Omg I never start ongoing threads like this!
Back to school for my lot tomorrow. Taken pup for an evening walk tonight, desperately trying to tire him out! He's struggled to nap today as felt too hot.

I tried crying it out didn't work, he just barked. I can see both sides.

I can't imagine how it feels to still be so short on sleep. I also can't imagine listening to pup crying or whining so you have my sympathy on both fronts. I think all dogs are different and you need to know how sensitive your dog is before risking any distress. (But.... I follow a positive training plan and fail completely on the word No. I may also have yelled it at him in the car several times as he tried to eat the leather headrest and break through the dog guard whilst I was driving 😳 )

Going back to cars...we have a hammock in a small car and an estate car with a dog guard. Seat belt attachment which he has chewed through... only £6 at local petshop fortunately.

I sort of feel that these puppies have been bred and born at our request and its our choice to have them so have to suck it up really!
Good luck bacon really hope you get a good night's sleep, sleep deprivation is so awful.

But @cheeseisthebest that's surely also true of our human children? Doesn't mean you have to suck up everything they dish out.

cheeseisthebest · 25/09/2021 20:25

That is very true! But I had the same attitude with my babies, never left them to cry as they hadn't asked to be born! My son didn't sleep through until he was 18 months old!

But I did try it with my pup out of desperation and if it works, brilliant!

Im in no position to offer advice. One of my kids didn't sleep through until he was 4. Years. Not months. The other woke up every 45 minutes till she was 5 months old. I know nothing :) but I wish you the very best of luck with the pup.

GuyFawkesDay · 25/09/2021 21:06

I think you get what you get as well. I have one lark who was never a great sleeper. And the youngest could sleep for Britain and I did nothing different. They're just different kids and you get the same with puppies.

I know spaniels are very owner focussed so it doesn't surprise me that mine is mummy's boy. I'm definitely his person and he just wants to be near me.

Yep. Can't go to the loo alone. He's always there, even if it's the other side of the room where I am.

Is it really bad I would be so happy if he slept on the bed with me?!!

BaconAndAvocado · 25/09/2021 21:59

Well it ain't looking good for tonight.....DH has been on Pupwatch whilst I watched Strictly in the other room and I've just come in to find Newboy fast asleep on the sofa.........

Don't think he's going to go down at 11 🤔

It's not bad at all. If I lived alone or was single my dog would be in bed with me!

Our terrier sleeps with us. I like it sometimes but am sure I'd sleep better without. She wriggles, occupies the middle of the bed and pinches the duvet.

The lab pup is not coming in the bedroom!

@BaconAndAvocado I find a sleepy evening sometimes leads to good nights sleep

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 25/09/2021 22:13

Do we need a new thread soon?

GuyFawkesDay · 25/09/2021 22:14

Oooh we do!!!
@MakeMeCleanTheHouse I agree. Sometimes sleep begets sleep.

BaconAndAvocado · 25/09/2021 22:14

The Lab pup is not coming the bedroom 😂

When our Newboy Lab is fully grown there's no way he'd fit in our double bed!

BaconAndAvocado · 25/09/2021 22:15

GuyFawkesDay I do hope that sleep begets sleep.......!

GuyFawkesDay · 25/09/2021 22:22

@BaconAndAvocado I hope it does for you!
I'm starting to see it really is true that a tired dog is a happy dog

MrsHerculePoirot · 25/09/2021 22:35

@BaconAndAvocado that was when we just put covers on our sofa and let him sleep there overnight. That’s when we moved upstairs again and slept through the night. I think he just liked moving about - he wasn’t waking to go to toilet after last wee by then either and we just set alarm to come down before he woke up and had baby monitor on. Could you do that instead maybe instead of having to decide whether to let him cry it out a bit?

BaconAndAvocado · 25/09/2021 22:43

MrsHerculePoirot
We're going to use a baby monitor and when he wakes we'll come down and let him out for a wee.

I guess I'm prepared to let him whimper (not cry) for a little bit if he just wants company.
Although how I'll know the difference until the be taken him into the garden anyway I don't know!

Just to make it clear, I am a complete newbie and I really don't know what I'm doing!!
Which is why in addicted to this thread!
