She breathes perfectly well thank you

GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

Of course she does. Through that totally squashed nose. You keep telling yourself that.

I don't understand the trend for these dogs at all. I think they are ugly little things. Not cute at all. Give me a decent sized dog with a proper snout and the ability to run more than the length of a living room without falling over any day.

DeeofDenmark · 21/10/2022 20:47

Oh and don’t call honest mumsnetters ‘cunts’, people on here call it as they see it, no huns and sentiment here.

Then he’s not a French bull dog. They all do. They can’t not.

That's crap. My parents have two - one is 11 the other is 7 - and Neither snuffle nor snore. They do have normal length noses though. The original (for want of a better word) French bulldog nose is over an inch long, my parents deliberately sought out breeders where the parents had decent length noses.

There are breeders out there with morals, but unfortunately it is supply and demand as others have said.

outtheshowernow · 21/10/2022 20:49

Pugs also really struggle to breath
We know one who can barely walk and sounds like a pig when it breathes it's heartbreaking Stupid idiotic people think it's cute. It's just cruelty

SirSniffsAlot · 21/10/2022 20:56

Sadly, dogs are not just the only animal to suffer as a result of human obsesseion with form over function. We all need to guard strongly against brachycephalic forms of the animals we love. And keep look out for other possible forms of 'torture breeding' such as the elongated spine of (some) dachs.

In the case of dogs, sadly, that may mean giving up breeds with wonderful temperaments because humans have destroyed the breed by pushing for extremes of breeding.

@Jessiesthedog i have a brachycephalic breed too (who also has no issues breathing as checked by vet. Best friend also a vet so sees her frequently) I completely get where you coming from. We make sure we give our girl best life possible as know she’s won’t be around forever.

Anniefrenchfry · 21/10/2022 20:56

Look op you asked, lots of knowledgeable dog folks on here, if you went for a good breeder and your dog has a long snout then it may likely survive past six. If you were shallow and went for the insta short snout deformed variety then likely hood is the dog won’t make it past five. Based on your friends comment I’m guessing sadly the latter, I’d speak to your vet and ask their opinion, boas surgery can help these animals have a quality of life and also prolong it.

She breathes perfectly well thank you. I must’ve met I am very shocked I was told 10 years. Obviously there’s a lot of conflicting information online but the facts are she was going to be born whether I bought her or not so she’s come to my house and she lives a very good life.

Has it ever occurred to you that it’s people who buy unhealthy, brachycephalic dogs who create the demand for more of the ghastly deformed things to be bred by unscrupulous breeders?

They only live six years, so we can sell them another one. Good business… 🙄

That horse can't be real?? Wtf!

Babyroobs · 21/10/2022 20:59

The only way this cruelty will stop is if people stop buying them. Why on earth would you pay extortionate amounts for a dog which will only live a few years and will likely be very expensive to insure?

makemeamum · 21/10/2022 20:59

My frenchies can breathe. They've been bred to have a pointer snout and round nostrils.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/10/2022 20:59

If people like you who claim to be dog lovers didn’t keep buying them, then there would be no market for them. So the “it would’ve been born anyway” argument doesn’t wash. The breeders breed these dogs for money, not love. And by buying one you have perpetuated the whole cruel cycle.

Sunnidaze · 21/10/2022 21:02

My sister rescued a Frenchie, she lived for 13 years.

BirmaBrite · 21/10/2022 21:02

What does your Vet say ? they will have seen your dog and assessed how severe its breathing difficulties are, they can offer surgery to help if needed.

This is the problem. OP says "she was going to be born whether I bought her or not" - failing to realise that the fact that people continue to buy these dogs means people will continue to breed them.

Of course your dog would still have been born whether you bought her or not. But if all the Frenchies went unsold, breeders would stop breeding more. By buying her, you've helped to ensure the continuation of this cruel practice.

I'm glad your dog is well at the moment and leading a happy life. Long may this continue but next time, please, please don't buy another Frenchie.

Yes you are right, I've just googled.
I've never seen anything like that. It looks like something out of a cartoon! Freaky!

HollyJollypup · 21/10/2022 21:04

It’s a Frenchie.

Of course it CANT breath perfectly well!

Manekinek0 · 21/10/2022 21:05

I think it depends on how inbred they are. PewDiePie has a 16 year old pug and one of the oldest dogs in the world was a pug.

Sally090807 · 21/10/2022 21:07

Their lifespan is 10-12 years. There are some really nasty posters on here, my little frenchie has absolutely no breathing problems and is the loveliest little dog.
He can be quite stubborn but otherwise is an absolute joy to have.

Survey99 · 21/10/2022 21:07

The ongoing excessive breeding of these dogs is horrific Kennel Club 10 year Breed stats. This doesn't include those not registered or the ones that die during c-sections or shortly after birth because the mothers are so deformed they cannot birth themselves.

If the 54,000 buyers this year didn't have ops attitude there would be 10s of thousands less dogs suffering a such a cruel short pain filled life. Breeders will only stop breeding when demand drops. @Jessiesthedog you are directly part of the problem and ignorance is no defence for animal cruelty.
