Omg I never start ongoing threads like this!
Back to school for my lot tomorrow. Taken pup for an evening walk tonight, desperately trying to tire him out! He's struggled to nap today as felt too hot.

Aah thanks he's a Staffy. At the moment he's doing very well considering he's only 9 weeks. I can't wait for jabs though so I can get him out for a walk. I actually didn't mean to post that pic I meant to post one where he's not trying to eat my phone!!

Happy half birthday to Billy!

We had a really great weekend with TerrorPup. Saw lots of family including those she hadn't met before, some with a litter of kittens, and her in houses she's not been in before. She settled super well at my in-laws whilst we ate lunch in their formal dining room. She also stayed at my parents whilst we had a night away and it went really well - she had a failed overnight with her daycare person a few weeks ago so relieved there is someone she'll settle with overnight, not exactly a feasible option for short breaks (6 hour round trip) but it proves she can do it. As some know we're working with a behaviourist on major FOMO and escalating separation anxiety so good progress!

Then we went on a country walk and I dropped the long line for some of it and she was perfect. She's only ever been off lead once and all other times on a long line held as her recall is non existent, so this was huge for us. Recall has been so, so difficult as (1) no fear stage as a puppy so she just went off even on her first walks and (2) since then I've taught loose lead TOO well and she sticks so close without distractions it's impossible to practice, then once there is a distraction it's too late. Our walk was perfect as we could see in all directions so I knew no distractions - she pretty much stuck to my heel but it was nice to walk along not holding her. If only she wasn't so focussed on other dogs walking would be a complete dream.

She's not been perfect my all means, she was definitely over tired by our last family visit today and played up...

Also such a difference being out of London. Only saw one other dog owner but as soon as they clocked the long line they popped their dog on a lead. It makes such a difference for our dog not to have an off lead dog bounding up so much appreciated.

@GuyFawkesDay I was laughing at your pic. I have a very similar photo from last Boxing Day when it absolutely poured (hopefully it's attached). Recently we were out walking and I heard a woman say 'oh there must be a pond up here' because my pup was absolutely soaked. Nope, she'd just run through long grass! They're just mud/water magnets.

Oh gosh they're so alike!!!!

I mean I wanted a spaniel because they're just no nonsense, fun, happy dogs so I knew what I was letting myself in for but yeah, I'm gonna need a drying coat and an equafleece for him!!! Better put it on his Santa list!!

That and a biothane long line cos man, the webbing ones are disgusting when wet.

tizwozliz · 19/09/2021 21:54

Well, we made it to Devon, good journey, pup was great in the car as always - one stop for a snack and a wee. Met some sheep, they weren't timid at all and pup managed to lick one through the fence but was disappointed they weren't ready to play. Spent quite some time observing the chickens. Then hugely overtired, lots of whinging and barking and trying to chew on us before she finally gave in to sleep. Now snoozing in front of the tv.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 20/09/2021 08:03

@tizwozliz also on my hols and in Devon! (South)

Lovely weather and I'm just pondering moors or beach

tizwozliz · 20/09/2021 08:12

We're staying around Tiverton as visiting people in Torquay area and in Minehead too. Pup slept great, I slept terribly!

Let me know if you find any excellent spots.

BaconAndAvocado · 20/09/2021 09:27

Enjoy your holidays with your pups tizwozliz and MakeMeCleanTheHouse*

We’ve decided that Newboy will have a week at my parents when we go to the New Forest in October. He’ll only be 15 weeks so won’t be able to walk for very long. I just hope his sleep pattern is better by then......

Jinnybean · 20/09/2021 10:02

I feel like I’m failing Jinny abit. She’s had a few wee accidents inside and has only really learnt to sit. The other owners from the litter and bragging how they have learnt down, paw, stay etc.

😩

Spudlet · 20/09/2021 10:15

Spudpup and I have just had a lovely autumn walk in the woods - I love this time of year. I was a bit miffed though as an off lead spaniel just bounced on his head while he was on the lead - he’s a keen greeter at the moment so I’m popping him back on the lead when I see another dog. Fortunately he didn’t seem too phased by it, but it is a bit annoying when that happens! Mind you,
I’m sure we’ll have the reverse situation happen at some point though.

We did have a small crisis when we ran out of biscuits Confused but happily Spudpup didn’t know, so I got him back on the lead and did some loose lead (lololol, he was not at home for that today) walking on the way back to the car. I do think he felt a bit cheated by the lack of yumyums - must get another tube of primula!

Aria20 · 20/09/2021 11:06

Have nice holidays @tizwozliz @MakeMeCleanTheHouse

Grr think we're def hitting teenage stage! Pup has been barking loads all weekend - there is nothing wrong with her at all but she's enjoying attention barking, also back to jumping on sofa and not recalling in the field even with no other dogs around this morning!

Don't worry too much about what the others are saying... They won't be telling you the whole story.

I got very frustrated last week as my dog is still very bitey. All the blog and advice I've read all have similar advice, which doesn't work on our pup and I was getting to my wits end. But on the other hand he is very good at working through the night and no accidents... So it's settings and roundabouts really. Your pup will have mastered some bits they haven't and the other way around.

Returnoftheowl · 20/09/2021 11:45

That should say sleeping through the night!

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 20/09/2021 11:52

@JinnybeanAsk me one day and I'll say how good he is. Ask me next day and I wonder why I ever thought it was a good idea to get a puppy.

I lost my old dog in June and vowed to never have another (we already have DH's dog) but then I did. I'm not in love with Goof as much as I was with my old dog. He's hard work and I just don't feel the same bond. Think I got him too soon

Just spoken to a friend who's 8 week old pup sounds much easier than Goof already which made me feel like a failure.

Lifeishitsometimes · 20/09/2021 12:39

@Jinnybean my dog did brilliantly with housetraining and learning sit, stay, leave it, down, etc within a week. Week later, she's really woken up and is tearing round the house ignoring our commands and chewing us all to death. So, just because they start well, doesn't mean they will be obedient (!). The world is just so interesting!

BaconAndAvocado · 20/09/2021 12:40

Jinnybean I completely second what Returnoftheowl says.

Newboy (age 11 weeks) never poos inside, weeks are 80% outside and he can do sit, sometimes stay and sometimes responds to his name.

He wakes every 2.5 hours during the night and I sleep downstairs with him.

Keep reminding yourself of the positives, the other bits will eventually (please God 🤣) come together.

StopGo · 20/09/2021 14:15

May we join you all? This is Penpup a 3 month old Cocker girl. She's brown and white

@StopGo She's lovely

Aria20 · 20/09/2021 14:42

Argh I've shrunk the crate mat and it's gone all bumpy and mis shapen by washing it on a hot wash Sad pets at home are out of stock of this particular one now too. Bloody typical.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 20/09/2021 15:47

@StopGo beautiful pup

@Aria20 our pup sleeps on an old pillow which all our dogs have done

opalescent · 20/09/2021 17:11

@StopGo welcome, she is lovely! This is my 14 week WCS pup ❤️
