The foghorn is sounding frequently and I suspect that's why I'm up enjoying the ambience of a foggy garden at 4am.

Hoping @BaconandAvocado is fast asleep and all the others with wide awake pups.

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse - Ada's about 23 weeks now. We're only expecting her to be around 25/26 kg full grown based on her mum and she's right on track for that.

RiskyCookie · 17/10/2021 20:13

@Aria20 only 5 days!

Aria20 · 17/10/2021 20:16

@RiskyCookie ahh early days then. How is she getting on with the older dog?

StopGo · 17/10/2021 22:14

@RiskyCookie she's so sweet, butter wouldn't melt :)

RiskyCookie · 17/10/2021 22:49

@Aria20 not too bad, older dog not really enthusiastic about her presence. 🙈 She's growled at her a couple of times to correct her but nothing major.

Older ddog has tried to hump pup though?! Which I didn't expect.

Someone said its a dominance thing but in another breath I read an article that said that's rubbish.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 18/10/2021 06:44

I think humping is often excitement or anxiety.

Pup woke at 5.50am then wouldn't settle and whimpered which is not like him at all. DD starts her shift early so I knew she'd be up and wake him so I just got up. He stayed in crate but eventually came out and his eyelids are swollen and red. Like golf balls so he can barely see 😓 no gloop. Warm compresses, no walk and tlc on the sofa until the vet opens.

@makemecleanthehouse That looks so sore, poor pup.

Getting TerrorPup to behave reasonably around other dogs is getting to be really frustrating. I don't want to be THAT owner ("she's friendly"). She just gets incredibly excited, plants herself and then launches which very understandably dogs don't like unless they are also very confident. She's basically incredibly impolite! We don't and never have let her greet every dog, if she plants we try our hardest to not let her say hello at all. Some days we make excellent progress, others it's like her head isn't screwed on. And of course if other dogs are off lead and just approach everything goes out of the window.

I also hate actively trying to keep her attention and then hearing other owners comment about my "not nice" dog - e.g saying to their dog /partner/children "stay clear, clearly not a friendly dog".

cheeseisthebest · 18/10/2021 07:18

Oh poor boy.
We keep having pooing in the house, on the sofas? 2 different ones? So gross.
He's also just been quite sick. Not sure if I should worry?

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 18/10/2021 07:44

I've just googled and lots of advice to give OTC allergy meds like Piriton...so I have. Carefully checked medication, dose and good websites for advice but feeling anxious.

Is the pooing new and with the vomiting or just puppy lovely behaviour. (People need to read this thread to make decision on getting a puppy)

@TerrierOrTerror do you know anyone with dogs who'd agree to do some structured training with? Let them walk near but not too close and you get your pups attention with treats. Basically they walk nearer and nearer but never closer if yours is not engaged with you. You keep feeding high value treats to gain attention and repeat, repeat over several days, several places and preferably different dogs until he's used to looking at you when he sees another dog

OP posts:
MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 18/10/2021 07:47

I have treats always ready (I think I smell of fish nowadays) and on sight of other dogs he got a treat and got used to walking past. Labs are however people obsessed whereas terriers are anything furry

I can't master loose lead walking. Sometimes great, often not and you'll see me stop, start, stop, start, waving primula madly and muttering under my breath "heel you bastard"

567and · 18/10/2021 07:52

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse poor little pup. That looks sore. Do you think an allergy or something?

I think we need to get pup’s anal glands expressed 🤢 Caught him bum scooting across the grass this morning. Will monitor for today and see if it was a one off but I think I’ll let DH take him in for that! 😆

GuyFawkesDay · 18/10/2021 08:00

Oh @MakeMeCleanTheHouse that looks so sore! Poor pup!! Hope the piriton helps. Chamomile tea might be soothing too if you have any in? Make some up, let it cool and use to wipe. I use it on my eyes in summer with bastard hayfever.

Heel is patchy for me too. If he's a bit but not too hungry he's awesome. If it's early morning and he's ravenous, or there's distractions, forget it!

cheeseisthebest · 18/10/2021 08:06

We have had the odd inside including on the sofa and the odd vomit.
I don't know.
He seems really quiet.
Nights are awful again, when he wakes he just won't settle back to sleep. Woke me up quarter to 4 this morning and was manic! So excited! Eventually went back to sleep and now he's exhausted. He just constantly wakes up when he hears anything? That's normal isn't it but I worry he's exhausted.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 18/10/2021 08:30

Remind me what breed is he @cheeseisthebest He's definitely been challenging with sleep and poo on both sofas would make me 😭

@TerrierOrTerror mine is very similar with other dogs - frustrated greeter!! I also never let her greet every dog but she always wants to! Sometimes I can get her attention back on me but more often than not she just stops, sits or lays down and stares at the other dog... then when they get closer she's gets so excited she's jumping up on her back legs clapping to try and get to say hello! She's now firmly back on the long line unless no one is around as if she spots another dog the other end of the field she legs it and won't recall - ok if it's a dog we know but not ok if it's a strange dog or on lead etc as I also don't want to be THAT owner. It's something I need to really work on but I find it so hard as other owners are like oh it's ok she just wants to play etc.

cheeseisthebest · 18/10/2021 09:52

He's shih tzu.
He's so clingy and I'm worried he has separation anxiety.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 18/10/2021 11:00

I still haven't left my pup mainly because of the idle chewing which this week seems better.
£65 of vetininary advice later and we have steroid eye drops and Piriton 3 times a day. I'm so glad I started it early. The funny thing is the eye drops are exactly the same ones DH uses for an inflammatory eye condition he has

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse poor pup any ideas what's caused the flare up?

Cait73 · 18/10/2021 11:40

@Goawayangryman very few puppy training classes include puppy playtime they just end up a free for all absolutely nothing to be achieved by this, meet up with the other students outside class that's what we did

@cheeseisthebest my 16 week old shihtzu sounds just like yours BUT I've gotten firm; I put up stair gates to divide up the home (I didn't realise it but she was overwhelmed having run of the whole house) I've re crate trained her and I can leave her now. Yes she makes a bit of a fuss but I left an old phone on her crate and it didn't even last 2 minutes before she curled up and went to sleep

I love my puppy dearly but I'm not letting her run the show, any more!!

cheeseisthebest · 18/10/2021 11:45

Oh Cait73 I didn't realise you had a shih tzu too!
What do you mean an old phone? Did you call it so you could hear her?
My boy is 21 weeks nearly and quite big. He has also slept in his crate all morning!

Cait73 · 18/10/2021 12:41

@cheeseisthebest I just left the phone on "video" when I went out checked it when I got back lol this is Peggy
