She breathes perfectly well thank you.

OP if you honestly say she doesn't snuffle rather than breathe clearly, then she isn't a frenchie.

That's what they do. Poor dogs 😞

It's ok to say you didn't realise how uncomfortable they are breathing wise / how common issues are within the breed / how serious the issues around unethical breathing are etc... but it's strange to say she breathes perfectly well because if she is snuffly she isn't a frenchie. They all are.

I love dogs and feel sad some are uncomfortable from day one.

It's ok if you didn't realise that this was the case. Not ok to dismiss people informing you of it now.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/10/2022 20:36

so if you could try not to be a cunt, that would be marvellous.

I think direct words on line are less cunty than encouraging a really horrifying piece of animal cruelty.

Tell everyone who pets her not to get one. Be the change and all that.

HeadacheEarthquake · 21/10/2022 20:36

I hope once your dog does pass you'll consider a rescue

This.

Breeding these poor dogs is beyond cruel. Why on earth people buy them and encourage it further is beyond me. It needs to be banned

Anniefrenchfry · 21/10/2022 20:37

Op if people stopped buying these dogs breeders would stop breeding them. Dogs aren’t toys, they aren’t there to be bred to have their faces panned in and can hardly breathe and seldom make it past five so folks can say oh cute. The cruelty is horrendous. People need to stop buying into this cruel trade to stop breeders breeding these poor deformed animals.

monsteramunch · 21/10/2022 20:39

I’m already regretting posting I’m not sure what you think I can do is another poster said I can’t send her back in time, she was going to be born whether I took her or not.

But less would be bred if fewer people bought them. Supply and demand.

By buying a breed (it sounds like unknowingly in your case) that has serious health issues, you've (again, unknowingly), contributed to more dogs with uncomfortable lives existing.

I'm not attaching a moral judgement to that, if you genuinely didn't know about those health issues, but you're being dismissive of people who have flagged them and said they are being cunts for doing so.

I honestly don't believe your dog breathes clearly and comfortably if she is a frenchie. Without snuffling. They can't.

Anniefrenchfry · 21/10/2022 20:39

hattie43 · 21/10/2022 20:35

Don't panic OP my Frenchie is two and lives a fantastic happy life . I've never known of Frenchies passing at 4.5 that's alarmist , my dog breathes fine although I'm very careful with him in summer .

No French bulldog breathes fine and if they did you would not be having to be carful with them in summer. All French bull dogs snuffle as they are deformed and can’t breathe properly.

Anon778833 · 21/10/2022 20:40

The people who are concerned about the ethics of buying a dog like this. Maybe someone will take on board what you say and make a more ethical choice next time if you are respectful instead of being nasty. Of course the OP is going to get defensive to some of the comments on here. If you get someone’s back up, they won’t listen.

hattie43 · 21/10/2022 20:40

All your folks and your vitriol have missed the boat . Dog fest this year probably a third of all dogs were frenchies followed by sausage dogs and Italian whippets .

Thesearmsofmine · 21/10/2022 20:40

Why on earth wouldn’t you research the breed before buying? People research most big purchases they make but don’t bother when it comes to a living creature.

outtheshowernow · 21/10/2022 20:40

Jessiesthedog · 21/10/2022 20:26

She breathes perfectly well thank you. I must’ve met I am very shocked I was told 10 years. Obviously there’s a lot of conflicting information online but the facts are she was going to be born whether I bought her or not so she’s come to my house and she lives a very good life.

The point is the more people that buy them the more it encourages breeding of these dogs. If people stopped buying them they would stop being bred as there would be no money in it

Windbeneathmybingowings · 21/10/2022 20:41

I think being sad about how long she’ll live is a bit like crying over spilled milk. The horse has bolted. You made the wine, now drink a cup.

it is widely known and you bought in to a horrible puppy farm industry. Enjoy her while you can and don’t buy a deformed dog again and then feel sorry for yourself about it.

hattie43 · 21/10/2022 20:41

@Anniefrenchfry

You're wrong he doesn't snuffle he doesn't even snore .

DeeofDenmark · 21/10/2022 20:41

You keep saying she would’ve been born whether you bought her or not but if the breeder wasn’t able to sell her they would’ve thought twice about continuing to breed.
I understand you now own her and plan to care for her as best you can but you don’t seem to be taking any of the comments on board. It is ok to hold your hands up and say you would act differently given your time again.

FindingMyself1999 · 21/10/2022 20:30

so sad. I’ve also read that other dogs are unsure around Frenchies.

My boy can't stand them. I have to put him on the lead if we see one, same with pugs.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 21/10/2022 20:42

That's so sad.
I know there are no guarantees but I don't know how you cope with losing a dog in that time. We have a Westie and are constantly stopped by people that had one as a child " and lived to be 16"

Branster · 21/10/2022 20:43

ShouldntHaveBeenSoHasty · 21/10/2022 20:23

What always makes me sad about the whole thing is how many other dogs simply don’t recognise brachycephalic breeds as other dogs. A chihuahua and a deer hound recognise each other as dogs despite their huge differences but often have no idea what to do with brachycephalic breeds. They’ve been bred to such extremes they are aliens to their own species.

I noticed this many, many, many times. Especially over the last 5 years or so as there are more around.
Absolutely it confuses a lot of dogs.

Muddledandbefuddled · 21/10/2022 20:43

You're understandably upset and people could be more gentle. But don't kid yourself that it's okay because she would have been born regardless. If people stopped buying them breeders would stop breeding them. By buying a puppy you encourage the breeding of the next litter.

MondayYogurt · 21/10/2022 20:43

I would have thought part of the appeal of buying these dogs is the short lifecycle, this enabling the purchasers a quick turnaround of instagram puppy likes, sickness gofundme likes, death pity likes, followed swiftly by new puppy likes.

Then he’s not a French bull dog. They all do. They can’t not.

You can't move for them where I live. All with docked tails.Sad

@ToadSmall Frenchies are born with the stumpy tail, it isn’t docked.

So the people go to ‘dogfest’ are the people who buy their dogs as a status symbol rather a dog, then? You do surprise me.

🙄
