on dogs. Fans work on humans because we sweat. For a dog it just moves around hot air.

Lifeisrelentless · 21/10/2022 20:34

Lots of not so nice comments on here. Op my Frenchie is 6 years old and still going strong and thinks/acts like he’s a puppy! I also know frenchies that have lived until 12-14 years so it isn’t always the case that they die young. Mine hasn’t had breathing issues but saying that has had a lot of other issues, and I wouldnt get a Frenchie again in future despite them being lovely dogs!

Don't panic OP my Frenchie is two and lives a fantastic happy life . I've never known of Frenchies passing at 4.5 that's alarmist , my dog breathes fine although I'm very careful with him in summer .

I know one who is 11 but their nose is not as squashed as some.

ToadSmall · 21/10/2022 20:35
